Week 1 Elements of Poetry You have studied fiction, non-fiction, and drama. You will now embark on a short study of poetry, particularly considering how and why it is different from prose. In doing so, you will examine the power and expressive potential of imagery and other kinds of figurative language. This week you will be encountering poems from a variety of cultures, noting the ways in which poetic form is universal. 2 ! Do Dialectical Journal for Poetry The term dialectic means the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer. Think of your dialectical journal exercise as a series of conversations between you and the text (poem). The process is meant to help you develop a better understanding of the poems you have read. Use your journal to incorporate your personal responses to the poems, your ideas about the themes, and aspects of the poetry that you would like to discuss. Look for lines that seem significant, powerful, thought-provoking, or (best of all!) puzzling. Imagery in poetry appeals to any of the reader s senses. It intensifies the impact of the poet s words as s/he shows us with his words rather then just tells us how s/he feels. Do your best to seek out imagery-rich lines in selecting the quotes from the poetry to copy on the left hand side of the dialectical journal. SAMPLE LINE(S) FROM THE POEM Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms, /Strong and content I travel the open road. (lines 7-8) MY COMMENTARY/RESPONSE/ANALYSIS From the title of this poem, I got the idea that the speaker was a happy-go-lucky hippy type traveler who just spent his time journeying from place to place. He seemed very content. However, by the time I reached these last lines in the poem, I realized that there is more to his past than he first lets on. Clearly he has been an academic person as is indicated by libraries and querulous criticisms. Most likely he is referring to his life as a writer and the pressures and stresses that have worn upon him due to that existence. I get a sense of how happy he is to be walking away from that prison. My perception of the speaker as a vagabond shifted to one of him as a brave, energetic, restless but purposeful individual. He is sharing with us that somewhere along the line in his life he had a change of heart and is now pursuing the pathway that makes him feel strong and content. I believe him and respect him for deciding how he wants to spend his time and not letting his success in life be determined by how others respond to him and/or what they expect of him. CP Eng 9 p 2

3 Week 2 Poetry in Many Voices Do the place you live and the time at which you exist have an impact on who you are? Absolutely. It would follow, then, that these elements impact writers and therefore literature to a great to degree. This week you will take a look at a diverse selection of poems. Many of the poets explore questions of identity and culture in their poems. They ask questions about how important surrounding and experiences are and what impact they have on our sense of who we are. All use language to create vivid imagery at the heart of the meaning of each poem. Prepare the poem of your choice from Week 1 or Week 2 for recitation from memory. 1) Copy the poem word for word, paying attention to every capital letter and every punctuation mark. 2) Annotate the poem following the Steps to Annotate a Poem. Answer the six questions at the bottom of the Annotating Poetry page for your poem. 3) Memorize one line at a time. Split your poem into easily digestible chunks and memorize each line thoroughly. Keep in mind the line s meanings and structure (as mentioned in earlier steps) this will help you connect each line to the ones before and after. 4) Practice, practice, practice! Now that you ve got all the parts down, all you have to do is put everything together. 5) Keep meaning in mind. Your recitation for your class/teacher next week should convey your voice, articulation, and gestures to convey not just the words of the poem but more importantly its meaning. 5 Week 3 Writing About Poetry This week you will learn the components of a successful informative/explanatory essay that analyzes a poem and, after studying a sample, you will write an essay of your own. You may select any poem from week 1 or 2 except for My Father s Waltz by Theodore Roethke (subject of the sample essay). Objectives: Write an informative/explanatory essay that analyzes the author s use of poetic devices to achieve meaning. Recite a memorized poem in the appropriate tone and with a sense of audience.! Review the components of an informative/explanatory essay about literature. INTRODUCTION! Hook! Title, Author & Purpose (of poem)! Thesis that answers the question being asked BODY PARAGRAPHS (3)! RAP: Restate the question; Answer with a piece of knowledge; Prove you are right by connecting the answer to the question.! Introduced Quote! Analysis of the Quote. These sentences will go into detail about how your quote supports the thesis of the essay.! Concluding sentence that goes back to the RAP. CONCLUSION! Restate the thesis in new words! Give a finished feeling to the essay! Leave the reader with something to think about CP Eng 9 p 5

6 ! Read and study Sample Response to Literature Essay: Theodore Roethke s My Papa s Waltz : Not the Dance It Seems In the Introduction: Underline the Hook with a wavy line. Underline the Title, Author and Purpose with a double underline. Highlight the thesis with a yellow highlighter. In each Body Paragraph: Underline the RAP with a green pencil, marker or crayon. Underline the Introduced quote with a yellow marker or crayon. Underline the Analysis of the Quote with a red pencil, marker, or crayon. Underline the Concluding Sentence with green since it goes back to the RAP. In the Conclusion: Highlight the restatement of the thesis with a yellow highlighter. Underline the part that gives a finished feeling to the essay with little dots. Circle the sentences the leave you with something to think about.! Revisit the poems from weeks 1 and 2 and decide which you will analyze in your essay. You may select the poem that you have memorized and are reciting this week but you don t have to.! Complete the DIDLS graphic organizer on your selected poem.! Write an essay in response to the following prompt: What is the theme of the poem you have read and how do the imagery and poetic devices you have studied such as diction, figurative language, mood, rhyming (or lack thereof), sound devices, etc. contribute to the poem s message?! Complete the Poetry Analysis Graphic Organizer on your selected poem.! Write the first draft of your essay. You must use one of the following sentences starters indicated below for the components of your Body Paragraphs: RAP: First/Second/Last of all, the poet uses To begin/secondly/finally, one example of occurs in the stanza Initially/In addition/lastly, the author uses to illustrate CP Eng 9 p 6
