3 The Pew Research Center s Prject fr Excellence in Jurnalism released a reprt earlier this week dcumenting the striking increase in the number f thse getting news n smartphnes and tablet cmputers. Our new finding abut the size f the tablet ppulatin emerged frm a survey that was cncluded during rughly the same time perid. Methdlgy This reprt is based n the findings f a survey n Americans' use f the Internet. The results in this reprt are based n data frm telephne interviews cnducted by Princetn Survey Research Assciates Internatinal frm July 16 t August 7, 2012, amng a sample f 2,253 adults, age 18 and lder. Telephne interviews were cnducted in English and Spanish by landline (1,353) and cell phne (900, including 469 withut a landline phne). Fr results based n the ttal sample, ne can say with 95% cnfidence that the errr attributable t sampling is plus r minus 2.3 percentage pints. Fr results based Internet users 1 (n=1,873), the margin f sampling errr is plus r minus 2.5 percentage pints. In additin t sampling errr, questin wrding and practical difficulties in cnducting telephne surveys may intrduce sme errr r bias int the findings f pinin plls. A cmbinatin f landline and cellular randm digit dial (RDD) samples was used t represent all adults in the United States wh have access t either a landline r cellular telephne. Bth samples were prvided by Survey Sampling Internatinal, LLC (SSI) accrding t PSRAI specificatins. Numbers fr the landline sample were selected with prbabilities in prprtin t their share f listed telephne husehlds frm active blcks (area cde + exchange + tw-digit blck number) that cntained three r mre residential directry listings. The cellular sample was nt list-assisted, but was drawn thrugh a systematic sampling frm dedicated wireless 100-blcks and shared service 100-blcks with n directry-listed landline numbers. New sample was released daily and was kept in the field fr at least five days. The sample was released in replicates, which are representative subsamples f the larger ppulatin. This ensures that cmplete call prcedures were fllwed fr the entire sample. At least 7 attempts were made t cmplete an interview at a sampled telephne number. The calls were staggered ver times f day and days f the week t maximize the chances f making cntact with a ptential respndent. Each number received at least ne daytime call in an attempt t find smene available. Fr the landline sample, interviewers asked t speak with the yungest adult male r female currently at hme based n a randm rtatin. If n male/female was available, interviewers asked t speak with the yungest adult f the ther gender. Fr the cellular sample, interviews were cnducted with the persn wh answered the phne. Interviewers verified that the persn was an adult and in a safe place befre administering the survey. Cellular sample respndents were ffered a pst-paid cash incentive fr their participatin. All interviews cmpleted n any given day were cnsidered t be the final sample fr that day. Weighting is generally used in survey analysis t cmpensate fr sample designs and patterns f nn-respnse that might bias results. A tw-stage weighting prcedure was used t weight this dualframe sample. 4 The secnd stage f weighting balances sample demgraphics t ppulatin parameters. The sample is balanced t match natinal ppulatin parameters fr sex, age, educatin, race, Hispanic rigin, regin (U.S. Census definitins), ppulatin density, and telephne usage. The Hispanic rigin was split ut based n nativity: U.S brn and nn-u.s. brn. The White, nn-hispanic subgrup is als balanced n age, educatin and regin. The basic weighting parameters came frm a special analysis f the Census Bureau s 2011 Annual Scial and Ecnmic Supplement (ASEC) that included all husehlds in the United States. The ppulatin density parameter was derived frm Census 2000 data. At PSRAI it is calculated by taking the prduct f three cmpnent rates: Cntact rate the prprtin f wrking numbers where a request fr interview was made Cperatin rate the prprtin f cntacted numbers where a cnsent fr interview was at least initially btained, versus thse refused Cmpletin rate the prprtin f initially cperating and eligible interviews that were cmpleted Thus the respnse rate fr the landline sample was 12 percent.
