1 Contact us: 12 Lant Street London SE1 1QH T: E: W: What is Listening Books? Listening Books provides a high-quality, affordable online and postal audiobook service for anyone who struggles to read in the usual way due to an illness, disability or learning difficulty such as dyslexia. By joining Listening Books, you will have access to thousands of fantastic audiobooks for leisure and learning and the best thing is, you can choose from three easily accessible formats. Our library boasts fiction and non-fiction titles and we support the National Curriculum from Key Stage 2 to A- Level, recording many set texts and study guides that are not available elsewhere. You can view our full catalogue by following this link: Benefits of the service Allows children to access and enjoy great books, full of fantastic stories. Allows children to listen to the same books that their friends and peers are reading Gives a greater understanding and enjoyment of literature Helps children reach their learning potential by offering audio versions of set texts and study guides Increases confidence in class discussions Improves word recognition and sentence structure Encourages independence 'Charlie is really enjoying his membership to Listening Books. He is nine years old and severely dyslexic. The audiobooks open up different worlds in his imagination. I think that it is brilliant that he can enjoy literature that matches his IQ. Parent of Listening Books member Becoming a member Membership fees start at just 20 per year, giving you access to thousands of titles during your membership. Step 1: Choose how you would like to access the books: Online Membership: Downloads and Internet Streaming ( 20 per year): Our online service is straightforward to use. All you need is internet access and a PC, Mac, laptop or mobile device to listen to audiobooks at any time of the day or night. For just 20 per year, we ll issue you with a unique username and password to enable you to access our huge online catalogue. Streamed or downloaded books are perfect for those members who need a title instantly for homework or revision. You can even pick up from where you left off by creating your own bookmarks.

2 Postal MP3 CD service ( 35 per year): MP3 CDs look just like standard CDs and can play on modern CD players, computers and DVD players. For just 35 per year you will have access to our full library of MP3 CDs which will be delivered straight to your door. You will have an allocation of two audiobooks in circulation at any one time; we re constantly adding new titles to our library and you can borrow as many as you like throughout your membership. All postage and packaging is included in the cost and there are no late fees! Combined Postal and Online Membership ( 45 per year): Not only will you be able to listen to your audiobooks downloaded or streamed, you ll also be able to receive them through the post. This option is available to you for just 45 per year. Step 2: Follow the link to join online: https://www.listening-books.org.uk/join-us.aspx or telephone our friendly library team on Paying for your membership couldn t be easier. You can choose to pay in full or spread the cost throughout the year. If you would find it difficult to pay the membership fee, please contact us as we have a limited number of free places available and may be able to help. Step 3: Start listening! Once we receive your completed application form, we will send you your welcome pack via , which will include everything you need to start enjoying your audiobooks. We are open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and our friendly library team are on hand should you need any help.

3 Robertʼs Story Kate Smith is the mother of Listening Books member Robert, 16, who, with the help of audiobooks, achieved fantastic exam results despite being diagnosed with dyslexia at an early age. Robert was a late reader; he s severely dyslexic and so isn t able to decipher new words very well at all. We eventually got him a part time placement at a speech and language unit when he was at junior school where a most dedicated and qualified teacher managed to turn things around with the help of Anthony Horowitz (well, his books in any case!). Audiobooks are very expensive and, at the time, all of our money went on obtaining independent, private assessments from speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists etc in order to make the best possible case for our appeals to SENDIST. A friend of mine told me about Listening Books and I couldn t believe I hadn t heard about your service earlier. We only signed up in the final year of his GCSEs I think but the study guides were really helpful. The audio version of An Inspector Calls really inspired Robert to go and see the play at the Wimbledon Theatre and prompted a lot of questions and discussions which I think really helped him in his course work and I was quite impressed with his interpretation and analysis. When we first discovered Robert was dyslexic, the thing I was most upset about was the fact that he wouldn t be able to enjoy books. I m an avid reader and I was very upset when the teacher when I asked what sort of impact this would have suggested that he might never read a book! From this respect, I think young dyslexics should be made aware that although they may have difficulty reading at the outset, they don t have to miss out on the pleasure of reading. My advice to any parent in a similar situation would be to sign up to Listening Books as soon as possible to take full advantage of the service. Take Listening Books with you whenever you go on car journeys; a good story can really get you hooked and it really helps children develop their listening skills. We ve often reached our destination but haven t been able to get out of the car until the end of the chapter! Robert passed 8 GCSEs in total, including English Literature Grade A and English Language Grade B a great achievement for him! Articles for the Blind If you can read this text (size 12 font) but nothing smaller with your spectacles on, you qualify for the Articles for the Blind postage service. Please tick the box on the application form if this applies to you.
