1 High School Summer Program April 2016 General Information The High School Summer Program is offered to all Dublin City School district residents who will be incoming freshmen as well as all current high school students. Participation is voluntary, with each school day equal to approximately one week of class during the regular school year. Registrations will be accepted in the order in which they are received. Retaking a Course for Credit Recovery Students are eligible to enroll in Credit Recovery course(s) ONLY if they have received a FAILING grade for the course. This program is NOT for grade replacement. Retaking a Course for Grade Replacement If a course is repeated or made-up because of a failing grade, the grade will be listed twice on the Hotline: transcript to accurately reflect academic activity. The higher of the two grades will be calculated in the cumulative grade point average (GPA). Courses Without Credit: There are some courses offered for which no credit is earned. Completion of the course does not appear on the student s transcript and does not affect the student s grade point average (GPA). Attendance Policy (for Credit Recovery, OGT & Physical Education) Daily attendance is extremely important. Classes have time requirements imposed by the Ohio Department of Education. One day of summer studies instruction is equivalent to approximately one week of regular school instruction. Accordingly, students who register for summer studies do so with the understanding that perfect attendance is a necessity. Students who plan to take vacation or may have other conflicts during the dates of the class should not enroll. If your child is going to be absent, please call (Physical Education) or (Credit Recovery) Students are permitted one (1) absence for the above courses. Additional absence will result in loss of credit, and NO refund will be issued. Students who are tardy more than one-half hour of class will be considered absent. Students who leave class more than one-half hour prior to the end, will be considered absent. Final examinations will be given on the last day of each session. Attendance is mandatory for the last day of class. No exams will be given early. Registration: (Space is limited. Please register early.) Registration In Person: (check/money order) Drop off completed registration form and payment (to Dublin City Schools) between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM at: Dublin Administrative Building 7030 Coffman Road Dublin, Ohio Refund Policy To receive a refund for phys. ed., written notification is requested PRIOR to the beginning of the session. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER CLASSES BEGIN FOR PHYS. ED. To receive a refund for the online classes, written notification is requested PRIOR to the end of the third day of instruction of the session enrolled (June 16th or July 5th). All class fees already include a nonrefundable $50 processing fee that applies to any refunds for classes that are not canceled.

SEMESTER CLASSES ONLINE Health Education Prerequisite: Grades 9-12 Status Course No Course No.: HSA921OL1 HSA921OL2 (1 st Session) (2 nd Session) Credit:.5 Credit:.5 Cost: $250 Cost: $250 Session: June 13 July 1 Session: July 6 July 26 Health Education stresses the individual s physical, mental, emotional, and social development. The intent of the health course is to help young people make independent, informed decisions concerning their well-being. Course topics include problem solving, decision-making, communication styles, goal setting, values clarification, stress management, first aid and CPR, diseases and disorders, mental health disorders, nutrition, body system care and maintenance, organ donation, substance use and abuse, violence prevention, internet safety, and relationships including dating, refusal skills, dating violence and rape, functional versus dysfunctional family traits, birth defects and disabilities, conception, fetal development, labor and delivery, pregnancy prevention, and stages of adulthood. The online course combines lecture material with video instruction. Students will supplement learning by completing a variety of assignments that require independent research and exploration. The course is designed to take 90 hours to complete. Students will meet with the site coordinator once each week of the course at Sells MS to monitor progress. Page 2

3 HIGH SCHOOL OGT (JUNE 13-17, 2016 AT SCIOTO HIGH SCHOOL) Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) June 13-17, 2016 The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) permits schools to administer the OGT each summer only to students who have already taken and failed the OGT. The OGT will be administered on the following dates: Reading: Monday, June 20 Mathematics: Tuesday, June 21 Writing: Wednesday, June 22 Science: Thursday, June 23 Social Studies: Friday, June 24 Please Note: OGT classes and tests will be at Scioto High School 4000 Hard Rd. Dublin, OH According to ODE policy, students are required to receive ten hours of intervention in each specific content area (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, Social Studies) in which they choose to test during the summer OGT administration. Students may fulfill their intervention requirement in up to two content areas through enrollment in the OGT Test Prep Courses below. Students may participate in all ten hours to fulfill the requirement. Enrollment in the Summer School test prep course automatically registers the student for the summer OGT. 4 CR All Credit Recovery sessions for the purpose of.5 credit recovery DUE TO A FAILING SEMESTER GRADE are held from 8:30 AM 12:00 PM. Students