1 pi beta phi values auction FRATERNITY VALUE: LIFELONG COMMITMENT SUGGESTED FACILITATOR: VICE PRESIDENT OF MEMBERSHIP Goal: To allow participants to articulate which core values mean the most to them and why. Room setup/materials needed: Make sure you have enough room for participants to sit comfortably in a large group as well as space for small groups. Make copies of the Values Auction handout for each member. After printing these, count them and make stacks of five and place the same number in the bottom right-hand corner of each stack of pages. For instance there should be five sheets with a number 1, the next five sheets with a number 2, etc. continuing until you have enough copies labeled for each participant. Mix them up and place one sheet under each chair. These numbers will be used to define where group participants will be placed. An auction paddle should be made for each group with their group s number on the front. Example: If there are going to be 10 groups, there should be 10 auction paddles, each with a different group number. Place the paddles under the chairs with the corresponding handout numbers. For instance, place the 1 paddle under one of the chairs that has a handout with a number 1 on it and so on until at least one chair from every group has a paddle under it. These can be pieces of cardstock with numbers written on them. They can be printed and affixed to popsicle sticks or any other creative way you d like to implement. These will be additional supplies/materials you might need. Copies of the Pi Phi money should be made (found at the end of this seminar). Each group should get an envelope of 50 $100 bills along with their auction paddle. All Pi Phi money copied and used during this seminar should be destroyed (shredded) upon conclusion of the seminar. You many also want a gavel or any other auctioneer type gimmicks. Have a pen or pencil for each participant Flip chart paper and marker A flip chart page listing all six of the core values: o Integrity o Lifelong Commitment o Honor and Respect o Personal and Intellectual Growth o Philanthropic Service to Others o Sincere Friendship Getting Started Talking points are indicated with a callout bullet ( ). Please use these as speaking guidelines, but be sure to jazz up the presentation with your own personality. Facilitation instructions are indicated with an arrow ( ) and serve as hints you might find helpful when administering the material. Most importantly, have fun!

2 Instructions Introduce the activity: ( Something has gone horribly wrong, and you ve all just lost all of your Pi Beta Phi core values and you must PAY to get them back. These precious commodities will be auctioned here tonight! ( The object of this activity will be to bid on and win as many of Pi Beta Phi s core values as possible for your team. Many of your fellow Pi Phis who have also lost their values will also be competing to buy them back. You will have $5,000 to spend. The challenge will be how you choose to allocate your money in an effort to win as many Pi Phi values as you can. ( Before we divide into teams, I want to give you a few minutes on your own to decide how you would personally allocate your $5,000 in trying to win back your values. Using the list of core values written on the flip chart paper and the Values Auction handout beneath your chair, record your thoughts about the following questions. Which Pi Phi values mean the most to you? What would you be willing to pay to keep those values? ( Take a couple of minutes to write down your reactions. Give participants five minutes to jot down their thoughts and then continue. ( Before we break into groups, I am going to give you the rest of the instructions. You have been preassigned a team. Your team number can be found at the bottom of your Values Auction handout page and the captain for each team is the person with the team bidding paddle and envelope of Pi Phi money under their chairs. Each team must come to an agreement on how to allocate the $5,000 in an effort to outbid all the other teams in winning their values. ( Captains, when I finish giving instructions, please hold your paddles up and gather your team in different parts of the room. You will have five minutes to deliberate on how best to spend your money. By the way, you will be bidding in increments of $100 and the bidding will start at $100. At the end of five minutes, we ll join back together and the auction will begin. One person on the team will be in charge of bidding for the team and will control the paddle so be sure she clearly understands the team s expectation on the allocation of dollars. Captains, find your paddles and break into teams. Allow participants to find their groups and give them about five minutes to discuss a strategy for how they will want to allocate their funds. Someone will need to account for dollars spent by each team by calculating expenditures on the flip chart. Auction the items in the order they are listed. Once you are ready to begin the activity, take advantage of the opportunity to be the live auctioneer you ve always wanted to be. Use your best negotiation skills to really advertise for each core value and the worth each one has trying to get each one to sell for as much as possible. Start the bidding for each core value at $100 by saying something like: ( Tonight s bidding for Integrity will begin at $100. Do I hear $100 anybody?

3 When you see a bidder bid for a value at that amount, point them out and call on them saying something like: ( I see $100 for group. Do I hear $200? Anybody, somebody, $200? Continue until no other bidders are making offers and then give them the final: ( Going once, going twice, sold for $ to group. Continue with the next value, Lifelong Commitment until all values have been sold. When it gets closer to the end and teams are willing to spend as much as possible, it might be interesting to allow them to pool their money with other groups. Try not to suggest this to them but see if they come up with this idea on their own and allow them to do so. Discussion Questions Final Wrap-Up After all values have been sold, have participants return to their original seats. Continue by asking participants the following questions and calling on participants to answer accordingly. ( What did you learn about the other members of the group by engaging in this activity? ( What changed about your priorities when you realized that you could only have a few? ( How did you negotiate your values as a group? Were you happy with the results? ( Were there certain values that you fought harder for than others? Why? ( Which of Pi Phi s core values have most affected your collegiate experience? Why? After the discussion questions, close the seminar. ( It is essential to remember how important our core values are to us as Pi Phis. They bind us to each other and to our Pi Beta Phi sisters across the world. While it may be hard to imagine actually ever losing these values, it is equally as hard to imagine a Pi Beta Phi experience without these values at our core. As you did with your group members, it is vital to be able to articulate the significance and worth of the core values of Pi Beta Phi to our fellow members as well as those who are non-members and even potential members of Pi Beta Phi. Thank everyone for coming. All Pi Phi money copied and used during this seminar should be destroyed (shredded) upon conclusion of the seminar. Evaluation: Don t forget to help the Fraternity assess this program. The program facilitator, as well as a member of each class, should be asked to visit the Leading with Values website, to fill out a quick survey. Remember, the name of this seminar is Pi Beta Phi Values Auction. The chapter s Vice President of Member Development should remember to record the presentation of this program in the chapter s monthly regional report.

4 Pi Beta Phi Values Auction Integrity Lifelong Commitment Honor and Respect Personal and Intellectual Growth Philanthropic Service to Others Sincere Friendship Which Pi Phi values mean the most to you? What would you be willing to pay to keep those values? Group Number:
