1 CREATING DIGITAL ARTWORK Digital artwrk can take several frms: phtgraphs, charts, graphs, diagrams, radigraph, OR any scanned versins f these types f artwrk. These guidelines are designed t help yu create artwrk with a camera, scanner, r any piece f imaging sftware s that it is at the quality required fr print and nline publicatin in a jurnal. 2 DETERMINING ARTWORK TYPE Befre beginning t create new artwrk r preparing existing artwrk fr print, determine which type f artwrk yu have, and then take the apprpriate steps t prepare fr submissin. 1. Images dwnladed frm the Internet, frm a digital repsitry (stck images) r ther file archive. There is n way t imprve files frm the internet, frm digital repsitries r file archives. Reslutin is set when digital artwrk is first created. If the quality is pr t begin with, there is n way t crrect it. D nthing further with the file: submit as-is. 2. Scanned image. Fllw Optin Diagrams, drawings r graphs (line art) frm digital file. Fllw Optin Halftne Art (pht/nn-vectr illustratin) frm digital file. Fllw Optin 3. Every piece f artwrk shuld be submitted as a separate file. Artwrk shuld nt be included in the text file f the manuscript. OPTION 1: SCANNING Remember, the key is t set yur reslutins and file-type settings n yur scanner r camera BEFORE creating/scanning the image. Only scan if a digital cpy f the art is nt available. Determine yur file type (see terms sectin): Fr diagrams, drawings and graphs (images cmpsed mstly f lines): Set the reslutin t at least 1200 dpi (dts per inch, a measure f printing reslutin) at 100% the image size. Set a fnt size greater than 6. If yur image is smaller than the desired utput, increase the percentage t If device des nt allw reslutin chices, set image size t 400% greater than desired print size. Fr phtgraphs, radigraphs and ther halftne images: Set the reslutin t at least 300 dpi at 100% f image size. 3 Fr phtgraphs and radigraphs with text: Set the reslutin t at least 600 dpi at 100% f image size. If yur image is smaller than the desired utput, increase the percentage t If device des nt allw reslutin chices, set image size t 200% greater than desired print size. Crp with the fllwing in mind: Crp (r black ut) any patient identifiers. Crp unwanted text r art. Crp excessive white space. Once the scan is cmplete, save each piece f artwrk separately as a TIFF, EPS, r PDF*. OPTION 2: DIAGRAMS, DRAWINGS OR GRAPHS (LINE ART) FROM DIGITAL FILE Shading is acceptable, but d nt use pattern fills within MS Office as they result in pr print quality. If created in MS Office simply save as an Office dcument and submit the file. If created in a design prgram such as Illustratr, save as an EPS r PDF* and submit the file. If yu are unsure abut creating the pstscript file, send the native applicatin file. Make sure all fnts and imprted images are included. If using specialty sftware, pick frm the fllwing ptins: Save/exprt file as EPS r PDF if the prgrams allws. (see Creating Print-Ready PDFs) If yu have Adbe Acrbat Prfessinal installed, print t file using Acrbat as yur printer ptin t create a PDF*. If neither f the abve ptins is available, print the art t yur ffice r desktp cmputer. 4 OPTION 3: HALFTONE ART (PHOTO/NON-VECTOR ILLUSTRATION) FROM DIGITAL FILE If yur image is already a TIFF, EPS, JPEG, r PDF d nt d anything. Send the file as is. CREATING PRINT-READY PDFS *LWW accepts images saved in PDF frmat, but the PDFs must be saved using print quality settings. PDF writers ther than Adbe Acrbat Prfessinal will nt prduce a print-quality PDF. When creating a PDF using Adbe PDF (printer) r Acrbat Distiller, use the Press Quality r High Quality Print Adbe PDF Setting. Frm Illustratr, InDesign r Phtshp make sure yur dcument adheres t the criteria listed in ptins 1-3 befre saving as a PDF. D nt dwnsample (make the image smaller by remving pixels). SUBMITTING YOUR ARTWORK Every jurnal publishes custmized guidelines fr submissin. Please visit the jurnal web site and lcate the Instructins fr Authrs t determine the preferred submissin methd. Keep the fllwing in mind: Submit figures t the jurnal accrding t the Instructins fr Authrs/Authr Guidelines. Cmpressing figures int ne ZIP file speeds submissin uplading prcess. 5 TERMINOLOGY Black and White (Grayscale) / Clr Artwrk an image with variatins f tne including phtgraphs, radigraphs and scanned images, these images shuld be scanned with a reslutin f at least 300 dpi. Example: Grayscale any black and white image that is nt line-art, r in tech talk, a strip f standard gray tnes ranging frm white t black. Line Art purely black and white figures, these images shuld be scanned with a reslutin f at least 1200 dpi. Example: Reslutin - n printed media, it is the number f dts per inch; n a vide mnitr, it is the number f pixels per unit f measurement - in general, the higher the dpi, the sharper the image.
