Bible Study Lesson Luke Chapter 1 Subject: The Events Surrounding Jesus' Birth Objective: To cause individuals to desire to know Jesus better and to serve Him. Introduction: If I asked you what was the greatest event you ever wittnesed what would it be? For me it probably would be the first launch of the Space Shuttle. Perhaps some of you would say a particular sporting event or some natural disaster. If we were to list the top three events in world history what would they be? Christmas has to be one of them. It seems appropriate to have these Christmas lessons now. Yet to start this book we must address this great event in earth's history. Lesson Outline: I Introduction to Luke's Gospel (1:1-4) Luke 1:1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, Luke 1:2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Luke 1:3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, Luke 1:4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. (v1-4) Luke tells why he has written this book and why he was qualified to write it. Principles: 1) We are to know for certain God's word and its logic and order. 2) If we carefully investigate God s word as Luke did, we will see amazing and life changing truths. Applications: 1) Are you certain of your salvation, forgiveness, who Jesus is? 2) Are you studying and probing into God s truths as Luke did?

II John and Jesus Birth Foretold (1:5-38) Luke 1:5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Luke 1:6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. Luke 1:7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. Luke 1:8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, Luke 1:9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. Luke 1:10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. Luke 1:11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. Luke 1:12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. (v5-13) An angel appears to Zechariah while serving as priest, prophesying the birth of a son, John. Luke 1:14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, Luke 1:15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 2

Luke 1:16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. Luke 1:17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (v14-17) The angel prophesies regarding John's greatness and gives John's father rules for his upbringing: It says specically what he will do. Be a joy and delight Bring rejoicing Be great in the sight of the Lord Filled with the Holy Spirit Many will be brought back to the Lord Hearts will be turned People will be made ready for the Lord Luke 1:18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." Luke 1:19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. Luke 1:20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." Luke 1:21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. Luke 1:22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. Luke 1:23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. Luke 1:24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 3

Luke 1:25 "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people." (18-26) Zachariah doubts and is struck dumb until his son is born. Luke 1:26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, Luke 1:27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. Luke 1:28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Luke 1:29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. (v26-29) The angel Gabriel tells Mary she has found favor with God, but she is afraid. Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. Luke 1:31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, Luke 1:33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." (v30-33) Gabriel announces she will give birth to the Son of God and He will reign over an endless kingdom. Luke 1:34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" Luke 1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the 4

holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (v34-35) Mary questions this since she is a virgin but Gabriel tells her the Holy Spirit will conceive her son. Luke 1:36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:38 "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. (v36-39) Gabriel explains nothing is impossible with God, even Elizabeth is pregnant. Principles: 1) We should all strive for our family to be as Zechariah's was (v6) "Upright before the Lord". 2) Doubting God's word is risky business. Zechariah was struck dumb so he could talk less and listen more! 3) Jesus is Lord forever Jesus power and rule are foretold by Gabriel: He will be great He will receive the throne of David He will reign over the house of Jacob forever His kingdom or rule will never end 4) God is in the business of taking nothing and making it something 5) With God, nothing is impossible. 6) The Virgin birth is a necessary and vital principle regarding our salvation. Because: God needed someone spiritually alive to die spiritually for our sins. Every man born of Adam is born spiritually dead. Jesus had to be born spiritually alive thus He had to have one earthly parent and one Heavenly. 5

The real sacrifice was His spiritual death which occured on the cross right before His physical death. He cried "Father, Father, why have you forsaken me", when this occured. If Jesus had not been born of God and Mary He would not qualify as the perfect sacrifice. Applications: 1) Is your family upright with God? Why? 2) Is there anything God has said to you that you doubt? What is it? 3) Who is really Lord of your life? 4) What is God making out of your nothingness? 5) Why do you believe in the virgin birth? 6) Why was Zechariah struck dumb when he doubted and Mary was not? Ans Zechariah doubted that Gods word was true. Mary did not understand how it could happen and asked? Conclusion: it is ok to not understand God s word and ask Him what He means, it is not ok to doubt it or in essence say I won t believe it until I can understand it! III Mary Visits Elizabeth and Praises God (1:39-56) Luke 1:39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, Luke 1:40 where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. Luke 1:41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! Luke 1:43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 6

Luke 1:44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. (v40-44) Mary arrives at Elizabeth's home where her baby jumps at the sound of Mary's voice. Luke 1:45 Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!" Luke 1:46 And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord Luke 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, Luke 1:48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, Luke 1:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name. (v45-49) Mary praises God for His blessings on her. Luke 1:50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. Luke 1:51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. Luke 1:52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. Luke 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. (v50-53) Mary praises God for His mighty deeds. Luke 1:54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful Luke 1:55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers." Luke 1:56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. (v54-56) Mary praises God for helping Israel and herself. 7

Principles: 1) The power of Jesus is beyond our perception and touches all in His presence. 2) God is worthy of all praise and honor because (v50-55) a) His mercy extends to those who fear Him in all generations b) He has performed mighty deeds c) He has scattered those who are proud in their innermost thoughts. d) He has brought down the proud and lifted up the humble e) He has filled the hungry with good things f) He has helped Israel remembering to be merciful 3) God remembers to be merciful to us. Applications: 1) Have you felt the power of Jesus? In what way? 2) What do you praise God for daily? 3) In what way has God shown His mercy to you? IV John the Baptist is born among awe, praise & prophecy (v57-80) Luke 1:57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Luke 1:58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. Luke 1:59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, Luke 1:60 but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John." (v57-60) Elizabeth gives birth to a son and says he is to be named John. Luke 1:61 They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that name." Luke 1:62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. Luke 1:63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, 8

"His name is John." Luke 1:64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. (v61-64) When the neighbors protest, Zechariah writes John and immediately his mouth was opened and he began to speak. When you obey God he blesses you and you praise Him. Luke 1:65 The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. Luke 1:66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, "What then is this child going to be?" For the Lord's hand was with him. (v65-66) Everyone was in awe and knew God's hand was with this child. Luke 1:67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: Luke 1:68 "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. Luke 1:69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David Luke 1:70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), Luke 1:71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us-- Luke 1:72 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, Luke 1:73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: Luke 1:74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear Luke 1:75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 9

(v67-75) Zechariah prophesys regarding God's salvation of His people through His Son. Luke 1:76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, Luke 1:77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, Luke 1:78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven Luke 1:79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." Luke 1:80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel. (v76-80) Zechariah prophesies regarding his son, John who will go before the Lord and prepare the way. Principles: 1) God had a specific plan for John's life and all who his life touched 2) God is to be praised because: a) He has come and redeemed His people (v68) b) He has brought salvation from their enemies (v71). c) He remembers His holy covenant v(72) d) He has enabled us to worship and serve Him without fear (v73). e) He shows us mercy. Applications: 1) What is God's plan for your life? 2) Why do you praise God? 3) In what way has God shown His mercy to you? 4) How do you worship God? 10

Conclusion: God can and will miraculously intervene in someones life whom He desires to use it in a special way. The requirement is someone who is upright before Him and willing to submit to Him. The proof that He made the right choice is the resulting praise for Him as He fulfills His purpose in us. God wants and plans to intervene in your life if you are willing. Has God intervened in your life lately? Have you praised Him for who He is and for choosing you? 11
