1 Fellowship in Medical Education Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Introduction This new post, funded through the London Deanery, is designed to support SpRs-STRs who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The 6-month out of programme post, based at the St Mary s Hospital campus of Imperial, is aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research within an internationallyrecognised centre of excellence. The post The postholder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual. Although details will depend on the experience of the appointee, it is anticipated that two days per week will be allocated to hands-on teaching of junior medical staff; two days a week to supervised educational research; and one day per week to a relevant clinical commitment. Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally. Participants will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career. The postholder will be encouraged to undertake a Masters programme in education related to their specialty. This may be the Imperial M Ed in Surgical Education (see below), the Masters in Clinical Education at the Institute of Education, or an equivalent programme. Course costs will be supported by the post. The postholder will attend monthly seminars at the London Deanery on various aspects of medical education, along with all other Fellowship in Medical Eduction (FME) holders. It is also expected that FMEs will attend the London Deanery s range of faculty development courses, contributing as attendee, teacher or co-facilitator (depending on experience and expertise). Although this 6-month out of programme post will not carry prospective approval for training, ad personam approval for training may be obtainable. No study leave funding is attached, as this is provided within the post. The educational mentor (Dr Roger Kneebone, Senior Lecturer in Surgical Education) will work closely with clinical colleagues (including Mr Paraskeva Paraskevas, Senior Lecturer in Surgery, and Dr Ruth Brown, Consultant in A&E and Trust Clinical Tutor). The three key components of the post are as follows:

2 1. Teaching Hands-on teaching will involve participation in regular formal sessions within the Trust, as part of the Foundation programme for F1 and F2 doctors (two half-days per week). This will include small group teaching, ward and clinicbased activities where appropriate. Involvement in programme evaluation and development will be encouraged. The programme at St Mary s is directed by Dr Ruth Brown together with the Training Programme Directors Dr Colin Tench and Dr Nicola Batrick. Other opportunities for teaching medical staff of other grades will be available,as will additional opportunities for multidisciplinary postgraduate teaching (including Imperial s Perioperative Specialist Practitioner and Surgical Care Practitioner programmes) and undergraduate teaching. The postholder will be encouraged to contribute actively to teaching development within the Foundation and other programmes. While some undergraduate teaching will form part of the post, the primary emphasis is on postgraduate education. 2. Educational research The postholder will have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational research activities, centred on the training of postgraduate doctors but including other groups of learners. These options are aligned with existing research activity and include (but are not confined to) the following: Evaluation of F1 and F2 teaching programmes within the Trust, identifying problem areas and developing possible solutions Involvement in NW London Deanery General Surgical Skills Programme for surgical SpRs at St Mary s (director Mr G Hanna) Researching the operating theatre as a site of multidisciplinary teaching and learning Developing patient-focused simulation (hybrid combinations of inanimate simulators with professional actors) within postgraduate education and assessment Cross-boundary teaching and learning Education for new professional roles in surgery (Perioperative Specialist Practitioner and Surgical Care Practitioner, Clinical Site manager as part of the work for EWTD) Exploring the concept of excellence in teaching and how it changes in response to Masters level education Involvement in evolution of the M Ed in Surgical Education It is anticipated that the postholder will generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations (national and international) and publications in peerreviewed medical and educational journals. 3. Clinical commitment A clinical commitment of up to 1 day per week with the Trust will ensure that the postholder maintains their clinical involvement during the attachment, and 2

