Watersports Participation Survey 2014 Full Report
Introduction The research has been continuously conducted by Arkenford since 2002 with BMF and RYA our original partners, MCA and RNLI joining in 2005 and BCU and MMO joining in more recent years. Over the years there have been several changes to the sample and boating and watersport activities surveyed, details of which are provided below. The Survey The 2014 results enable us to give an insight into trends by activity over a 13 year period for the 12 Any boating activities and for trends for the additional 9 activities surveyed between 2004 and 2009 and again in 2011 to The data on which the analyses have been based, come from a nationally representative sample of around 12,000 respondents across the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) via omnibus. The surveys prior to 2005 had a sample of 6,000 and only covered Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), as there was no omnibus survey facility in place covering Northern Ireland. The weighted sample provides information representative of the UK population in terms of age, gender, socio-economic grouping and origin. In 2011, in addition to the omnibus survey a bespoke online survey was introduced to ask more detailed questions of a representative sample of watersports participants. In 2014 the sample for this survey was 2,562. This survey is only possible with the face to face omnibus as the results of the omnibus are used to correctly weight the profile of participants in each of the individual watersport activities. 2
The Questions Each respondent is asked if they have taken part in each of the watersport activities over the 12 months preceding September when the survey is conducted. As far as possible the descriptions of each activity are provided in layman s terms to allow all respondents, whatever their level of expertise, to give accurate replies: To make sure the respondents are understanding what is meant by the terms used, the following definitions are provided to them: small sail boats are dinghies, open keelboats and multihulls (not including seaside inflatables) which tend to be brought ashore after use. yachts are usually left in the water, have cooking facilities and a cabin for sleeping on board. power boating is defined as fast craft that plane over water whilst motor boating / cruising is defined as river boating or coastal motor cruising Relevant respondents are then asked more detailed questions on each sport they participate in. 3
Glossary Any Boating Activity: covers the 12 core activities measured since 2002: Small sail boat racing Other small sail boat activities Yacht racing Yacht cruising Power boating General motor boating/cruising Canal boating Canoeing Rowing/Skulling Windsurfing Water skiing & wakeboarding Using personal watercraft Any watersports activity: covers the 12 core activities to the left plus the additional watersport activities that have been included during various years since 2004: Surfboarding/ Body boarding/ Paddle boarding Kitesurfing Angling Cliff climbing activities Coastal walking activities Spending general leisure time at the beach Outdoor Swimming Leisure sub-aqua diving (open water - from the shore or boat) Coasteering 4
Headlines Participation in any of the activities fell slightly by 2% points on last years figures to 26.8%. This shows a best estimate volume of participation amongst UK adults of around 13.1m. However, this figures still remains higher than in 2011 and *Orange figures indicate the maximum row value Although overall participation has fallen, participation in boating activities has stayed at a similar level to last year at 7.1% of UK adults. This represents a best estimate of 3.5m UK adult participants. Although there has been a relative decline in boating participation over the study period, these results continue to show the levelling out that was reported last year. 5
Headlines cont. A return to a more normal UK Summer in terms of weather has possibly had an impact on the falling participation rate for The 2014 participation rate is still higher than average for the period so it is possible that the bumper participation in 2013 has had a lasting effect into this year. Canoeing participation rate continues to rise and has now reached a high of 3.1% participation (contributes a volume of 1.5m people). In 2013, we reported a rise in casual participants in boating activities (less than 6 times) but a decrease in the more enthusiastic participants. The shift this year has been back to nearer the normal level of enthusiastic participants at 77%. There has been a decline in the proportion of participation in the UK. This could be due to the falling number of domestic holidays or also the weather. Female participation in any boating activity continues a steady increase since A similar steady increase in participation is seen in the older group (55+). The volume increase since 2002 stands at 66%. In terms of boat ownership, the number of households owning a boat/craft has decreased to 713,000 (2.69%) but the number of boats/craft owned in total have increased from 2013 to 1.21m. 6

Leisure time at the beach, coastal walking and outdoor swimming continue to have the largest contribution to participation. Out of the any boating activities, canoeing was participated in by an estimated 1.5m UK adult residents and for any activities, an estimated 7.3m spent general leisure time at the beach. Overall the participation rate for any activity in 2014 stands at 26.8% of UK residents. This represents an estimate of 13.1m people but this could range from 12.8m to 13.4m. 7

