1 BMGT 2700 Distance Learning Managing Diversity in the Workplace Spring 2015 Instructor Kelley L. Colston, MBA - Office Hours This is an online course. If you are having issues, please me immediately and I will try to answer your questions in a timely manner. If we cannot resolve the problem, we can arrange a time to meet on campus. Course Description This course offers a conceptual framework for understanding diversity and its effects on organizational behavior. While this course offers no easy answers to managing diversity in the workforce, it will provide action tools for effective management of diversity in organizations based upon practical methodology. There are no course pre-requisites required. Course Objectives Today, in the diversity profession, everyone is talking about "inclusion." To be more than a buzzword, inclusion requires insight, hard work, and, above all, a new level of openness based upon cultural competency. Through reading the text and completing the assignments, participants will get myths debunked, gain self-knowledge, identify cultural roles and analyze language used in the business atmosphere. These skills will teach everyone the basics in managing and participating in a diverse workforce. General Education Statement for U.S. Diversity This diversity of US Culture course includes but is not restricted to an examination of the economic, political, philosophical, social life of distinct cultural communities in the United States. The communities included in this course are based on race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion and disability. A student who completes this diversity of US culture requirement course should be able to: Explain the cultural relationships between dominant and non-dominant cultures within the U.S. Describe how diverse cultural communities contribute to the development of U.S. culture. Compare complex social structures within diverse US cultural communities. Course Benefits Managers and participants in today s workforce must just not be able to perform technical skills but must be able to work with and manage all types of people. You will learn that not everyone agrees with each other s values, perspectives, lifestyle or work ethics but valuing differences does not say you have to agree in order to respect, understand and appreciate difference. Having the skill or ability to value difference and remain open minded can give you a competitive advantage that should last for years to come.

2 Course Background The workforce is changing dramatically. These changes are having profound effects on the way you manage your organization's human resources. To cite just a few statistics: With 6 million fewer teenagers today than in 1980, and with more people leaving the workforce than entering it, worker shortages will continue to plague employers well into the next century. With Older workers having to work rather than retire, the workforce is getting older. Many homosexual, gay and lesbian workers are disclosing their sexual orientation indicating a different lifestyle. With the various ethnic groups and immigrants, the U.S. has become one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world. In the next century, Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics will outnumber Whites in the United States. In the next 10 years, 75% of new workforce entrants will be people of color and women. To attract and retain good employees, employers have to hire and motivate minorities, women, and others different from the mainstream in age, appearance, physical ability, experience, and life-style. The old ways of managing a heterogeneous workforce simply won't work anymore. Managing Diversity will help you develop new ways to manage. Text and Materials Required Title: Digital Text: Managing Workplace Diversity, 2 nd Edition, Etextbooks Publishing Company, 2013 Author: Selina A. Griswold There are no other required texts for the course. Please see website for textbook ordering information. Class Approach This is a distance learning course. All material is online. We will not meet during the course on campus. If you have any questions, please me immediately and we will resolve your issues. Course Evaluation Your final letter grade earned will be determined by a combination of homework assignments, journal, and exams. Homework Assignments (12 chapters X 40 points) Post test Exams (exam 1 = 250 points, exam 2 = 150 points) Journal Total 480 points 40 points 400 points 80 points 1,000 points Tentative grade ranges (based on 1,000 standard points) I do not give grades with (-minus). 4 Assignments Assignments are submitted in blackboard under the assignment link. o Type your answers in the Assignment Submission section of the chapter link. o Make sure to read your responses carefully and check for spelling and grammar errors. o Number your responses. You must complete the assignments on time to receive credit. Please be sure to answer the questions with the best of your ability. I don t expect perfection on the assignments but I do expect a reasonable effort. If the assignment asks for your opinion then I don t take off if I disagree. However, remember the point of the assignment is to show that you have read the text and/or material. I will leave you a comment on your submitted assignments. Please make sure to check MY GRADES a couple of days after you submit to review your points and remarks from me. Late Assignments Late assignments will not be given credit one week past the due date. If you have issues completing the homework on time, please let me know immediately. Exams Exam I covers chapters 1 through 10. It consist of 50 multiple choice and true and false questions. This exam is worth 250 points making each question worth five points each. The test is open book/notes. It is a timed exam and you will be given three hours to complete the multiple choice/true false questions. The average time to complete the exam is 45 minutes but extra time is given for those needing testing accommodation. Once you open the exam your time block starts at that time. If you leave the test, be sure that your computer won t lock you out for inactivity if it does you won't be allowed to retake the test. Your answers are not saved until you hit the submit button which you should do once you have completed every question. Exams are graded after you take the exam but the correct answers are not available until after the exam availability date ends. Exam II covers chapters 11 & 12. This exam is worth 150 points. There are 30 multiple choice and true and false questions worth five points each. The test is open book/notes. It is a timed exam and you will be given 90 minutes to complete the multiple choice/true false questions. The average time to complete this exam is 30 minutes but extra time is given for those needing testing accommodations. This second exam is optional. If at the end of the course you are NOT satisfied with your points (see grading scale above) then you can take the exam for additional points however if you are satisfied with your grade rather it is a B or C then you don t have to take the final. If you have an A before the final exam then you do not take it. Once you have at least 900 points you have the highest grade available for the university as there is no A+ in the grading scale and an A is the highest grade. NO LATE EXAMS ACCEPTED (unless you have a documented verifiable excuse) Diversity Journal The diversity journal is the perforated pages found at the back of the textbook. You must complete 8 of these 13 journals for the diversity journal points. Each chapter journal is worth 10 points. The length of each journal should be two complete paragraphs where you reflect on the topic/question that relates to each chapter. It is best to complete each chapter journal when you finish reading each chapter that way they don t pile up. You will submit the journal entries in blackboard under the

5 Journal link. The due date for the journal entry is the same as the assignment due date. You may do two extra entries for extra credit.

6 Honesty Policy Students are expected to uphold the school s standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a student s submitted work, examinations, and projects must be that of the student s own work. Students shall be guilty of academic dishonesty if they: Represent the work of others as their own. Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work. Unauthorized assistance to other students. Misrepresent the content of submitted work. The penalty for academic dishonesty is severe. The student may receive a failing grade for the project, for the course, or their name may be submitted to the Dean of Students for consideration of expulsion from college. If a student is unclear about whether a particular situation may constitute a violation, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss the situation. For this course, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged among students. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not work together on graded assignments. Such collaboration constitutes cheating. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another s work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own. If you need help on an assignment, contact your instructor or the Learning Assistance Lab, not other classmates. Withdrawal and Incomplete Policies All withdrawals must be initiated by the student by the university due date. If you are unaware of this date, please contact the registrar s office. Students can obtain drop forms from the Registrar s Office located in Rocket Hall. The instructor does not need to sign this drop form but it must be completed by the university date. Simply doing poorly in the course or missing assignments does not warrant a grade of Incomplete. Incompletes will only be issued to students who have demonstrated that due to extenuating circumstances they cannot complete the required work by the end of the semester.
