Begin by laying out the project using stakes and string line or garden hose (great for curves). Dig a trench 6" wide by 4" deep. 2. Smooth the bottom of the trench. Place 1" of paver base in the bottom of the trench and firmly compact. 3. Position edgers end to end in the trench. Using a rubber mallet, tamp the edgers firmly into place. Use a carpenter s level to ensure your project is level. 4. Edgers can be easily cut to fit your project by using a circular saw with a masonry blade or a hammer and chisel. Begin by laying out the project using stakes and string line. Add 6" to the perimeter of the finished patio. Mark and remove sod. Excavate area to a depth of 7". 2. Install paver base and thoroughly compact to a finished depth of 4". Use a landscaper s rake to remove any high spots, fill in low spots and compact. Repeat as necessary. 3. Lay two 1" diameter pipes parallel on base. Spread 1" of play sand over compacted base. Screed the play sand by dragging a 2" x 4" board over pipes. Remove pipes and fill voids with sand. 4. Lay patio stones in the desired pattern. If the pattern requires cutting, patio stones can be cut using a circular saw with a masonry blade. 5. Place edging around entire project 3" from edge of compacted aggregate. Install edging and spikes according to the manufacturer s instructions. 6. Fill joints by sweeping additional play sand over the patio. Remove remaining play sand from the top of the project. If using the Foot Notes patio stone, polymeric joint sand may be substituted for play sand to inhibit weed growth between stones. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw. 16 Planning Paver Projects 1. Select a shape for your paver project: A 12' E 4' Do it yourself Paver Installation D 8' B 8' RECTANGLE J 8' F 4' G 4' L-SHAPED H 4' 1. Remove Sod 1. Excavate the installation area to approximately 6" larger on all sides than the actual finished size. C 12' 2. Plan the dimensions of your finished project, accurate to one inch. 3. Calculate the area (total square feet) of your project. This will determine the total amount of pavers, base material, and play sand that you will need: Rectangle x = square feet A B Example: 12' x 8' = 96 square feet L-Shaped: ( x ) = ( x ) = + = square feet E F K H I L K L Example: (4' x 4' ) = 16' (4' x 8' ) = 32' 16' + 32' = 48 square feet 4. Compute the perimeter to determine edging and/or border quantity: Rectangle: = linear feet A B C D Example: 12' + 8' + 12' + 8' = 40 linear feet L-Shaped: = linear feet E F G H I J Example: 4' + 4' + 4' + 4' + 8' + 8' = 32 linear feet I 8' 2. Prepare and Compact Base 3. Screed Sand 4. Lay Pavers 2. Install paver base to a compacted finished thickness of 4-6" for patios and walkways and 8-12" for driveways. Paver base should be installed in 2" increments and thoroughly compacted. The final grade should slope away from the house, dropping 1 /4" per foot for drainage. 3. Lay two 1" diameter pipes parallel on base. Spread 1" of play sand over compacted base. Screed the play sand by dragging a 2" x 4" board over pipes. Remove pipes and fill voids with sand. 4. Lay pavers in the desired pattern. If the pattern requires cutting, the pavers can be cut with a circular saw using a masonry blade. 5. Select your Anchor TM paver product and pattern; then calculate the number of pavers needed using the dimensions provided. 6. Determine the amount of paver base material necessary. Minimum 4-6" deep for paths and patios, 8-12" for driveways Square feet of project x 0.09 (1" deep) = cubic feet of paver base. 7. Calculate the amount of play sand needed over the base and between joints. Square feet of project x 0.09 (1" deep) = cubic feet of sand (add approximately a half cubic foot per 100 square feet of pavers for joints). 8. Compute the required quantity of edge restraint & spikes. 9. Figure the total cost of your project (on the next page). 5. Install Edging 6. Compact/ Spread Sand 5. Install e dging and spikes around the entire project according to the manufacturer s instructions. Install paver edge 6" from edge of compacted aggregate. 6. Compact the installed pavers with a plate compactor in both directions with at least two passes. Once compacted, spread play sand on the pavers and sweep into joints. Compact again to ensure that all joints are completely full. Repeat as necessary. Sweep off remaining sand from pavers. 16 Substitute polymeric joint sand in place of play sand to inhibit weed growth between pavers. Read manufacturer instructions. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw. Snow and Ice Removal: To maintain the best surface integrity, use plastic blades on snow plow and raise blades on snow blower. Do not use sharp objects to chop ice as they can damage the surface.

