1 The following is a break down of the specifications for modules on the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma IT Practitioners and the BTEC Extended Diploma IT Practitioner ( Networking & System Support and Software Development pathways). BTEC Subsidiary Diploma IT Pratitioners The course is designed to give all students a taste of each area of computing so that they can consider which of these they would like to continue their studies in. The Susidiary Diploma feeds in to the Extended Diploma which offer 2 pathways for continued study; Software Development and Networking & System Support. Unit Title Overview 1 Communication & Employability Skills for IT Understand both the personal attributes valued by employers and the principles of communicating and their own personal development needs. 2 Computer Systems Components of computer systems and develop the skills needed to recommend appropriate systems and set up and maintain computer systems. 6 Procedural Programming Principles of software design and be able to use tools to develop software designs. 10 Communication Technologies Communication principles of computer networks, know the elements of data communications to implement network communications. 25 Maintaining Computer Systems Organisational issues related to computer systems maintenance and develop the skills and knowledge required to plan and undertake routine maintenance activities and monitor and improve systems performance. 26 Mathematics for IT Practitioners Develop learner skills in mathematical techniques. Learners will also apply number systems including binary and hexadecimal and interpret data they have gathered for a defined purpose.

2 BTEC Extended Diploma IT Pratitioners (Networking & System Support) In the modern world the computer and network have become inextricably linked. Software uses the network and the network allows the software to work. Whether working as a Desktop or Network Technician, it is important that one understands the other to ensure succesful support and maintenance. Unit Title Overview Term 3 in Year One 3 Information systems How organisations use information and the surrounding use of information, know about information necessary to produce management information. 24 Controlling Systems Using IT Requirements of control systems and control loop operations, know how data is represented in control required to design and implement control systems. 30 Digital Graphics Understand different types of digital images and file formats and to be able to create, edit, modify and manipulate digital images of various types and complexity. Year Two 5 Managing Networks Network management functions and develop the knowledge and skills needed to use the tools and technologies available to the network manager. 7 Organisation System Security Potential threats to IT systems and the organisational issues related to IT security and know how to keep systems and data secure from these threats. 9 Computer Networks Key components of networked systems, know about network protocols and the services provided by network systems and develop the skills required to ensure network security.

3 12 IT Technical Support Technical support tools and techniques and organisational policies and procedures to source technical information and communicate advice and guidance to resolve technical problems. 13 IT Systems Troubleshooting & Repair Develop the skills to troubleshoot, find appropriate remedies and repair a range of hardware and software faults in computer systems. The unit will also ensure learners understand how organisational policies can affect troubleshooting activities. 17 Project Planning with IT Processes and tools used for project management and are able to plan a project, follow the plan and review the project management process. 19 Computer Systems Architecture Nnderlying architecture and components behind the functioning of computer systems. 32 Networked Systems Security Types and sources of network attacks and how to protect against them and develop the skills and understanding needed to plan for and protect a networked system. 33 Supporting Business Activity Importance of providing effective and efficient support for an organisation, and be able to develop skills and knowledge for carrying out tasks to support business activities.

4 BTEC Extended Diploma IT Pratitioners (Software Development) The role of the Software Developer is one which requires versatility and ability with a range of different software approaches and methods. As well as knowing about programming, a developer must be aware of the requirements and need for their work. This course helps wannabe software developers to understand not only the programming but the greater aspects too so that they can be effective programmers and employees.
