1 Answers for the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling - Level 6 PRACTICE TEST (SET 2) are given below. Where an alternative answer is possible it is flagged in the answer sheet. Suggested revision hints for pupils who get a question wrong are included, together with the relevant TES iboard SPaG Grammar revision pack (name in brackets) where you can find guides and exercises. 1 Use a connective or a connective phrase to complete the sentence below Even if you nag me, I am NOT going to buy you an iphone 5! 2 3 Complete the table by adding a synonym and antonym. One has been done for you. 3 6 The sentence below uses the active voice. Which is the correct passive form of the sentence? Tick the box. The moon sailing high above the clouds, illuminated the night sky. As the moon sailed high above the clouds, it illuminated the night sky. The bright moon shone in the night sky. The night sky was illuminated by the moon, sailing high above the clouds. The moon, as it sailed above the clouds, was illuminating the night sly. An active voice sentence is usually constructed subject verb predicate, and a sentence in the passive voice is constructed subject passive verb agent. (Sentence Construction; Standard English) 7 Show which adverb is which by ticking the box. Adverb of time Adverb of manner Adverb of frequency Adverb of place hopefully towards tomorrow frequently Adverbs are classified depending on their function in the sentence. The type of adverb can also give its name to the clause it introduces: e.g. an adverbial clause of manner, or an adverbial clause of time.(adverbs)

4 8 Put a semicolon in the correct place in the sentence below. Some countries argue over aid to developing countries; children, meanwhile, continue to die of preventable diseases. Comma splicing (separating two related main clauses with a comma) and to avoid it. You could practise using two sentences end-stopped with a full stop, an appropriate co-ordinating connective, or the semicolon. (Punctuation) 9 Write the correct contraction for each underlined verb in the space beside it. You could have (could ve) been more careful when I left you on your own in the house. If I had (I d) thought you would (you d) throw a party for all your friends, I would not have (I wouldn t have / I d not have) left. It is (It s) very wrong of you to do it. A common mistake with contractions is the use would of, could of and should of. The contracted verb is have so the correct contraction is ve. (Standard English) 10 Re-write the present tense sentence below in the past or past continuous tense. The verbs you need to change are underlined. While I go to primary school I have difficulty with maths, but then I change schools and things become better. When I went / was going to primary school I had difficulty with maths, but then I changed schools and things became better. (Verbs; Sentence Construction)

5 11 Write the infinitive form of the verb in the table. One has been done for you. Verb Running, ran, runs becoming, became need, needing begin, began wants, wanted Infinitive to run to become to need to begin to want The infinitive is the unchanging form of the verb, preceded by to. It is often the root form, from which the verb is conjugated. You could point out the use of to be, and to have as auxiliary verbs to form tenses. (Verbs) 12 Make the noun into an expanded noun phrase by adding information. One has been done for you. Expanded noun phrase tree swan light The tall pine tree on the promontory The graceful swan on the lake. The dazzling light on the horizon. kindness The unexpected kindness of my enemy. Examples only are given: look for the use of an adjective or two before the noun, and perhaps a prepositional phrase, or relative clause after it. There are specific exercises designed to encourage the use of expanded noun phrases in our suggested revision packs. (Nouns)

Distinguish between the different types of pronoun, e.g. mine and ours ( the book is mine and the house is ours ). The words my and our when used after a noun ( my book or our house ) are possessive ADJECTIVES. (Article, Preposition, Pronoun.)

7 15 This sentence is written in the personal form. Tick the box of the correct impersonal form. I ve always thought that we should focus conservation efforts on the species of animals most in danger. It bothers me that animals are endangered. Conservation efforts should be focused on the species of animal most in danger. I think conservation projects are good for animals. My opinion is that conservation efforts should help endangered animals. The impersonal form makes a statement without the softening of an opinion, such as I think that or It seems to me. This often used in science writing, to divorce the writer s personality, views, or agency, from a scientific fact. (Vocabulary) 16 This sentence is made up of a main clause (in italics) and a subordinate clause (underlined). The sea at Barfleur, which is always very clean, meets the Blue Flag European standard all year round. Add a subordinate clause to the main clause below. The cliffs at Lyme Regis, which were formed millions of years ago, contain many interesting dinosaur fossils. Accept any appropriate subordinate clause. Practise modifying sentences with subordinate clauses and identifying a subordinate clause in a sentence. (Sentence Construction)

8 17 Tick which type of connective is being used in each sentence. Co-ordinating connective Subordinating connective I like sitting outside where there is some shade from the trees. I have always been lucky, yet I have never been rich. Even though he is a hero, he is not proud. I m saving money so I can go on holiday. Co-ordinating connectives join two main clauses of equal weight. Subordinating connectives join a main to a dependent clause, where the meaning of the dependent clause is not complete without referral to the main clause. (Sentence Construction) 18 Underline the correct form of the verb in each set of brackets. The pride of lions (is stalking / are stalking) the wildebeest. No-one I know (like / likes) being left out of games. The team (was / were) going on tour in Europe this year. I find that people (is / are) usually kind and generous. The police (has / have) handled the problem very well. Collective nouns can cause confusion when it comes to deciding the number of the verb and whether it should be singular or plural. In one example above, The herd of deer run would be incorrect because the collective noun herd (meaning one herd) takes the singular verb runs. You can show this by putting herds in the plural, which requires the plural verb: The herds of deer run. (Verbs)
