1 SEP 723: PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORT INJURY Fall 2011 INSTRUCTOR: Damien Clement, Ph.D. ATC OFFICE: 269 Coliseum PHONE: OFFICE HOURS: Monday: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday: 1-3 p.m. Thursday: a.m. All other times by appointment CLASS TIME/LOCATION: Monday/Wednesday: 10-11:15 am / Coliseum, Room 252 COURSE DESCRIPTION SEP 723 will explore the theory and research related to the psychological aspects of injury and injury rehabilitation. The focus is on theory and application. Intake interviews and case studies will be used to explore assessment and intervention approaches relevant for different levels of sport medicine and sport psychology professionals. Fitness Information Technologies: Morgantown, WV. ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION: Regular class attendance is highly recommended for successful completion of the course. As such, class participation will account for 10% of your final grade. Students are expected to have readings and assignments completed prior to attending class. I really appreciate and enjoy the experiences you have working with athletes and I hope you will share some of your expertise with the rest of the class. 2 BONUS Pop quizzes will be provided at the beginning of some classes for bonus points. These quizzes will based exclusively on the readings for class. ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSIONS: All assignments must be submitted in-class. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. 2

3 ACADEMIC APPEAL PROCESS: Students are informed of the appeal process for dealing with academic behavior or grade appeals. Students should first attempt to resolve all academic behavior/grade appeals with the faculty member teaching the course as early as possible. If a reasonable resolution cannot be reached at this time, the student should write a letter of appeal to the Chair of the Department within which the course was taught. If a reasonable resolution is not reached from this level of appeal, further written appeals should be addressed first to the Associate Dean and then Dean of the College. 4 Written Assignment Descriptions RESEARCH STUDY CRITIQUE The purpose of this assignment is for students to begin to explore the research literature related to the psychology of injury. Why prescribe psychological therapy or modalities if there is no evidence of its effectiveness? Your assignment is to locate a research study (preferable experimental in design) that either supports or disputes the hypothesized link between psychological factors (social support, mental skills, relaxation, coping skills, etc.) and the physical recovery from rehabilitation. This study cannot be one of the articles listed in your syllabus. There are dozens of these articles available in both sport psychology and athletic training journals. After locating your article, write a brief summary of the article (intro, methods, participants, results, discussion) and critique the findings. At the end, summarize key points for both sports medicine and sport psychology professionals. Attach a hard copy of the article to your assignment. Research critiques should be 2-3 pages and are due November 14 th INJURY MANUAL Each manual should provide theory and background information as well as practical suggestions and activities related to the topic. The manual should be based in psychological theory while adding the author s own insights and approach to the topic. Thus, the front end of the manual will most likely have an introduction/overview of the topic including a summary of what we know from research studies. The manual can then go in a number of directions depending on the topic but should include stages or steps of recovery and important processes for each step. Additionally, it would be most effective to include specific exercises or worksheets that your target audience can benefit from (coaches, athletes, or ATs). The final manual should be pages in length (not including references). APA or AMA format should be followed for reference citations. Be sure to cite your sources! Manuals will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Quality of content and depth of resources 25 points Organization and presentation of material 5 points IMPORTANT INJURY MANUAL DUE DATES o Topics must be approved by the instructor by September 28 th o Full Outlines due October 17 th o Final Projects due December 12 th by 12 noon o See last page of syllabus for a sample list of possible topics EXAMS Students will complete two exams based on the materials from the class discussion and readings. Each exam will consist of multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions selected from each unit previously covered with emphasis on assigned readings and lecture notes. The first exam is TAKE HOME and the second is IN- CLASS. 4
