2 Read & React Offense: Layer Pass & Cut - pg. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Pass & Cut is most easily taught in the OUT formation - that means each of the spots on the perimeter must be filled by a player. Of course, it can also be taught in OUT and OUT depending on your post presence. If you want post players, your perimeter players must play on the 's. If you want post, your perimeter players must play on the 's. More on additional formations later. There are two reactions in this layer that must be automatic. Reaction #: If you pass one spot away, then you must cut. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame 6 x Reaction #: If the Spot above you, in the direction of the ball is empty, then you must fill it. If this happens, the cutter will always have an empty spot to fill out to. The Read Line: For most teams at any level, the -point line is the Read Line. The habit that must be automatic is this: If you are one Spot or one Pass away from the ball and your defender has even ONE foot over the Read Line, you must basket cut. And again, if the Spot above you is empty, then you must fill it. Here's a challenge: take 0 minutes with your team, put in this layer, and see what Pass & Cut does to their movement. And, remember, there are 9 other layers in the R&R, each building upon this foundation. If one layer has an immediate impact, imagine adding, 6, or 9. All Contents Proprietary. Copyright 0
3 Read & React Offense: Layer Pass & Cut - pg. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame If you have a Post player you want in the middle, Pass & Cut can be run in a OUT formation. There are 6 spots in this formation and generally, you'll want to keep the corners open to keep them available for future layer's actions. The rules remain the same. Rule #: if you pass one spot away, you must basket cut. Rule #: if there is an open spot above you, you must fill it. That means, in this case, must fill up to 's vacated spot. After the cut, must fill out to an open spot. Here, that's either the ball-side corner or the weak-side wing. Generally (unless you want to create an overload), the wing will be the best choice. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame 6 chooses to pass to and cuts. and must fill toward the ball. Again, can choose to fill the ball-side corner or the weak-side wing. The rules remain the same regardless of the choice. passes to and cuts. Since there is no one below, there isn't a player filling. can choose to return to the spot he/she just left or fill out to the weak-side corner. By the way, in the early stages of the R&R, the choices about where the cutter can fill could be predetermined by the coach. Perhaps you don't allow players to fill the corners until they have mastered the general rules. And, what does the post do? Well, that's another layer. All Contents Proprietary. Copyright 0
4 Read & React Offense: Layer Pass & Cut - pg. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame If you have two post players, you may consider the OUT formation. The spots are the same as the OUT spots, but again, generally, you'll want to keep the corners empty. Once the basics of the R&R have been learned, your team could easily flow between all three formations depending on your substitution patterns, the defense, or any other variable. As you've probably noted already, the rules of the R&R don't change even when the formation does. So, passes to and must basket cut. must fill the empty spot. can choose to fill out to the ball-side corner or the weak-side wing. could and should play off of the posts on his/her way out. passes to and cuts. There is no one to fill so can either fill the spot he/she just left or fill the opposite corner and create an overload. Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame Layer Overview: OUT Frame 6 passes to and cuts. Since has filled the corner, 's only option is to return to the original spot - and it doesn't hurt to work off of in the process. passes to and cuts. must fill the empty spot. can choose to fill the opposite wing or the near corner. The location of the post players is irrelevant. The rules for the perimeter players always remain the same. And remember, we're only demonstrating perimeter actions in this layer. Once you add the Post Pass & Cut Layer (Layer ), you will be able to easily integrate passing into and out of the post. All Contents Proprietary. Copyright 0
