1 How to use the passport reader and how to interpret the results ALL passports can be checked in the passport reader. You can also check VISA-stickers and other documents in the machine, to get a closer look at how they react in IR and in UV-light. 1) Open the software on the computer. The first option you get is Scheme. If you don t see this screen when you start the machine, click Schemes in the upper left corner. 2) Choose RF and Images Scheme 3) Insert the passport. You will now get these boxes on your screen. Visible Image box OCR box (Optically Character Recognition) MRZ box (Machine Readable Zone) IR Image box (Infrared image) e-passport box UV Image box (Ultraviolet image) 1

4) Interpret the results: OCR The passport scanner reads the Machine Readable Zone of the passport. It sorts the information, which is what you see in this box.

To check this you should compare the information in the OCR box to the visible image box. - The information in the OCR box and the Visible Image box do not correspond.

By looking at this box you can tell whether the information written in the MRZ corresponds with the rest of the bio data page. To check this you should compare the information in the OCR box to the visible image box. - The information in the OCR box and the Visible Image box do not correspond. This is a STRONG indication that the passport is forged. - Unknown document; even though there is an MRZ. This needs further investigation, the document could be a forgery. NB: if the passport does not contain an MRZ it should say unknown document even though it is a genuine passport. E-Passport This image contains the information found in the chip. All passports containing a chip will have this symbol. If the document does not contain a chip, this field will be blank. The facial image of the bearer you see here should match the image found in the OCR/Visible Image and the person in front of you. - The facial image does not match the person in front of you and/or the facial image in the passport. - The passport is marked with the chip sign but the passport reader cannot detect the chip. The person may have intentionally destroyed it. 2

Visible Image The Visible Image is simply just a photo of the bio data page in the passport, i.e. the same image you can see with your own eyes. You can enlarge this image by double clicking it.

IR Image This image captures the bio data page s reaction in the infrared region of light. Everything printed at the same time with the same printer should have equal reaction in IR. This means that all characters in one individual word and number should have that same reaction in IR. The MRZ should always be visible on this image. Indications - of forgeries: - Name, surname, date of issue, date of birth etc. reacts differently in infrared. - Individual characters in one word or number disappear while others do not. - The MRZ disappears in infrared. UV Image This image captures the bio data page s reaction when illuminated by ultra violet light. The most important with this image is to make sure the paper is UV-dull, i.e. the paper itself should not have a bright light blue reaction under UV-lamp. Check that the UV-feature on the document is correct. Look for signs of lifting the laminate or small alterations of the document. - The paper has a bright reaction under UV. - Small areas shine brighter than the rest of the page, and are not a part of the UV-design. - The UV-design is not the proper one. If you have problems getting a good image in UV, try to cover the passport scanner with a jacket when you scan the document to block outside light. Security UV+IR You should check the document more closely, it might be forged. If the passport or document does not have an MRZ it will also say fail by default, even though the passport is genuine. This simply means that the MRZ is visible in IR. The passport still may be forged, and you need to do a manual check of the images taken by the passport reader. Checksum Fail means that the check digits are wrong. A blank space means that the check digits could not be calculated. The document could be a forgery. This simply means that the MRZ has correct check digits. The document could still be forged. You need to do a manual check of the images taken by the passport reader. 3

4 Examples of forgeries: OCR: Unknown document even though there is a MRZ-code in the passport. IR Image: The MRZ disappears. UV Image: Some areas are bright blue - and are not a part of the UV design. Security UV+IR: Fail (due to the MRZ disappearing in IR). e-passport: This is left blank, which is ok because the passport does not contain a chip. OCR: Unknown document even though the passport has an MRZ. Visible Image: The MRZ has the wrong font. UV Image: Ok. The photograph of the holder is supposed to be bright when exposed to UV. Security UV+IR: Ok Checksum: Blank even though there is an MRZ. 4

5 OCR: You can see the wrong check digits marked red. Visible Image: Looks ok from a distance, but if you double click to see closer you can see abnormalities. UV Image: Too bright. Security UV+IR: Ok. Checksum: Fail due to the check digits marked in red in the OCR-image. OCR: Not applicable. e-passport: Not applicable. Visible Image: Double click to get a closer look at detailes. UV Image: It is bright but like almost all security documents it should be dull (dark.) This indicates that the document may be a forgery. Security UV+IR: Fail. This will fail because there are not an MRZ in the document. 5
