1 Experience & Outcome: MNU 2-20a Having discussed the variety of ways and range of media used to present data, I can interpret and draw conclusions from the information displayed, recognising that the presentation may be misleading. Success Criteria How to do it: I can interpret information and answer questions from simple pictograms, charts, graphs and pie charts Which variety of apples is the most popular? How many students were born in February? How many animals were there in 2001?

Draw accurately simple graphs, e.g. pictographs bar graph, line graphs and pie charts Draw a pictograph to show the number of oranges eaten by each class. Primary 1 class eats 12 oranges Primary 2 class eats 6 oranges Primary 3 class eats 10 oranges Class Represents 4 oranges Oranges eaten Primary 1 Primary 2 Primary 3 When drawing a bar graph think about these rules. Use a pencil and ruler to draw axes and bars Use an appropriate scale..(use your times tables) Label your axes (colour could be used to show each label) Make sure your bars are of equal width Make sure the space between each bar is equal Draw your bars accurately using your scale Draw a bar graph to show how many students like each flavour of crisps. 4 A&D B Ed Eng Maths Science Techni Experience & Outcome: MNU 2-20b I have carried out investigations and surveys, devising and using a variety of methods to gather information and have worked with others to collate, organise and communicate the results in an appropriate way. Success Criteria Organise information in a range of ways effectively Choose an appropriate graph, chart or table to present their data Explain my choice of graph, chart or table Communicate the results of a survey in a clear and concise manner How to do it: Investigate the use of rooms within Selkirk High School. Make a frequency table to organise the information. Look at departments in the school and the number of rooms each use. For example: Department No of Classrooms Art & Design 2 Business Ed 2 English 4 Maths 4 Science 6 Technical 5 Choose an appropriate graph from, Pictograph, Bar Chart, Line Graph, Pie Chart, etc No of Rooms per department in SHS No of Rooms A bar chart was chosen because it displayed two sets of data one which was non numeric. It was also easy to draw and clearly illustrates the information relating to each department. The table, bar chart and text, are all part of the communication of the results of the survey. 4
5 Experience & Outcome: MNU 4-20a I can evaluate and interpret raw and graphical data using a variety of methods, comment on relationships I observe within the data and communicate my findings to others. Success Criteria How to do it: Interpret graphical information by analysing scale, key points, shape of graph, etc. Describe in words the connection between data and their graphs. BBC - GCSE Bitesize: Scatter graph activity Temperature ( C) Number of ice-creams sold Positive correlation If there is a correlation between two sets of data, it means they are connected in some way. We have seen that as the temperature increases, the number of ice-creams sold increases. The results are approximately in a straight line, with a positive gradient. We therefore say that there is positive correlation. Negative correlation Look at the following scatter diagram. It shows the connection between the number of weeks a song has been in the Top 40 and sales of the single for that week. 5
6 There is a definite a connection between the two sets of data, as the results are approximately in a straight line. As the number of weeks increases, sales decrease.
