2 About this brochure We offer a wide range of courses for people from a wide range of backgrounds. This brochure covers courses for juniors (from 8 years old) and teenagers. St. Andrew s College our summer centre Open from the end of June to the end of August, St. Andrews College is a state of the art campus with everything you would expect from a top class school. The school offers 40 classrooms, a large gymnasium, a theatre, Astroturf pitches for tennis and football close to the seaside and less than 7km from the city centre. The DSE experience No one puts as much effort into a product. The classes are of the high quality you would expect, in mixed nationality groups. After class the DSE team run a packed activity and sports programme, making sure that kids are occupied the whole day long. About Us The oldest English language school in Ireland Established and recognised by the Irish government in 1968, the DSE has grown to be one of the largest schools in Ireland. We operate a city centre school, in Temple Bar, open all year round. In the summer we operate a centre in Booterstown, close to the seaside, in the south of Dublin city. Family run for personal attention to you We are a family-run business. With the DSE you are not dealing with a large, impersonal chain of schools, you are dealing with a friendly team who cares about their clients. We personally organise all services we provide, from the time you first arrive to the time we wish you a good journey home. If something needs attention during your stay, you know exactly who to ask for help us! A complete service with no hidden extras Why should you pay for books, registration fees, accommodation booking fees and other extra charges? When you book with the DSE you get everything you need to begin your course (right down to a pen and exercise book). We ll even exchange your book if you change your class. No extra charges ever we promise! Your holistic school We believe that learning is not just for the classroom. We run a social school and believe that a relaxed social atmosphere is best for learning. From the classes to the excursions and the host families we ensure that everything is in place for you to learn in a fun and relaxed environment. After class culture, fun and learning The more immersed you are in the language, the quicker you will learn. Junior courses include excursions and activities for all students of the DSE (including all entrance fees). This allows you to make friends with other nationalities and backgrounds, to practise English and to experience Dublin and Ireland. For juniors we have a programme with lots of fun activities like face painting, magic shows, arts & crafts, concerts, Irish dancing, sports and much, much more. We even include a full day excursion every Saturday in the summer months. A school for the whole family For students from age 8 to 80 (and sometimes older), for individuals, for groups, for family groups, you can be sure we have something for you. 3 Courses for 8 to 15 year olds DSE courses are based on an academic hour of 45 minutes. Courses for 16 year olds and older DSE courses are based on an academic hour of 45 minutes. We accept individuals from ages 12 to 15 years old. Our summer centre is open from the end of June until the end of August. Outside this period we accept juniors only as part of a group. Children aged 8 to 11 are accepted as part of a group or if travelling with supervision (for example in a group, with an adult or parent). All courses include an arrival and departure airport transfer and a full day excursion every Saturday. Just add spending money and let us take care of the rest. Junior Course (JJAF/JJAC) An English course with activities and sports for ages 8 to 15. Morning classes (21 lessons per week, maximum 15 per class), social and sports programme included (5 items per week, plus a full day excursion every Saturday). Course with accommodation in a host family (JJAF) Junior course with shared room accommodation in a host family, bed, breakfast, evening meal. Lunch is provided in the school during the week and by the host family at the weekend. We are open all year round for over 16s. From July to September the course takes place in St. Andrew s College, and in the city centre during the rest of the year. Teenager Course (AY24/SM21) A general English course suitable for ages 16 years and older. Course AY24 (October to June): Classes (24 lessons per week, maximum 12 per class) all books and materials included. 4 English and Sports (juniors and teenagers) Courses are based on our junior or teenager courses above with 12 lessons in sports. We offer golf, horse-riding, wind surfing, tennis, sailing and other sports on request. Lessons are given by professionals at partner sports centres or at our summer centre. (We have a sports programme available in St. Andrews basketball, tennis, soccer, rounders and more. This English and sports programme is for people who want to get professional sports coaching.) Sports pack (12 lessons): (in addition to normal course fees) Z900 Groups and Family Groups We do groups. We do groups well! Every year over 50 groups of all ages choose DSE. Consider us for your group travel needs and see the difference. We provide a complete service for groups from the time you land in Dublin until the time you board your plane. If you are a family group, we are happy to tailor a package for all members of the family. We will even give you complimentary airport transfers Recommended Supplements Travel passes save money and hassle and are valid for all of Dublin city. Book your pass with us and it will be ready for you on your first day of class or will be given to you at the airport. Take advantage of Ireland s rich musical heritage. We offer almost any musical instrument (including song writing and vocals) and almost all styles of music. This is not like a music lesson you have experienced at home our teachers are all professional, working musicians, not just music teachers. Many are published and have played with some big names. 5 Other Courses Academic Year / Highschool / Secondary School A placement in the Irish secondary education system. Students are placed into Irish secondary schools for a complete academic year. They take part in the Irish school year just like any Irish student and take the same exams. In many countries this year is recognised as a school year in the student s home country. We act in loco parentis (in the place of a parent), attending parent/teacher meetings and dealing with any other matters which may arise. We work with a very wide based selection of schools located in and around Dublin. We can offer a choice of single-sex schools, schools run by secular staff or schools where there is a particular emphasis one religion or none. Some schools will stress sports as an important part of development, whilst some will concentrate on classics and others on business subjects etc. We include all textbooks, uniforms (where required) and any school sports jerseys, ties and sports equipment that are required. Items not included are any item that the boy or girl would normally be expected to have in his/her own country for example street shoes, track and field shoes and soccer boots. If you are interested in this programme please contact us and we will take you through the application process. Please allow at least 6 months (preferably one year) for the application process.
