1 Catering for a Milk & Egg Free Diet The information on this leaflet is not exhaustive and parents/guardians and the young person should always be consulted as they will know the condition best. If in doubt, leave it out. Checking Food Labels If the food contains ANY of the following ingredients, you should avoid it. Milk Buttermilk Lactose Modified milk Cheese Hydrolysed whey sugar Non fat milk solids Yoghurt Hydrolysed whey protein Skimmed milk powder Ghee Hydrolysed Casein Cream Margarine Casein (curds) Butter Whey, whey solids Caseinate EGG Egg Egg albumin Egg protein Dried Egg Whole egg Egg lecithin Egg yolk Egg white E322: Lecithin. This may be present in manufactured foods and most often from soya rather than egg. If the source of E322 is not specified, avoid it. When going abroad, be aware that different names can be used in the ingredients list for milk, milk products, egg and egg products. Names to look out for abroad include: Whey syrup sweetener EGG Livetin Vitellin Frozen egg Globulin Ovoglobulin Ovovitellin Pasteurised Egg Ovalbumen Ovomucin Egg powder Milk Substitutes Soya Milk Rice or Oat Milk Some people with cow s milk allergy react to Sheep or goat s milk too so make sure you check with the young person or their parents/guardians.
2 Food to choose and Foods to avoid The following gives a general rule to milk and egg containing and milk and egg free foods but ALWAYS check the label every time. Dairy products Soya milk e.g. Alpro, supermarket brand soya milks Rice or oat milk e.g. Plamil /Rice dream, Provamel Rice Soya milkshakes e.g. Yo, Boots own brand Cream substitute e.g. Soya Dream CHEESE Soya based/ non-dairy cheese Non dairy soft cheese style spread YOGHURTS Soya yoghurts and non-dairy desserts Fresh, evaporated, condensed, sterilised, long life UHT and dried milk powder Milkshakes including milk based smoothies Cream and synthetic cream toppings CHEESE Cheese, cheese spread, cheese slices, cheese strings, cottage cheese, vegetarian cheese, cream cheese Quark Pizza with cheese toppings YOGHURTS Natural and fruit yoghurts, Greek yoghurt, crème fraiche, fromage frais Yoghurt drinks, including smoothies made with yoghurt Bread, other cereals and potatoes CEREALS Custard powder, rice, semolina, sago, tapioca made with milk substitute Barley, oats, bran, wheatgerm, couscous Breakfast cereals check label e.g. Ready Brek, porridge, Weetabix, Honey Loops, Frosties, Rice Krispies, Sugar Puffs, Popcorn BREAD Wholemeal, granary, white, wheatgerm breads/rolls, malt loaf, Wraps, bagels, pitta breads, ciabatta, poppadums, chappati Plain pizza bases PASTA Plain dried pasta not containing egg Fresh pasta not containing egg Plain wheat noodles CEREALS Canned and instant milk puddings Muesli, Cereal bars Cereals containing milk and chocolate e.g. Special K, Coco Pops Toffee popcorn BREAD Brioche, pancakes, naan bread, croissants French toast/eggy bread, Yorkshire pudding PASTA Fresh and dried pasta containing egg Fresh and dried filled pasta Pasta dishes containing milk, cream, cheese or egg, e.g. macaroni cheese, lasagne,
