2 History Welcome to Baycrest Baycrest opened in 1918 as a Jewish facility Caters to the needs of more than 2,500 people, including frail elderly individuals as well as active seniors. We are committed to: An exceptional learning experience for students and trainees, staff, patients, families and community Knowledge translation and education scholarship Being a local, national and international resource dedicated to informing and transforming the journey of aging

8 Baycrest Programs The Brain Health Centre Clinics The Sam and Ida Ross Memory Clinic: dementias such as Alzheimer s disease, fronto-temporal dementia, mild cognitive impairment or abnormal behaviour. The Mood and Related Disorders Clinic: depression, bipolar mood disorders, mood disorders associated with other brain disorders, complicated bereavement or anxiety. The Louis and Leah Posluns Stroke and Cognition Clinic: stroke survivors with cognitive impairment due to a stroke, focusing on rehabilitation for higher level cognitive issues like perception and memory as well as motor function (movement) issues Memory Programs include: Behavioural Neurology Program (Inpatient) Memory and Aging Program Memory Clinic Memory Intervention Program Memory Link Program Other related memory services and information: Memory Disorders Memory loss and dementia website Possible treatments for symptoms of dementia Health Topics (A-Z) for detailed information about specific memory conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease, Frontal Temporal Dementia and others. 10 Baycrest Students Each year we welcome over 1400 students and trainees from over 22 health professions. Our academic partnerships with the University of Toronto and other universities and colleges across Canada, the USA and beyond allow us to provide educational experiences to undergraduate and graduate students from a wide array of professions.

12 Student Center The Student Centre is located in the Brain Health Complex, 1 st Floor The Student Centre is open 24 hours Access to the Student Centre will be issued after obtaining a tour of Baycrest The Student Centre is non-kosher, Students are allowed to bring food from outside Baycrest to the area. Students have access to computer and printer.

14 Getting Started at Baycrest Documents required on or before your start date: Register Online (please register 5 days before your start date. Complete all the orientation modules Submit the required documents to Academic Education Vulnerable Sector Screening Immunization Key policy overview and sign-off form Obtain your ID badge and computer access Get a tour of Baycrest

15 Standard of Professional Behaviour & Code of Conduct Code of Conduct Be professional and ethical in all manner Refrain from behavior such as: discrimination, harassment, abuse, or sexual harassment Standard of Professional Behaviour Introduce yourself as students Student must display skill at communicating, and interact professionally with staff and patients Unacceptable behavior is prohibited violation of criminal code, failure to respect patient s rights; sexual impropriety with a patient, theft of drugs refer to student manual

16 Dress professionally business causal (Mon Thurs., Fridays causal) The following constitute inappropriate dress: All items bearing inappropriate slogans and pictures Exercising clothing (sweat suits, spandex leggings, shorts, etc) Tank tops Dress guidelines: Any clothing that is torn, faded or patched For the safety and infection control purposes, students/trainees: Who work in direct patient care areas shall not have long nails, or wear dangling jewelry Wear safe and appropriate footwear. Students/trainees are to wear their ID badges, front facing at all times. As well as uniform must be worn at all times where designated by hospital.

18 Student Responsibilities Respects the safety and well-being of the clients in the learning experience Recognizes her/his knowledge, skills and abilities, limits of responsibilities, legislative authority and supervision requirements Contributes to the development of objectives for the experience Understands and clarifies her/his role in the provision of care with the educator/preceptor Uses clear, accurate and effective communication skills in professional interactions 18

Perform controlled acts authorized to student if they meet all three criteria: Have been taught by their faculty, preceptor or Educator Have the knowledge, skill and judgment to perform them as determined by their preceptor or faculty member Are supervised by a staff at Baycrest or their faculty member 19

20 Students are NOT permitted to Perform delegated medical acts Act as a witness under any circumstances or for any purpose Provide second signature/check for controlled drugs, blood products,, and medications listed as requiring independent double checking, double signing and documentation Provide telephone advice for discharged families Take verbal or telephone orders Be left in sole charge of the unit or any patient Transport patients alone when the presence of an RN is required