In terms of volume this is a fall by roughly 1m people. However, this fall is driven by the decline in participation of general leisure time at the beach (decline of 1m participants) and outdoor swimming (decline of 0.5m) which make up the largest proportion of participants. Apart from the decline in these 2 activities, the majority of activities have remained at a similar level to
Participation by Gender As is the continual year to year trend, the proportion of male participants is greater than the proportion of females in nearly all activities. The exceptions to this are in coastal walking and leisure time at the beach like in 2013 but also additionally this year in motor boating/cruising and canal boating. In terms of volume, male participation was around 6.7m in any activity and female participation was at 6.4m. 20% 20% 9
Participation by Age Participation rates amongst all age groups are down for any activity but for any boating activity those aged over 55 are participating more than in Overall, participation is mainly split between those aged and those aged 35-54: Manual sports are dominated by year olds. Power sports are dominated by year olds. Yacht activities prove the most popular amongst 55 year olds and it is in these sailing activities where this older group have shown the greatest increases in participation. 10
Participation by SEG Participating rates are highest among those classed as AB SEG in all but one activity. The exception being canal boating, where those classed as C1 have the highest participation rates. 11
Proportion of boating participants by frequency For any boating activity this year has seen a slight fall in those that we term casuals (those participating in an activity less than 5 times a year) and a rise in the enthusiasts (those that participate over 6 times a year). Long term trends show the proportions tend to stay at similar levels. 12

Distribution of participation Boating activity distribution of events Any activity distribution of events This years bespoke survey asked respondents to select a specific point on the map where they last participated in an activity. Using this information we have been able to create heat maps to show the distribution of events. 15 South East 20.2% London 5.2% South West 21.5% North East 2.2% North West 7.0% Yorkshire 7.6% West Midlands 7.8% East Midlands 5.0% East 6.3% Scotland 7.2% Wales 7.7% N Ireland 0.8% IoM 1.4% South East 21.6% London 3.0% South West 24.6% North East 4.5% North West 6.4% Yorkshire 6.6% West Midlands 2.7% East Midlands 3.2% East 6.3% Scotland 7.4% Wales 11.0% N Ireland 2.2% IoM 0.4% For any activity, events occur all around the UK but with a higher distribution on the coast. Inland areas which appear to have a higher frequency are London, Peak District and around Birmingham In terms of events, 46.2% are found in the South East or South West. For any boating activity the pattern is very similar with the south coast dominating participation. Here the distribution is more concentrated around the regions mentioned previously. London, Birmingham and the Peak District remain popular but the Lake District and Merseyside area appear more popular.

Residents in Scotland continue to show an improvement and participation here is up 7.1% points for any activity from any boating activity participation rate has also increased from 4.5% in Participation among Southern England residents continue to be at higher levels than the rest of the country.
Seasonal Participation All activities This year has seen Summer participation fall on 2013, albeit returning to more normal levels after what appears to be a one off Summer in The weather was likely the biggest factor in this. Boating activities Still, the majority of participation has taken place in the Summer with 58% of all events and 53% of all boating events. There are only a few exceptions to events being dominated by Summer participation. Canal boating and Rowing/skulling both record a greater proportion of events outside of June-August. 17
Seasonal Participation - detailed 18
Coastal Participation All activities For any activity participation, the proportion taking place at the coast has increased. This change goes against the general trend for the region of participation which has been showing a shift to more inland activities. Boating activities For any boating activity the participation has stayed around 50% for both inland and coastal activities. 19
Coastal Participation detailed experiences 20
Club or association membership Member proportion Small sail boat racing - dinghies 32.3% Small sail boat activities - dinghies 22.5% Yacht racing 34.3% Yacht cruising 19.8% Using personal watercraft - jet-ski/similar 3.9% Motor boating/cruising 14.9% Power boating 21.8% Canal boating 21.1% Water skiing/ Wake-boarding 30.5% Canoeing/kayaking 29.4% Rowing/Sculling 15.3% Windsurfing 7.9% surfboarding 3.2% Kitesurfing 18.2% Angling 19.3% Cliff climbing 4.7% Coastal walking - - Time at the beach - - Outdoor swimming 4.6% Leisure sub aqua diving 6.6% Coasteering 1.6% The table to the left shows that club membership is greater when an activity is less accessible. For example, small sail boat racing and yacht racing. This could also be the case for canoeing/kayaking and water-skiing which possibly require the resources which only a club could provide (e.g. power boats or the right water conditions). 21
Who owns the boat by activity The majority of participants who go boating do so on a friends or family members boat. The exceptions to this are in yacht cruising, rowing/skulling, canoeing and water skiing. For yacht cruising and canoeing, participants more regularly use their own boat/craft. For rowing/skulling, 26% are club owned. For water skiing, 15% are club owned and 17% are training centre owned. 22
UK vs. Abroad ownership Comparing ownership in the UK and abroad shows that 95% are kept in the UK, up for 92% in Power boats are the boat most likely kept abroad with only 86% in the UK and canal boats are the opposite with 97% kept in the UK. 23
