She has expertise in tobacco industry marketing, advertising, and merchandising. Participants will: Understand how priority populations (i.e. first year students, Greek members, athletes, etc.) are impacted by tobacco. Learn how tobacco companies recruit employees on college campuses and career fairs. Review how Big Tobacco targets college-aged students where they live and work. Understand the impact of tobacco industry retail contracts on the placement, presence, price, and promotion of tobacco at retail and near college campuses. Receive a brief overview of tobacco control laws and the importance of monitoring compliance. Receive tips on how to address tobacco marketing on campus and at retail locations. Thank you to Riverstone Health for sponsoring our Key Note Speaker Page 1
Saturday, October 17th :00-8:00am: Breakfast & Exhibitor Hall Opening College of Education Lobby Thank you to MedPass Health for sponsoring breakfast. 8:00-9:15am: Breakout Sessions Suicide Prevention and the Future In the next few years we will be testing for early biomarkers and teaching resiliency skills as much as ten years before a potential suicide attempt. As current residents of the state with the highest suicide rate in the nation, Montana college students can t afford not to be cutting edge. Learn how to engage students in blazing new trails in suicide prevention in the future. Its Crunch Time, Healthy Snacking The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the Nutrition Presentation, It s Crunch Time!, that the Health Center at Auraria s Student Health Education and Outreach Team created. The presentation will cover the goals and marketing of It s Crunch Time and the nutrition presentation itself. Engaging Students in Tobacco Prevention, Advocacy, and Cessation Participants in this session will learn new ways to excite students about tobacco control issues and increase their participation in policy advocacy and promoting cessation. Participants will also learn about environmental, social justice, and international issues related to tobacco. Finally, participants will learn how to implement programs that utilize this knowledge for increasing student interest and participation. How You THINK Is As Important As What You KNOW As leaders, we are consistently asked to juggle demanding priorities, provide leadership for our teams and departments, and focus on our own well-being. The latest research in neuroscience and mindset have opened the doors to examine how our THINKING is a key tool in shaping our role as a leader. This session is aimed at providing personal and professional development for leaders. Round Table Discussion, Faculty & Staff Outreach Attend a facilitated discussion about how to better partner with faculty and staff outside the Health Promotion and Health Services departments. Page 2
9:30-10:45: Breakout Sessions Recognizing and Managing Compassion Fatigue What is Compassion Fatigue? How do I know if I have it? What do I do about it if I do? Workrelated trauma can put people in helping professions at risk of developing the secondary trauma stress syndrome known as Compassion Fatigue. Learn how Compassion Fatigue can manifest in your life both in and outside of work and how you can develop sustainable tools to heal yourself and stay healthy while continuing to provide compassionate care to others. From Adolescence to Adulthood: The Role and Responsibility of the Modern Day University College and university officials have a unique opportunity (and responsibility) to facilitate student development as our traditional-aged students transition from late adolescence into early adulthood. Our work in supporting students through this process is guided by relevant student development theory, along with a variety of legal issues and case law. This session will review many of these issues, along with discussing the characteristics of this generation of college students. Round Table Discussion, Integration of Health Promotion Across Campus Attend a facilitated discussion about how to integrate health promotion into medical, counseling and other departments on campus. 11:00-12:15pm: Breakout Sessions Weigh To Go Weigh To Go UM is an 8 week lifestyle change program designed to empower students with knowledge, skills, and resources to improve their quality of life. The program includes weekly individual wellness coaching sessions, weekly group workshops, and weekly workouts at campus recreation. With help from Optimal Bear peer health coaches, support from other participants, and great prize incentives, Weigh To Go UM fosters a positive and motivating environment in which participants can thrive. **Pre and Post Data will be shared We re Tobacco Free, Now What? Now that your college campus is tobacco free, finding ways to keep your campus community educated on the policy and involved in your task force can be challenging. Using tools such as signage, events, and programs are just a few things that can help reinforce and educate your campus community about being tobacco free. Learn what the University of Montana and the University of Montana Western are doing on their campuses that have helped sustain their Tobacco Free Policy. Page 3
Sleep Deprivation Sleep deprivation is an ongoing and increasingly growing concern among young adults. Healthypeople.gov states that 25 percent of U.S. adults reporting insufficient sleep at least 15 out of every 30 days. Over the past 10 years colleges around the country are seeing sleep issues consistently in the top five concerns of students. This important topic will address questions and practical approaches to helping this age group. Nurturing Resilience Across Campus Culture Learn about the process of resilience and the factors that foster it across the human lifespan. Engage in discussion and activities that apply knowledge of resilience to participants own professional settings. Round Table Discussion, Budget Strategies Attend a facilitated discussion about strategies that departments have utilized during budget cutbacks, declining enrollment, and other situations. 12:15-1:45pm: Lunch & Rocky Mountain Affiliate Meeting Thank you to Medicat for sponsoring Lunch. 1:45pm: Exhibitor Hall Closes 1:45-3:00pm: Breakout Sessions Rams Take Care, Rams Take Action: Bystander Education at Colorado State University Rams Take Care, Rams Take Action is an interactive session that addresses drinking and bystander behavior during new student orientation. It is the product of an ongoing multi-department collaboration with four specific goals: 1) to debunk myths about college drinking; 2) to promote safer drinking habits; 3) to motivate students to intervene in an alcohol-related emergency; and 4) to provide the skills to help in an emergency. Evaluation design and results will be highlighted. Light Up Your Life in a New Way, Smoking Cessation Resources In the Spring of 2014, the Health Center at Auraria launched a comprehensive tobacco cessation program including a personalized quit plan and tobacco cessation medication. This presentation will cover the creation, marketing, sustainability and trends of the tobacco cessation program. After the presentation, attendees should be able to: Page 4
List training needed to support a patient with tobacco cessation Identify marketing strategies to establish a tobacco cessation program Understand trends in tobacco cessation as it relates to college campuses Beyond Alcohol Edu & Haven Alcohol EDU for College appears to have beneficial short-term effects on victimization and the most common types of alcohol-related problems among freshman. We know that Universities can benefit by implementing this online course along with environmental prevention strategies, especially during the first 6 weeks of the semester ( high risk time period). But what comes next? Join us for a discussion on how to carry these benefits past the first semester of freshman year and hear about an exciting new possibility happening at MSU Bozeman. Round Table Discussion, Strategies for Addressing No shows, Late appointments and Follow-up Care Attend a facilitated discussion about how campuses address no-shows and late appointments. Also learn strategies for scheduling and encouraging follow-up care. 3:15-3:30pm: Closing & Conference Wrap-up Thank you to our Sponsors!