3 encounters postgraduate doctors in a clinical setting. Details of this clinical component will depend on the appointee s clinical specialty and experience, but might include outpatient clinic or related activity. Educational support This will be provided by: Dr Roger Kneebone (Senior Lecturer in Surgical Education and codirector of the M Ed in Surgical Education) Dr Ruth Brown (Consultant in A&E and Trust Clinical Tutor) Mr Paraskeva Paraskevas (Consultant Surgeon and Senior Lecturer in Surgery) Additional expertise is available from Ms Heather Fry (Reader in Higher and Professional Education, Head of Imperial s Centre for Educational Development and co-director of the M Ed in Surgical Education) and other colleagues. Support will be provided in practical teaching skills development, as well as in research design, implementation and dissemination. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Imperial College London was recently ranked 5 th in the world (Times Higher Educational Supplement). Following Secretary of State for Health approval, the UK s first Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC), was formed on 1 October 2007, when St Mary s NHS Trust merged with Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and integrated with Imperial College London. The new Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is the foundation for the AHSC, and the largest NHS Trust in the UK. Surgical educational research within Imperial s Department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology offers a range of facilities, including a high-fidelity simulated operating theatre; a multidiscplinary clinical skills centre; a range of simulator technology; a thriving programme of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across a wide range of specialties. The Imperial Masters in Education (M Ed) in Surgical Education is the only programme of its kind in the UK. Established in 2005, it is aimed at those in surgical and educational specialties and covers a wide range of theoretical and practical aspects relating to surgical education. It can be taken part-time (2 years) or full time (1 year). St Mary s St Mary s NHS Trust was formed on 1 st April 1993 and comprises St Mary s Hospital, the Western Eye Hospital, and acute services at St Charles Hospital. St Mary s NHS Trust is a constituent member of Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM). The Trust is responsible for an area of approximately 13 square miles and comprises part of the City of Westminster and Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute and specialist services to a local 3

4 community of approximately 337,900 residents. In addition the Trust provides a number of specialist services to patients outside the local area. The Trust has 541 beds and employs over 2,500 people. St Mary s is situated in an uniquely accessible position, being both adjacent to the West End, Paddington Station and to the Heathrow Link. St Mary s Hospital, London W2 St Mary s Hospital provides the majority of services for the Trust. These include a variety of one stop clinics such as Breast and Urology. Also at St Mary s is a dedicated training unit for minimal access or keyhole surgery together with other extensive teaching and research facilities. St Charles Hospital, London W10 St Charles Hospital is managed by the local Primary Care Trust. St Mary s runs a neuro-rehabilitation ward and orthopedics and rheumatology out patient services. There is a also a Minor Injuries Unit run by Nurse Practitioners. Western Eye Hospital, Marylebone Road The Western Eye Hospital is internationally renowned for it s highly specialised services which includes special care to patients with eyelid problems or artificial eyes. Hammersmith Hospitals Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust (HHNT) has a worldwide reputation as a centre for excellence in patient care, medical science and teaching. It comprises three outstanding hospitals in west London: Hammersmith Hospital - A centre for respiratory medicine, rheumatology, cardiac sciences, gastrointestinal disease, cancer, particularly gastrointestinal and HPB, lung and solid organ cancers, and renal medicine. Charing Cross Hospital - A centre for major trauma and serious illness, emergency surgery, neuroscience, musculoskeletal and vascular services. Queen Charlotte s & Chelsea Maternity Hospital - An advanced obstetrics and fertility centre, women s health and ambulatory paediatrics HHNT has a close partnership with the Medical Research Council, based at the Hammersmith site. The Trust is one of the UK s leading tertiary medical centres providing pioneering clinical services to patients from across the UK and internationally. Specialties cover the full range of acute adult clinical care and the Trust is home to many regional and supraregional services. In November 2005 the West London Renal and Transplant Centre opened. This dedicated 40 million building has created a world-class centre for research in renal medicine and transplantation. HHNT is a pioneer in offering new treatment and care options to patients in cardiology, imaging, neuroscience s, haematology, cancer, surgery and women s services. It has also been at the forefront of developing and implementing infection control standards that are now being applied nation-wide. Further information, including the organisational structure, is available at Imperial College Of Science, Technology & Medicine Imperial College of Science, Technology was established in 1907 by the merger of the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City & Guilds College. The Rector, Sir Richard Sykes, is the College s Academic Head and Chief Executive Officer. The Engineering, Science and Management departments are based at the main site in South Kensington. There are approximately 10,000 students and some 5,000 staff, including approximately 2,500 academic and research staff. The number of postgraduate students in relation to total student numbers is higher than for any other UK university and reflects the College s world-wide reputation for research excellence. The Imperial College School of Medicine was established in its present form on 1 st August 1997 by the merger of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, the National Heart and Lung Institute (Royal Brompton Hospital) and St Mary's Hospital which had joined Imperial College in The expanded ICSM is one of the largest medical schools in the UK with a significant research activity. Basic medical sciences will be taught at the South Kensington Campus and academic clinical groups will be located at, or adjacent to, St Mary s, Charing Cross, Chelsea & Westminster, Royal Brompton and Hammersmith Hospitals. 5
