1 Instruction Goal: To provide opportunities for students to develop concepts and skills related to solving linear sstems of equations b graphing Common Core Standards Algebra: Solve sstems of equations. A-REI.. Solve sstems of linear equations eactl and approimatel (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphicall. A-REI.11. Eplain wh the -coordinates of the points where the graphs of the equations = f() and = g() intersect are the solutions of the equation f() = g(); find the solutions approimatel; e.g., using technolog to graph the functions, make tables of values, or find successive approimations. Include cases where f() and/or g() are linear, polnomial, rational, absolute value, eponential, and logarithmic functions. 5 Discussion Guide Instruction To support students in reflecting on the activities and to gather some formative information about student learning, use the following prompts to facilitate a class discussion to debrief the station activities. Prompts/Questions 1. How do ou solve sstems of linear equations b graphing?. How do ou know if a sstem of linear equations has infinite solutions? 3. How do ou know if a sstem of linear equations has no solutions?. How can ou use a graphing calculator to graph and solve sstems of linear equations?. Give an eample of a graph of a linear sstem that is used in the real world. Think, Pair, Share Have students jot down their own responses to questions, then discuss with a partner (who was not in their station group), and then discuss as a whole class. Suggested Appropriate Responses 1. Graph each line. Their point of intersection is the solution to the linear sstem.. Graph each line. If the lines are the same line then the have infinite solutions. Or, if the lines have the same slope and -intercept, then there are infinite solutions. 3. Graph each line. If the lines are parallel or have no point of intersection, the sstem has no solutions..
