World Health Organization United States Cuba Adult Mortality Rate Age-standardized mortality rate for cancer Age-standardized mortality rate for cardiovascular diseases Deaths due to HIV/AIDS (per 100,000) 5 <10 Healthy life expectancy at birth Life expectancy at birth Maternal mortality ratio (per 100,000 live births) Newborns with low birth weight (%) 8 6 Dentistry personnel density 16 9 Page 2
World Health Organization, cont d General government expenditure on health as % of total government expenditure United States Cuba Physicians density Total expenditure on health as a % of gross domestic product Page 3
Cuba s Healthcare at a Glance National health system No private hospitals or clinics are permitted Growing healthcare black market, also known as sociolismo Large emphasis on preventative treatment Physician s wages are kept low Use of government generic drugs Annual house visits by doctors Page 4
Doctors One doctor is provided for every 170 residents Doctor s pay is about $15 per month, many can make more being taxi drivers or taking other jobs in the tourism industry Many are exported by Cuba to help other nations during natural disasters or financial instability Page 5
Health Tourism Attracts 20,000 people a year and increases revenue by $40 million Patients come from around the world for various treatments Cuba has also been successfully exporting vaccines for the past couple of years Page 6
Alternative Healthcare Due to economic constraints, Cuba has started to experiment with herbal and alternative medicine Acupuncture, yoga and magnetic devices have been used to help treat patients Page 7
Facilities Most of the infrastructure is old Doctors do not have access to the newest equipment Essential drugs are sometimes hard to acquire Page 8
Patients Doctors are in charge of certain blocks and neighborhoods Annual visits are made at patient s houses to make sure living conditions are acceptable Senior citizens do not receive proper care in many cases Page 9
Patient s Lifestyle The patient s lifestyle may have a dramatic impact on the overall health of the nation The Cuban population does not have as much access to video games, television cell phones and cars as the American population. This leads to a more active and healthy lifestyle in Cuba. Cubans also rely more heavily on fresh foods grown nearby, whereas fast food and junk food are favorites in America Page 10
Controversy Most of the facts/data on Cuban healthcare were provided by Cuba, not the World Health Organizations or other agencies Some people believe only health tourist receive the top quality healthcare in Cuba, while most of the citizens are left with the old facilities Page 11