18 Planning Wall Projects Choose your retaining wall block and color, then: 1. Estimate the number of courses of block in your finished wall including base course. 2. Determine number of blocks needed by multiplying the total number of blocks per course times the number of courses. Length of wall in inches X Height of wall in inches = Total square inches = Total square inches divided by 144 = square feet of wall Divide wall square feet: by 0.33 for Ashlarstone product = blocks. by 0.33 for Aspen Stone product = blocks. by 0.21 for Carlton product = blocks. by 0.74 for Diamond 10D product = blocks. by 0.33 for Fresco product = blocks. by 0.66 for Hampton Stone product = blocks. by 0.33 for Windsor Stone product = blocks. 3. Determine the total cubic feet of base material needed by multiplying the number of linear feet of wall times 0.4 cubic foot. This will give you a 4" deep base, 14" wide. Please refer to specific product information for recommended base depth. Total wall linear ft. x 0.4 cubic foot = total cubic ft. base material. Example: 10 linear feet of wall x 0.4 cubic foot = 4 cubic feet base material. (1 cubic foot = 120 lbs.) 4. Calculate the amount of drainage aggregate that you ll need behind the wall. Total linear ft. of wall x height x 1.0 cubic foot = total cubic feet of drainage aggregate. This will give you 12" of drainage aggregate behind the wall. Example: 10 ft. long x 2 ft. high x 1.0 = 20 cubic feet of drainage aggregate behind the wall. (1 cubic foot = 120 lbs.) Step 4: No need to remove rear lips or use as alignment in building wall. Eliminate Step 5. Fresco TM wall block can be used as a cap, if desired. Use exterior-grade concrete adhesive to secure each block in the top two rows. 18 Quantity calculations are rounded up to the next block. Product dimensions may vary or change without notice. The number of caps needed is based on straight walls, unless otherwise noted additional caps may be required for curved walls.
19 Installing Your Wall Project 1. Stake Out/Remove Sod 2. Add & Compact Gravel 3. Level Base 4. Lay and Level Blocks 5. Add Drainage Aggregate 6. Split/Cut Block 7. Mark & Cut Cap 8. Glue Cap Do it yourself Retaining Wall Installation For Fresco TM Wall System see page Begin by laying out the wall. Use stakes with a string line or a garden hose (excellent for curved walls) to mark the location of the back of the wall. Use the information below to determine the size of the trench needed, and then dig the trench. The width of the trench should be twice the depth (front to back) of the block. For block that is 4 inches deep make the trench 8 inches wide. For block that is 5.5 inches deep make the trench 11 inches wide. For block that is 6 inches deep make the trench 12 inches wide. For block that is 7 inches deep make the trench 14 inches wide. For block that is 12 inches deep make the trench 24 inches wide. Trench depth: Make the trench deep enough to bury a full block of the first course plus 6 inches of base material. Example: for 6-inch-high block, dig a trench 12 inches deep. If the property slopes, start the trench at the lowest point and step the trench up or down as necessary, making sure that at least half of the first course block will be buried. 2. Remove loose soil and firmly compact the soil in the bottom of the trench with the tamper. Add a layer of base material in the bottom of the trench; rake out and firmly compact. Base material can be paver base or an equivalent to 3 /4-inch minus (with fines) aggregate. Use the appropriate amount of base material for the height of the wall you are building. 3. Use a carpenter s level to level base material from front to back and side to side; check the level every few feet. Add more base material and repeat process as needed until appropriate base depth is achieved. The more level the base material, the easier it is to level the block when building the wall. 4. Use a hammer and chisel to remove the rear lips from all blocks for the first course. Position the individual blocks side by side on the prepared base so that front edges of the block are touching and the back edge aligns with the string line. Level block in both directions, adjusting with the rubber mallet if necessary. Begin next course by laying a block with the rear lip facing down, in a staggered relationship to the course beneath (running bond). Pull each block forward until the lip is securely in contact with the blocks below. Check each course for level before continuing and make adjustments with rubber mallet. Repeat the process until the desired wall height is reached. 5. Place filter fabric directly behind the wall extending from the bottom of the first course to the middle of the top course. Fill behind each course with drainage aggregate (such as 3 /4-inch free draining) that extends 12 inches behind the wall. Fill cores of blocks (if applicable). Compact aggregate with tamper. Organic soil or clay-type soil is not recommended for backfill material. 6. Cutting or splitting blocks may be required for your project. To split a block: Use a hammer and chisel to score the block on all sides. Pound the chisel on the score line until the block splits. To cut a block: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade. To cut a 90-degree mitered corner: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade. Cut a 45-degree angle on two blocks. Glue cut sides together with exterior grade concrete adhesive so the two faces form the finished outside corner. 7. To cap the wall, slide the cap forward so the face of the cap overhangs the face of the wall approximately 1 inch. For capping curves, trim the caps to follow the radius of the wall. Place a cap at the beginning of the curve, skip a space and place the next cap in the third position. Rest a cap on top of the original two, aligning the face with the adjacent caps. Mark the bottom of the cap along the edges (as shown in illustration 7). Use a circular saw with a masonry blade to cut the marked cap. On a 90-degree corner, two caps need to be saw-cut to achieve a 45-degree mitered corner. At the end of the wall, cut the cap so the manufactured edge is exposed and the cut edge is against the next cap. 8. Use an exterior-grade concrete construction adhesive to secure the caps. Always wear eye protection when splitting blocks. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw.
