3 Energy Policy Further Targets Targets for the Energiewende All nuclear power plants will be shut down until 2022 CO 2 emissions decrease by 40% until 2020 (current approx. -25%) Primary energy consumption will decrease by 20% until 2020 Energy efficiency/productivity increases by 2.1% per year Decrease of electricity consumption by 10% until 2020 Focus on system integration of renewable energy sources Grid expansion plan proposed and annually adapted 10 GW additional thermal power plants until 2020 Current status after German Elections, September 22nd, 2013: CDU+CSU 41.5 %; SPD 25.7%; Green Party 8.4%; Left Party Linke 8.6% Top points on the political agenda: Further organization of Energiewende and rising costs of energy for consumers due to Renewables Energies Act (EEG) 3

4 Growth of Renewables until 2020 There is no masterplan (yet) on how the energy transformation will be shared between different renewable (and conventional) energy sources. REH expectations for renewable energy: Quantity control will come for the growth corridor of 40-45% (2025) Main growth will be delivered by onshore wind (consistently stable at approx MW per year in ) - pull forward effects end of 2013 of GW Offshore wind will be important for grid stability Blade diameter > 150 m and standard 5-6 MW Turbine > 5,500 full loud hours (high capacity factor) prolonged FIT-regime: maximum installed capacity ~6-7 GW possible 2020 Photovoltaic: FIT tariff will be cut at 52 GW (today 35 GW), unclear afterwards Biomass: focus on replacing food crop with agricultural wastes and as back-up More focus on grid integration, storage capacities and R&D 4
