1 Audi R8 Coupe ECU Removal & Installation Left and Right Engine Compartment Trim Removing Note The illustration shows the left engine compartment trim. Remove the engine compartment lamp, if equipped. Refer to Loosen the quick-release fasteners - arrows-. Remove the cap from the power steering fluid reservoir. Disconnect the bottom of the rear lid gasfilled strut -2-. Note While disengaging the engine compartment lid gas-filled strut -3- at the lower joint, a second technician must hold the lid securely. To do that, raise the retaining spring -2- with a small screwdriver -1--arrow- and remove the gas-filled strut from the ball stud. Raise the back of the engine compartment trim -1- and guide the front of it out at the lid hinge. Press the gas-filled strut onto the ball stud. Installing Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following: Insert the washers flush in the spring

2 nuts. The engine compartment trim must be seated correctly on the side panel or the quick-release bolts cannot lock.

3 Engine Control Module -J623- Special tools and workshop equipment required Hot Air Blower -VAS 1978/14A--item 1- with the Shrink Element for Hot Air Blower -VAS 1978/15A--2 - from the Wiring Harness Repair Set -VAS 1978B- Small commercially available locking pliers - 3- (vise grips) NOTE The Engine Control Module (ECM) -1- has a protective housing -2 and 5-. To make removing the shear bolts -4- for the retaining tabs -2- more difficult, the threads are coated with locking compound. The metal retainer must be removed in order to disconnect the connectors from the engine control module, for example to connect the test box or replace the module. Removing Select replace engine control module in Guided Functions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester if the ECM was replaced. Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Install the protective body covers. R8 Coupe and R8 GT Remove the right engine compartment trim. Open the four nuts on the Engine Control Module -J623- retaining clips and tilt the clips to the side. Remove the Engine Control Module -

4 J R8 Spyder Remove the cover -1-. Loosen the bolts -arrows- and remove them with the clips. Remove the Engine Control Module - J623-. All Vehicles The ECM -1- is secured in a protective housing -5- with retaining tabs -2- and shear bolts -3 and 4- to make it harder to access it. The threads of the shear bolts -4- (that are not installed in the ECM) are coated with locking compound. For this reason, the threads must be heated with the heat gun to remove both bolts. The threads of both shear bolts -3- (that are installed in ECM) are not coated with locking compound. The threads in the ECM housing must not be heated and do not require to be

5 heated (unintentional heating of the ECM). Adjust the settings on the hot air gun -4- as illustrated with the temperature control -2- at the maximum setting and the two-stage air flow switch -3- set to level 3. WARNING When heating threads of locking mechanism, shear bolts and components of protective housing are also heated intensely. Do not burn yourself on this! Make sure that only the threads are heated as much as possible, and not any of the surrounding parts. Possibly cover these parts. Grinding and drilling is not permitted. Warm threads on connector-side shear bolts for approximately 25 to 30 seconds.

6 Remove shear bolts with locking pliers (see direction of -arrow-). The shear bolts installed in the ECM do not need to be heated for removal. They can be removed without heat. Separate the protective housing from the control module connectors. Disengage the connectors from the Engine Control Module -J623- and disconnect the connector. Installing Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following: Thereafter, the Engine Control Module - J623- must be equipped with the protective housing. Clean threaded holes for shear bolts of locking compound residue. Cleaning can be performed with a thread cutter (tap). Always use new shear bolts. Install the engine compartment trim.

Separate the protective housing from the ECM connectors. Disengage the connectors from the Engine Control Module 2 -J624- and disconnect the connector. Installing Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following: A protective housing must be installed on the Engine Control Module 2 -J624- immediately afterward. Clean threaded holes for shear bolts of locking compound residue. Cleaning can be performed with a thread cutter (tap). Always use new shear bolts. Install the engine compartment trim.
