The fact is that a person is almost always at the worst time of their life as our crews arrive to the incident. This can be difficult for even the firefighters to keep their spirits up when repeated calls are fatal or horrifying as seen in the Significant Events section of this report. This month, crews had a bit of encouragement when responding to an animal rescue call by a resident. There was a baby fox trapped in a man hole. Crews located the fox and engineered a method of retrieving it by creating a noose to pull it up. The fox was rescued without injury and scurried away. Chief Peterson was happy to hear that the only complaints will come from rabbits in the neighborhood.

There were firemen at my home on Ethelwin within minutes of the lightening striking my home. I feel very fortunate to live in an area where the response is so fast and everything is handles so well. You will all be in my prayers and will not be forgotten! Thanks so much, Jill Latimer
5 Call of the Month Concurrent Calls On a monthly basis, readers of these fire department monthly reports may wonder just how much time firefighters are out on emergency calls since there is so much time put into training and community involvement. This month alone they spent 336 hours performing community service, and 290 hours in training. Let s break the emergency response down by the hour since the crews work 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and 365 days per year. The month of May has 744 hours and our crews responded to 192 incidents during 102 of those hours. The average length of an incident this month was 32 minutes. Not included in this number is the time spent writing the NFIRS (National Fire Incident Reporting System) and EMS reports. The average time for report writing is between 15 and 20 additional minutes per incident adding between 48 and 63 hours. It is inevitable that incident times overlap since emergencies are not planned or predictable. PFD had 24 concurrent calls this month in which the duration of one overlapped the next dispatch time. This requires shift supervisors to manage the emergencies based on the priority and send crews to respond in the safest and quickest manner possible. With 24 overlapping incidents, it is obvious that shift supervisors must be ready for this situation every day and they must be ready to call in for more personnel to respond if a third or fourth dispatch is sent. On May 20, three emergencies were dispatched within 15 minutes. The first call was a motor vehicle accident in which nine personnel responded. The second incident was a structure fire in which four more personnel responded. The third incident was dispatched, then was dispatched a second time, as no one called in service. Since there was not more than one person to take the engine out, Chief Peterson and a POC responder went with the engine to that emergency. Situations such as this illustrate the necessity of having adequate personnel on shift and a dedicated group of Paid-on-Call firefighters employed at the department. Illustrated on the graph to the right are the call totals per hour. Crews are busiest at 9am, noon, 6pm and between 8pm and 10pm.
