3 Career Prospects When you have successfully completed your studies you will receive a certificate of achievement in level 3 counselling skills from Focus Awards. I always wanted to do my best to help them, and tried to be as supportive as I could by being there as someone they could talk to; they would often say that they felt better just because someone was there to listen. What qualifications do I need? There is currently no legal requirement in the UK to have any specific qualifications or experience in order to call yourself, and practice as a counsellor. However, clients will always want to see that you have relevant qualifications or experience in the area and that you are a member of a professional body. Once you have obtained membership with an awarding body, you will need to meet their rigorous requirements for CPD in order to maintain your registration. These are set out by the individual organisations. Where can I work? Counsellors are employed in a wide range of settings, including the voluntary sector, NHS, and employers such as local authorities who offer a counselling service to staff. Many counsellors also decide to set up their own private practice either to see clients face-to-face, or to offer or telephone counselling sessions to clients. How much can I earn? The amount you earn largely depends on the sector you decide to work in. The starting salary for many counsellors is around 19,000+ a year. Those in a

4 supervisory role can earn between 30,000-40,000 a year. For counsellors who work privately, the amount they earn is dependent on the number of clients they see many typically charge between 30 to 50 an hour.
