1 Assessment Support Introduction This guide introduces the diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment resources in the Pearson Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 Common Core Edition. It explores both online and print assessment tools that help you monitor your students progress and determine their mastery of the concepts and skills that make up the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Start at the beginning, which in this guide means the beginning of the school year. Diagnostic Assessment Pearson High School Math offers diagnostic and screening tools that you can use at the start of the school year to determine whether your students have the prerequisite skills to be successful in the course. The Entry-Level Assessment appears at the beginning of the student edition and is also available on PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry. com. Use the results from this assessment to determine students strengths and weaknesses. If the results show that students have serious weaknesses, have them take the Screening Test. 1

2 Use the Screening Test to identify students proficiency in basic computation and problem solving. The Screening Test is available in the Progress Monitoring Assessments booklet. The results of the test measure students readiness for the course. Teachers can also use a report form to indicate proficiency of the assessed skills for each student. The Get Ready! diagnostic assessment appears on the first page of every chapter. Use the results to determine if students have the prerequisite skills for the chapter. The Teacher s Edition shows a list of resources for remediation in the margin. This assessment is also available on PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry.com. 2

3 Formative Assessment Pearson High School Math offers a variety of formative assessments that you can use throughout your instruction to gauge your students understanding of the material. The results of these assessments allow you to plan and adjust instruction to meet your students needs. The program provides ongoing formative assessment tools for you to use during your lesson and at check points throughout the chapter. Let s take a look at some of these key assessment features. Got It? During the Guided Instruction phase of every lesson, the Got It? examples provide a check for each concept. Students solve the Got It? problem independently and check their work. You can direct students who need additional support to use the Student Companion, which provides scaffolded support for the Got It? problems. You may also want to encourage students to solve the Got It? problems online as a way to self-assess. After answering the problem, students receive immediate feedback, which helps them reflect on their level of understanding. Lesson Quiz The Lesson Quiz is a more formal assessment of lesson skills and concepts. Students can take the quiz online, or you can use the print version located in the All-in-One Teaching Resources. When students complete the Lesson Quiz online, they receive immediate results. Appropriate intervention, practice, or enrichment is automatically generated based on student performance. This is a simple and effective way for you to differentiate instruction every day and personalize learning. 3

4 Standardized Test Practice Each lesson contains a set of Standardized Test Practice problems and each chapter provides a Cumulative Standards Review. These problems provide practice and preparation for Common Core assessments and end-of-year tests. An additional Standardized Test Prep page for each lesson is available in print and online and in the Teacher Resources. Pull It All Together The Pull It All Together feature provides a set of performance tasks that can serve as either a formative or summative assessment. These performance tasks provide students with an opportunity to become more proficient in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. As a formative assessment, the feature offers you insight into your students proficiency for solving complex, real-world problems. You may also decide to work through the performance tasks as a class so that students have the opportunity to articulate their thinking strategies as they develop solution plans to solve these tasks. 4

5 When used as a summative assessment, the Pull It All Together feature gives you an indication of your students abilities at solving these tasks. This enables you to track their progress through the year and to better help them prepare for the CCSS performance assessments. Performance Tasks Summative Assessment You can find additional performance tasks in the online All In One Teaching Resources for each chapter. These performance tasks help prepare students for the transition to the new Common Core assessments. Summative assessments in Pearson High School Math help you evaluate your students mastery of key mathematical skills and concepts. Leveled Quarter, Mid-Course, and Final Tests evaluate students mastery of skills at various points throughout the course. Form G assessments are designed to measure mastery of content with the rigor presented in the lessons and exercises. Form K assessments are designed for less-proficient readers, beginning English language learners (ELLs), and other struggling students. The End-of-Course Assessment provides practice for end-of-course exams. Use the results from this assessment to indicate a student s ability to succeed in subsequent high school math courses. The Endof-Course Assessment is available online in the Benchmark Test section. SAT and ACT Practice acquaints students with topics and question formats common to the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and American College Test (ACT) assessments. The purpose of this test practice is to help students prepare for these important tests. 5

6 Success Tracker One more assessment feature is Success Tracker, which is a powerful diagnostic, assessment, and remediation tool. Success Tracker allows your students to take all of their assessments online through PowerAlgebra.com and PowerGeometry.com. Each assessment correlates to the CCSS. All you need to do is go online, choose an assessment, and then assign it to your class. Each of your students will log in to his or her own SuccessNet account and take the assessment. Each student receives instant feedback and leveled assignments based on the standards not mastered. The assessments are scored automatically and the compiled data appears in three reports. The Test Scores report provides percentage scores for every student with color coding to help you quickly identify struggling students. The Mastery report tracks students mastery of specific Common Core content standards. The Item Analysis report provides data for every test item. With this report, you can quickly identify skills that may need reteaching.
