2 Job Summary The Manager, Recruitment & Marketing, Professional Programs, is responsible for developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating an effective recruitment & marketing strategy and activities to meet the Faculty of Applied Science enrollment goals for, and to build awareness of, the Professional Programs among a diversity of academically well-qualified prospective students. This position is based in UBC's Vancouver campus. International travel may be required. Organizational Status Reports to the Associate Dean, Education and Professional Development Faculty of Applied Science. Works in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Recruitment and with the directors of the Professional Programs Directors within in the Faculty of Applied Science to coordinate recruitment, both domestic and international, ensuring a coherent, synergistic and consistent approach to key markets in Asia, Europe, the Americas, Middle East and Africa. Work Performed 1. Develops, plans, implements and evaluates recruitment & marketing strategy and corresponding activities for the professional programs, including effective digital and traditional media marketing strategies. Identifies necessary deliverable (print materials, online resources, photography, video, presentations, etc.), and their associated timelines and costs. Prepares an annual recruitment plan for key regions and develops a budget with the necessary resources to support implementation. 2. Identifies partnership opportunities, cultivates and sustains relationships with Program Directors, other faculties, the Provost Office, Industry Advisory Boards, Sponsors, Professional & Industry Associations, Universities, and governments. Deploys, maintains and updates a CRM system to manage customer relationships. 3. Develops and plans new and independent marketing and communications projects and works together with the Director of Communications and Marketing to implement these successfully. Plans and produces, in coordination with the Director of Recruitment and
3 Marketing, an integrated and high-quality set of recruitment materials to a culturally-diverse international student audience. 4. Advises prospective students, industry groups, and others on program opportunities, admission requirements, prerequisites, English language proficiency requirements, tuition fees, housing, and Canadian study permit requirements. Exercises cross-cultural sensitivity and intercultural skills. Develops, compiles, documents, and applies in-depth knowledge and understanding of complex requirements and admissions policies, as well as knowledge of foreign professional credentials, international documentation and different countries' educational systems, in responding appropriately to inquiries. 5. Develops & delivers effective presentations to groups, large and small, and advises students, and institutional representatives on opportunities and requirements. 6. Conducts appropriate follow-up with contacts made with prospective students during these visits. Evaluates the outcomes of various recruiting activities, preparing reports for the Faculty leadership team and recommending changes where necessary. 7. Possesses a thorough knowledge of the Faculty's mission and mandate, admission requirements and program offerings, services and facilities, UBC brand and APSC Professional Programs to which students are applying. The Manager also has knowledge about other APSC programs that are relevant to his/her portfolio. 8. Responsible for developing an effective digital marketing strategy, including online advertising and social media strategies. Communicates key recruitment messages to traditional and new media. Monitors analytics of key websites to ensure recruitment objectives are met. Coordinates design/production of ads and management of leads generated through these efforts. 9. Manages the procurement, design, and inventory of display materials such as banners, tablecloths, laptops, projectors, and give-away promotional items 10. Monitors trends in key industries and makes recommendations to Program Directors 11. Participates in the planning and provision of pre-arrival, on-arrival and other transition support services for newly admitted students, including providing students with registration support and advising on course selection, housing, and other matters pertaining to their transition to UBC. 12. Recommends, where appropriate, changes to the Admission's Policy for specific professional programs within the Faculty. These changes include amending policies and entry requirements while ensuring consistency with UBC policies in this area. The Manager, Recruitment and Marketing, works with databases to find information on status of applications to the professional programs and use this information to advise prospective students. 13. Works with the Director, Marketing & Communications in the production of required marketing communications materials, and coordinating closely with the Marketing and
4 Communications team to ensure that appropriate messaging about Professional Programs is embedded and integrated into all existing key prospective student marketing communications channels. 14. Undertakes other recruitment, advising and program development activities as required, in keeping with the terms of the position. May represent the unit on cross-unit projects or on other University committees as assigned. 15. Adheres to university policies, particularly those governing Freedom of Information and Privacy Laws in Canada, and maintains confidentiality of knowledge and market intelligence as an employee of the University. 16. Carries out other duties or takes on other responsibilities in keeping with level of the position. Supervision Received Works independently towards broad general goals to fulfill the mandate of Applied Science. Reports to Associate Dean, Education and Professional Development. Incumbent is subject to annual performance reviews and is expected to provide an annual report for the Faculty's leadership team on recruitment results. Supervision Given Engages and supervises temporary staff and student assistants as required. Consequence of Error/Judgement The Manager, Recruitment & Marketing, Professional Programs provides strategic advice for recruitment and marketing of the Faculty's Professional Programs. The role is key to the Faculty's ability to meet enrolment targets, and contribute to the University's long term revenue goals derived from professional programs. This position is also critical to the healthy diversification of the Professional Programs' student body. An ineffective recruitment strategy, poor decisions or judgment, careless implementation of international recruitment operations, or inability to effectively manage and mentor a professional recruitment and marketing team, would result in the diminishment of UBC's international reputation, waste resources, lower morale and effectiveness of the team, and fail to meet the Faculty and ultimately the University's professional program enrolment goals. Lack of foresight, proper planning or poor market intelligence could result in lost opportunities for the Faculty, and place UBC at a disadvantage with its major competitors. The success of the Faculty's recruitment goals in key international regions relies on the Manager, Recruitment & Marketing's knowledge and expertise in the international education field, their ability to build collaborative networks and strategic partnerships, and their understanding of those regionally-specific cultural, political and economic conditions that may impact APSCI's successful marketing efforts in the regions.
5 Lack of knowledge of programs and UBC admission requirements on the part of the Manager, Recruitment & Marketing, could misinform students and others, with a resulting loss of confidence in UBC and its representatives, and would ultimately depress enrolments in the Faculty and damage UBC's international reputation. Failure to take proper measures and to establish protocols to address the risks inherent in travel and overseas activities by staff and students could impact their safety and security and leave the University vulnerable to unacceptable liability. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Preferably a professional degree in Engineering, Planning, Architecture, or health profession. Minimum of four years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Related experience in marketing or international recruitment in a post-secondary context, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive knowledge of digital recruiting and digital media marketing in an intercultural context. Demonstrated ability to develop an implementation plan to achieve objectives and goals and to assess achievement of same. Superior oral and written communication skills as well as superior public speaking abilities; proven ability to communicate cross-culturally and to adapt speaking styles to accommodate English as a Second Language speakers. Ability to work effectively with prospective students, industry, government representatives and members of Canada's consular missions abroad; proven ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment. Demonstrated commitment to principles of excellent customer service. Thorough knowledge and understanding of University policies and procedures. Proficient computer skills and knowledge of University's management information systems. Ability to travel internationally. Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
