9 Potential future raw materials Microbial oil Algae oil Cooperation with over 20 research institutions around the world. 80% of Neste Oil s R&D costs (~EUR 42 million in 2011) directed to researching renewable raw materials and the refining technologies. The first ever pilot plant in Europe to produce waste-based microbial oil is being built at Neste Oil s Porvoo refinery in Finland. 9

10 Microbial oil Can be produced from agricultural and industrial waste (e.g. straw, forest harvesting residue) by using yeasts and molds. Microbes grow without sunlight, e.g, in conventional bioreactors similar to those used in the brewing and biotechnology industries. Microbes feed on organic material, such as sugars, and grow rapidly. Capable of storing large quantities of lipids in their cells, typically over 50% of their mass. Recognizing raw material potential of microbes was a Finnish innovation In 2010, Neste Oil applied for patents covering new technology for producing microbial oil from waste using yeasts and molds. Microbial oil has already been used to produce NExBTL renewable diesel in a laboratory setting. The first ever pilot plant in Europe to produce residue-based microbial oil is being built at Neste Oil s Porvoo refinery in Finland. Commercial production of NExBTL with microbial oil is possible at the earliest in

11 Microalgae oil There are tens of thousands of different algae species. Most species produce remarkable amounts of intracellular lipids. Microalgae grow wherever water and light is available, also in seawater and land areas unsuitable for cultivation. Oil production potential is may times higher than that of current oil plants. Microalgae is not yet grown at an industrial scale for biofuel production. Neste Oil is involved in two research projects in the Netherlands and Australia to build up experience on the suitability of different types of algae for use in an industrialscale production under a variety of conditions. 11
