The Tennessee Genealogical Society was founded in 1952 and chartered by the state in It is a nonprofit and tax exempt organization completely staffed and run by volunteers. THE MISSION OF THE SOCIETY: To acquire and study genealogical history and records, and to publish these records for the purpose of preserving them in libraries and archives. MEMBERSHIP is open to all individuals and institutions interested in genealogy. Annual dues for individuals and institutions of $25.00 ($35.00 for family membership) includes a subscription to THE TENNESSEE Genealogical MAGAZINE, Ansearchin News and discounts on other TNGS products. New membership applications and renewal forms can be found at bits & pieces of Tennessee history & genealogy This is a collection of articles published in the The Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, Ansearchin News during the last several years. They are interesting and thought provoking. Examples: The 1870 Memphis, with dirt (dust or mud) streets and thousand of horses and mules, does not portray the clean/bright towns depicted in the John-Waynecowboy movies. Can you imagine the aroma? Did a mule really drown in a mud hole at Main and Monroe? (Page 57) Imagine the glee of the citizens of Memphis as they giggle at the Allegheny. This was a most wonderful war vessel (Page 51) Certificates of Tennessee Ancestry available only from The Tennessee Genealogical Society In 1986, in conjunction with the Tennessee governors state promotion of the COME HOME TO TENNESSEE, inviting all who had ancestry in Tennessee to visit the state. The Tennessee Genealogical Society initiated its Tennessee Ancestry Program, and since that time the Society has published two volumes of Tennessee Settlers and Their Descendants, tracing the genealogical history of some of the state s earliest settlers and their descendants to the present. Proof of enrollment is a beautiful certificate on parchment type paper with gold borders suitable for framing. The Society encourages anyone with Tennessee ancestry to enroll in the program and solicits your help in publicizing it. Send for application and particulars on enrollment to: The Tennessee Genealogical Society, P.O. Box , Germantown, TN Or download at Books published by TNGS are fully surname indexed and produced with protective coverings and rigid spines. Tragedy!! What does the future hold for the 150 or so newly-made widows and their children? With their husbands and breadwinners gone, they must now vacate the coal company houses that they have called home. (Page 38) Sipping-Whiskey. Legal drug use? (Page 89) These bits and pieces of Tennessee history prove again that life is fragile. Our ancestors daily faced the need to survive; physically, emotionally, and economically, and that they did. Volume 2 includes indexes covering the period (contains 422 pages) Tennessee Settlers and Their Descendants In 1986 the TNGS initiated The TENNESSEE ANCESTRY CERTIFICATE program to recognize and honor the early settlers who helped shape the great state of Tennessee. Almost 1,500 of the certificates were issued to applicants who submitted documentation proving that their prime ancestor lived in the area that is now Tennessee from the first settlement in 1769 through the year Using information compiled from this program, the Society published Tennessee Settlers and Their Descendants, Vol. 1 tracing the genealogical history of some of the state s earliest settlers and their descendants to the present. Volume 2 is a compilation of information submitted after January 1, This volume reports on 266 early Tennessee families with over 1,400 surnames fully indexed. The CD combines volumes 1 and 2 and reports on more than 1,700 families who were in what is now Tennessee prior to 1880 and their descendants. Both volumes published on a searchable CD Each of the five Family Record Charts Books is a compilation of family charts submitted to TNGS by members during the life of the Society. Each volume contains approximately 250 charts and is fully indexed by surname. (The index of each volume was printed in The Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, Ansearchin News current at the time of publication.) These ridged spine soft-back books are $20.00 each A full set of five volumes contains more than 1,250 family charts.
