1 Show Me the Way Bible Story: Show Me the Way (model prayer) Luke 11:1-4 Bottom Line: Practice praying to God. Memory Verse: Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. 1 Timothy 4:8a, NIrV Life App: Commitment making a plan and putting it into practice. Basic Truth: I need to make the wise choice. Plug In: Focus the Energy (Small Groups, minutes) Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. If praying aloud makes you nervous, ask God to give you courage to pray aloud for your group as you model today s Bottom Line. Ask God to speak to the kids as they listen to today s story and do today s activities. Ask Him to help the kids figure out the best times and the best ways for them to start making prayer a priority in their lives. 1. Early Arriver Idea What You Need: Offering container Collect the offering from kids as they arrive. Ask them some questions to get them thinking about the topic of the lesson. When someone calls you on the phone, most of the time it shows you the number and who it is. What would you do if you saw that a policeman was calling you? Would you talk to him? What about your teacher? your parent? your best friend? the President? [Make It Personal] (Talk about a time you got a call from someone important: a boss, the pastor, an in-law, a relative, etc.) These people are pretty important. When these people call you, you assume they have something important to tell you or they can help you. Because of this, you spend time talking to them. But did you know that someone more important than any of these people wants to talk to you? God wants to talk to you! He wants you to call and talk to Him not on the phone but through prayer! 2. Silly Parts Of Speech we will have copies for you What You Need: Parts of Speech Word List Activity Pages Set out the stacks of words facedown. Remind the kids of the parts of speech that they are learning in school: nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, and prepositions. Tell them which piles are which parts of speech. Have them turn over two nouns and one word from each of the other stacks of words

2 and try to work together to make a sentence. It is okay if the sentences are silly, random, and don t quite make sense. Let the kids enjoy making silly sentences with the parts of speech until it is time to wrap up. Just like we study the parts of speech to help us learn to better communicate with people using our language, we can study the parts of prayer to help us learn to better communicate with God through prayer. Learning to pray can seem hard and intimidating, but Jesus tried to make it as simple as possible for His disciples and for us by giving us an example of prayer with parts that we can study. [Transition] Let s go to Large Group and find out more about how Jesus helped His disciples learn to talk to God. Lead your group to the Large Group area. Catch On: Make the Connection (Small Groups, minutes) Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. 1. Can You Pray? (application activity / great for active learners) What You Need: Plastic cups, sections of kite string, a paper clip, a printout of 5-10 tongue twisters Help the kids build and test cup and string phones. Use the paper clip to poke a tiny hole in the center of the bottom of each cup. Thread the kite string through the holes and tie a large knot so that the end won t slip out of the cup. (You may want to make a sample phone while the kids watch, and then let them work together to make their own.) When the string is pulled taut between the cups, a child can speak into one cup and the sound will travel through the string to the other cup where the partner can hear the message. Practice saying a few tongue twisters through the phones to each other. See who can get the best connection and communicate the best. The phones we made have to be connected to each other by a string that is pulled tight to work. If we don t keep the connection tight, we can t talk through the phone. With prayer, [Apply] the more we talk to God, the tighter and better our connection becomes! By praying more, we get used to talking to God and we get better at understanding how to pray. When we talk to God regularly, our connection to God becomes stronger and stronger. When we don t talk to God regularly, our connection grows weaker. God is always there for us, but we are missing out when we don t connect to Him through prayer. [Impress] Practice praying to God. 2. Pin Your Prayers (application activity / review the Bible story) we will have all of these supplies for you What You Need: Bible, one clothespin per student, permanent markers, Bible Story Cards Activity Pages, copies of the Lord s Prayer per student

