3 4 Oldham Recycling News Oldham Recycling News 5 GET IN LINE! Residents will soon be able to purchase compostable liners, which allow them to recycle their food waste using green food caddies, at a discounted price. The liners will be available for just 3p each and can be purchased from local shops. The liners can be used as an alternative to carrier bags to take home goods as well as being used to recycle food waste. ANY QUESTIONS? How will this project work? COMING SOON: Residents will soon be able to buy food waste liners from local shops for 3p Oldham Council wants to trial a project which will replace plastic bags within your local community. The Council wishes to introduce a new compostable liner which can be used by residents to take home their shopping before being used to recycle their food waste. Why use compostable bags instead of plastic bags? In the UK last year we used 4 billion plastic bags. The majority of these bags will be used once and then disposed of into landfill where they take up to 200 years to rot away. A compostable bag can be used for the same purpose but has a second life to be used within a resident s home to recycle food waste. Why can t people use plastic bags in their food collection service? Oldham Council takes all the food waste it collects to a facility where it is turned into compost within 6 weeks. Plastic bags do not rot down quick enough within the process and actually make it harder to recycle the food into compost. Plastic bags are therefore considered as contamination. Very soon we will not be able to collect any food that is put out by residents in plastic bags. WE RE HAPPY TO HELP! We would like to say a HUGE thank you to all of the local businesses and organisations that are supporting our campaign! Local businesses and organisations in the area are assisting with our campaign in many ways and we d like to send out a big thank you! When you visit the local shops that are helping us out, you will see many different recycling messages and will be provided with recycling information. Shopkeepers and staff have been trained to answer any quick queries, but if you have any suggestions, requests, complaints or questions, look out for our feedback boxes on counters and in entrances, and pop a note inside, leave your details, and an officer will get back to you. GOT SOME TIME TO SPARE? We still need more help spreading the word of recycling! Do you have a little spare time to help us? Even if it s a quick 10 minute chat to your neighbours about recycling or helping someone put their bins out it still counts!
