1 Using Images and Animations in PowerPoint 2013 PowerPoint offers a number of options for adding image files to your presentation. You can find these types of files online, or create and upload your own files to use. The media files will display directly in PowerPoint, allowing you to create engaging presentations to use in the classroom or post to Blackboard for students to view at home. Inserting an image from a file 1. Open a presentation and add a new slide. The layout for the slide should be a title and content layout with six icons on it. 2. Click on the picture icon in the content area. 3. Browse to the folder where your images are stored (on a PC, your Pictures library will automatically open). 4. Select the image you would like to use by double-clicking on it or selecting it and then clicking Insert. 5. Click and drag on the handles to make your shape smaller or larger. If the picture was a very small to begin with, you may not be able to stretch it without it becoming blurry. NOTE: If the image seems to be cut off in some way, try using the menu Insert Picture. Inserting images from Clip Art 1. Go to Insert Online Pictures. 2. In the Insert Picture window, enter a relevant search term. 3. Click on the picture you wish to insert. PPT FCLD

2 Some important notes about downloading images: If you are searching in Google images or an image database (such as istockphoto or ArtSTOR), you will see a small thumbnail (preview) image first. Be sure to click on that image to access and download the full-size version. Typically, the thumbnail version is too small to use. Be sure to check the copyright limitations of the images you are downloading. If you are using the images in a public/commercial presentation (one that will be recorded or downloaded), it is recommended that you either create your own images or use ones from a paid graphics site. It is OK to make a large image smaller, but never try to stretch an image to make is larger. Small images will look grainy and blurry if you try to resize them. Adding a Slideshow of Images If you would like to show a series of images in your presentation (what PowerPoint calls a Photo Album ), you can insert and edit all of your photos in one step. Here s what to do: 1. Go to Insert Photo Album. 2. Click on File/Disk to select the photos you would like to add. Repeat until all photos are added. (Hold down the control key to select multiple pictures at once.) 3. Optional: After each image insert, click on New Text Box to add title pages between slides. 4. You can adjust the order of the images if you like using the Up and Down arrows just below the listed images. There are also controls for adjusting the image contrast, etc. 5. You can edit individual slides and add animations or text as needed. 6. 3 Editing Pictures When you insert a picture into PowerPoint, the pink Picture Tools tab should appear at the top of the screen. If you do not see it, click on the picture you inserted to make the tab appear. There are several tools on the picture toolbar you can use to crop your image, adjust brightness and contrast, change an image to black and white, grayscale, or washout (watermark), change a background color to transparent, etc. Float your cursor over each icon to see what it can adjust. Format Menu Managing Image File Sizes To keep your presentation file size small and running smoothly, you will want to compress the images in your presentation. To do this, make sure an image is selected, then click on the pink Picture Tools tab at the top of the screen (see above). Under the Format tab, select Compress Pictures. 1. Deselect the first box labeled Apply only to this picture. (We want all pictures to be compressed.) 2. Select Delete cropped areas of pictures. 3. Set the resolution to Screen (150 ppi). 4. Click OK. Now view your presentation to make sure that there is no loss of quality after compressing your images. Compressing Pictures Adding Animations to Pictures You can use PowerPoint animations to cause images to appear, move, and disappear either on click or as part of a sequence of events. This allows you to can focus on important points, control the flow of information, and add interest to your presentation. To add an animation: 1. Select an image by clicking on it. 2. Click on the Animations tab. PPT FCLD

4 3. Select an animation style from the menu. You can click the Effect Options arrow to view additional animation choices for a selected style. Adding an Animation 4. Use the options to the farthest right of the menu named Start/Duration/Delay to control the animation s timing. 5. Click the Preview button on the left to view how your animation will work. PPT FCLD