3 Read the Bible story from Luke 11:1-4. Have the children put the Bible Story Pictures in the correct order and review what happened in the story. Once the pictures are in order, turn them over and the P.R.A.Y. letters and explanations will be in the correct order also. Have the kids write the letters from the acrostic P.R.A.Y. vertically onto their clothespins. As they do this, explain the acrostic. P = Praise: We tell God how awesome He is and thank Him for what He has done. R = Redo: We ask forgiveness and for a redo for our mistakes. In return, we promise to give forgiveness and offer redos to others as well. A = Ask: We ask God for things we need and ask God to help others with what they need. Y = Yield: We give up our way and our wants for God s way instead. We ask God for His plans to take place, not our plans. (Note: Talk about yield signs on roadways and how that compares to yielding to God.) In our Bible story, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. He gave them a model prayer that can help us pray, too. This acrostic we have made has all the parts of the prayer Jesus taught His disciples. [Apply] You can stand the clothespins up on your dresser or bathroom counter at home. Put them up so they spell pray and can remind you of the parts of prayer and help you to remember to pray often. You don t have to pray with all four of these parts every single time and you don t have to use any special, fancy words when you pray. Just talk to God like you would a friend. These pins can remind you of Jesus model prayer and of important things to talk about when you pray. Use your pin as a guide to help you become more comfortable praying to God each day. You could even write down your prayers in a notebook and clip the prayer in the clothespn; that way you can remember your prayers and the parts of prayer! [Impress] Practice praying to God. Give each student a copy of the Lord s Prayer to clip into the clothespin and show them how to use PRAY on the back. 3. Memory Verse Scramble (memory verse activity / possible large-group activity) we will have copies for you What You Need: 2 sets of Memory Verse Word Cards Activity Page Help the kids look up the verse and read it together. Scramble up each set of the Memory Verse Word Cards in a random order. Place the sets face up, about 5 feet away from each other. Divide the kids into two teams and have the teams line up a short distance away from the scrambled words. They will race to put the words in order. The first team member will run down and grab what he or she thinks is the first word, then run it back and put it down. The second person will grab the second word, and so on, until all the words are grabbed and placed in the order they were picked up. If the order is not correct, one person can change one word (or switch the order of two words). If the order is still not correct, another person can change another two words. Only one person can adjust the verse at a time. Continue until one team has the verse correct.

4 Good job! That was a mad scramble to put our verse in the correct order. [Apply] Remember that as we do something over and over, we get better and better at it. That includes spiritual things like reading our Bibles or what we re learning about this week praying! The more you pray, the easier it will become for you, and you will get to know God better and better! [Impress] Practice praying to God. Pray and Dismiss What You Need: Bibles Have everyone look up Luke 11:1-4. Tell the kids that sometimes, when they don t know what to pray, they can read this prayer as their prayer. Pray the Lord s Prayer out loud as a group. We are learning that we need to [Impress] practice praying to God. Jesus gave us this prayer in Luke 11 as a model. That means that we don t have to say it word for word but sometimes, [Apply] when you don t know what else to say, you can read this prayer and make it your prayer to God. Let s pray together by reading this prayer out loud as a group. (Read the Lord s Prayer aloud from the Bible with the kids.) Give each child a GodTime card. FOR LEADERS ONLY GOD VIEW: the connection between COMMITMENT and God s character, as shown through God s One Big Story Have you never had to endure a child learning how to play the clarinet? It s pretty awful. Sounds more like a person strangling a duck then anything close to actual music. But that goes with any musical instrument, doesn t it? To become great at playing an instrument, you need to practice to rehearse. You need to commit to sticking with it even when you don t feel like it. This is true for faith. To grow to mature takes practice. It takes commitment. Which is why we re taking a whole month to discover how commitment can show up in our lives as we practice our faith. Commitment is making a plan and putting it into practice. If we want to know God better, we need to practice our faith. But this isn t something that comes naturally to any of us. That s why we need a plan to put into practice. And the best place to start is with faith skills. Every so often we like to come back around and focus on four faith skills that kids can practice to help them grow in their faith and know God better. We use four words to help us remember these skills: HEAR. PRAY. TALK. LIVE.

5 Each week this month, we ll focus on one of the faith skills as we talk about making a plan and putting it into practice. This month, let s think about how: (1) God created commitment and exemplifies it in being committed to us. (2) Commitment is both a reflection of and a response to God s character. We can demonstrate His commitment to us as we commit to knowing Him more. (3) Commitment is how we follow through on the tasks set before us. This week, we re discovering: Pray. We hope kids understand that praying is an important part of growing in their faith. They can pray knowing that God knows them and wants to hear from them. They can pray with gratitude and honesty; they can pray for their needs and for forgiveness. They can pray anytime, anywhere, because God is always listening. That s why we ll look more closely at Luke 11:1-4 and the way Jesus taught His followers how to pray in the Lord s Prayer. Our Bottom Line is: Practice praying to God. We hope kids will come to believe that they can share anything with God. There s nothing too big or too small for Him to handle. Our Memory Verse is 1 Timothy 4:8a, Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. (NIrV) When we commit to practicing our faith and follow through on our plan, we ll grow in such a big way that it will impact our entire lives.
