2 RNP ( Apart from operating the national research and education network in Brazil, providing connectivity and network services to over 1200 sites in Brazil, RNP carries out R&D activities, including: Selection, funding and coordination of proposals for new network services in response to an annual open call Adaptation for RNP use of innovative network features, such as dynamic circuits, Science DMZ, SDN facilities. Participates in international R&D collaborations, such as GLIF and CineGrid Provides testbed facilities, such as FIBRE (Future Internet)

3 Collaboration EU-Brazil in ICT since 2009 Since 2008, annual Dialogues on the Information Society between EC and the Brazilian government In 2009, it was decided on joint funding of R&D projects in ICT, with Coordinated Calls (CC) every 2 years, beginning in 2010: Bilateral funding: 2 complementary projects (EU & BR) EC funds EU consortium Brazil govt (MCTI) funds BR consortium (via CNPq, or RNP from 2015) Same project submitted separately to EC and MCTI Joint Selection process Joint accompaniment of projects Duration 2,5 to 3 years After transition to H2020, this became the only form of funded collaboration of Brazilian partners in EU projects

6 Current role of RNP relative to EU-Brazil In 1st CC (2011), RNP participated in the FIBRE project, whch set up a FI experimental facility (testbed) involving EU and BR participants In 2015, RNP assumed the role of manager of the 3 rd Coordinated Call EU-Brazil, at the request of the Ministry of S+T+I (MCTI) Management of Brazilian part of FIBRE testbed, currently also involving 1 research centre and 12 universities, funded until 2018 Disseminating culture of experimental research in FI Seeking international federation with similar testbed infrastructures

7 Network Connections EU Brazil since 2004 EC made investments in ALICE and ALICE2 projects between 2003 and 2012, which helped launch th CLARA network linking a new Latin American regional network to Europe via Brazil. Current LA network has 10G backbone, with 5G link to Europe and smaller links to US. Starting in 2016, BELLA (Building European Link to Latin America) project, using a new submarine cable EllaLink between Brazil and Europe, with EU+LA R&E networks as anchor clients for 25 years, using 40% of a fibre pair (up to 40x 100G channels), plus South American distribution network. IRU purchased jointly by EU and LA R&E networks with gov t funding Objective is to provide long-term support for R&E connectivity

8 Collaboration US-Brazil since 2004 The IRNC (International Research Network Interconnections) NSF awards for Latin America since 2004 have gone to the AMPATH group at Florida International U (FIU) in Miami, in cooperation with RNP and ANSP (S. Paulo state network) Since 2005, this has provided Brazil s principal international connection for R&E traffic In 2016 this is being upgraded from 40G to 220G, with potential growth to 800G after 2017 (LSST Large Scale Synoptic Telescope, in Chile, will use part of this) In 2015 the SwitchOn project (NSF) has encouraged interactions and collaborations between research groups in networking through events in Miami and S. Paulo Collaborations will use greatly increased network capacity

9 Collaboration JP-Brazil since 2013 No direct network links. Collaboration traffic passes through US today. Joint network activity: Lossless live 8K video transmission between Brazil and Japan during 2014 FIFA World Cup (9 matches transmitted to viewing sites in BR and JP) Collaboration between RNP, Rede Globo (BR TV network), NTT Labs (JP telco) and NHK Labs (JP TV company), using R&E networks provided by RNP and collaborating networks in LA, the US and JP. More recent discussions of joint networking research activities with NTT Labs.
