1 LIST OF RESOURCES Prepared by the Farm Law Office Legal Aid of Nebraska, Bancroft, Nebraska The Nebraska Farm Hotline The Hotline can be a first stop for information on the resources and services available to farm and ranch families and rural residents throughout the state of Nebraska. The Hotline is housed in the Farm Law office of the Nebraska Legal Services in Bancroft, Nebraska. The Farm Hotline is funded by Interchurch Ministries Farm Crisis Council. Financial, legal and counseling services and referrals are available through the Hotline. Farm Finance and Legal Assistance Clinics These clinics, sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture s Farm Mediation Service, are free. They are held monthly in Norfolk, Ainsworth, Valentine, Grand Island, Lexington, North Platte, Alliance, and Beatrice. Clinics are staffed by experienced farm and ranch financial counselors, by attorneys experienced in farm and ranch issues, including debtor/creditor and Farm Services Agency work, and by farm and ranch mediators of the Nebraska Farm Mediation Service. To sign up for Clinics, call the Hotline. Legal Aid of Nebraska Provides free legal services to income eligible individuals throughout the state. They represent individuals and families who cannot otherwise afford legal representation. Representation is limited to civil matters and does not include representation in criminal matters. Volunteer Lawyers Project or This is a referral service provided by the Nebraska State Bar Association. It is a way of attempting to obtain free legal representation through the efforts of volunteer lawyers. Mediation Services The Nebraska Farm Mediation Service Administered through the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the Farm Mediation Service offers financial preparation and mediation to assist borrowers and their lenders in resolving agriculture debt issues. The Nebraska Farm Mediation Service also offers mediation to help producers who have received an adverse decision from a USDA agency work through the situation with agency representatives. The Nebraska Beginning Farmer Service The Nebraska Department of Agriculture administers, the Beginning Farmer Tax Credit Act. The program encourages owners of agriculture assets (land, machinery, livestock facilities, etc.) to rent to an eligible beginning farmer to help him get started. The owner receives the rent from the beginning farmer plus the

2 tax credit. The tax credit can become a valuable asset to be used by a Nebraska beginning farmer to encourage an owner to rent to him/her. More information maybe found on the Nebraska Department of Agriculture Web Page: Office of Dispute Resolution Interpersonal, civil dispute mediation service referrals to community-based centers. Human Needs Counseling Outreach Mental Health Therapy (COMHT) No-cost vouchers for professional counseling for persons affected by the rural crisis. Emergency Food Pantry Assistance Statewide referrals to local emergency food pantries. Pantries are located in virtually every county in Nebraska. Community Action Agencies Private nonprofit corporation which, in addition to making a referrals to other programs, administer the following programs and services: immunization, WIC (Women and Infant Children), CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program), Joint Housing Authority (housing assistance), weatherization, home owner education (what to do before, during and after purchasing a home), family services (food pantries, tax counseling for elderly, car seats for infants, etc.), FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Assistance), homeless programs, case management, Americorp, and early intervention services (assistance for toddlers under age 3 with disabilities or in need of special education). Nebraska Department of Insurance Consumer Affairs Division Responsible for providing the public with insurance information & assistance, as well as verifying & ensuring the proper handling of insurance transactions. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend programs to strengthen marriages. Nonrefundable registration fee of $ Additional donations are accepted. Kids Connection (toll free) Information on obtaining free medical care for children in income-qualified households. Statewide Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Hotline hour hotline and referrals to safe shelters. Division on Aging Health and Human Services A resource for information on programs and laws affecting elderly Nebraskans. (Request their useful publication, Resource Guide for Elderly Nebraskans. ) Every Woman Matters Provides Breast Exams and Pap Smears at reduced rates or free, based on income. Nebraska Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Hour Helpline. For promoting healthy mothers and healthy babies. Doctor referrals. Nurses answer this line for general health questions. Hotline for Disability Services A resource for Nebraskans with disabilities. They have experienced specialists and reliable information to quickly respond to disability concerns. Veterans Benefits Contact your County Veterans Service Officer for funeral and emergency assistance. Nebraska Advocacy Provides protection in advocacy in mental and physical disabilities.