are required to attend daily until the class is completed. No transportation will be provided. Session Dates: Language Arts s CR English I Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR0131 or HSCR0132 English I is the study of literary genres, nonfiction, and basic English skills. The course is aligned to Ohio s Academic Content Standards and prepares students for the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) in reading and writing. The course stresses listening, informal and formal speaking, writing, vocabulary development, and research skills. Grammar and spelling are also taught through the writing process. This course is the foundation for all other courses in the language arts curriculum. CR English II Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR0211 or HSCR0212 English II focuses on composition skills, vocabulary development, nonfiction, and American literature from late 19th century to the present. It is aligned to Ohio s Academic Content Standards and prepares students for the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) in reading and writing. Students write short essays (narrative and expository) and study grammar through the writing process. A formal research paper and career exploration projects are required. CR English III Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR0291 or HSCR0292 English III integrates the teaching of literature (fiction and nonfiction), vocabulary development, and writing. Emphasis in literature is based upon the chronological study of authors and their works. Grammar and mechanics are taught through the writing process. CR English IV Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR0351 or HSCR0352 English IV will prepare students for their post-secondary experience. The course will focus on critically analyzing fiction, poetry, and nonfiction text. Students will enhance their thinking, reading, writing, and speaking skills through both composition and reading. DATES and TIME Credit Recovery Classes (Semester 1 or Semester 2) Location: West Bridge Street Academy (62 W. Bridge Street) Dates and Times Mathematics Science (cont d) CR Algebra I Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR3281 or HSCR3282 Algebra I extends the study of number systems to include new numbers and their concepts as well as their applications. The course also includes a study of graphing and algebraic manipulations, interpretations, and the meaning of linear and quadratic equations. Credit in this course satisfies the university articulation specification for an algebra background. A scientific calculator is required. CR Algebra II Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR3341 or HSCR3342 Algebra II expands the concepts taught in Algebra I with additional graphic interpretation using some geometric concepts. Students will study real numbers, variables, equations, exponents, functions, and series. Skills are developed to evaluate algebraic expressions, to solve equations and verbal problems, to factor, to use the laws of exponents, and to read and draw graphs. A scientific calculator is required; a graphing calculator is strongly recommended. CR Geometry Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR3421 or HSCR3422 This course integrates the concepts of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry. The course deals with the properties of plane geometric figures. Using inductive and deductive methods of proof, students present proof of angle and line relationships. A scientific calculator is required. Science CR Phys. Science Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR2051 or HSCR2052 Physical Science is a one-year course in which students participate in hands-on explorations in the fields of chemistry and physics. Topics of interest include the physics of sports, astronomy, plate tectonics, thermodynamics, sound, and light. Energy transformations, chemistry of the periodic table, and the conversation principals would also be covered in this course. Physical Science is an activity driven course with an inquiry approach that provides both meaningful and relevant explanation of the physical world. Credit for this course may be counted toward the requirements for college articulation. CR Environ. Science Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR2131 or HSCR2132 Dublin Dates: June 13-28, City 2016 Schools Environmental Science is a one-year course in which students study the interactions among Earth's 2007 High School subsystems of water, Summer air, land, atmosphere, and Studies all the Program living components. Students investigate the similarities among Earth and the other planets, the unique position and characteristics of Earth in the solar system, processes that have shaped and continue to impact planet and environmental issues. This course integrates biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth science to characterize the picture of life on this planet. CR Biology Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR2151 or HSCR2152 Biology I is a one-year course in which students study the living world in a laboratory and classroom setting. Topics of study include the following: laboratory safety, biotechnology, the nature of science, cell biology, genetics, evolution, living systems, ecology, energy, and the organization of life. Methods of instruction include data analysis, research, laboratory work, computer simulation, and the application of biology to daily life. Social Studies CR Modern World History Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR1621 or HSCR1622 Modern World History is the study of people and cultures beginning circa Emphasis is placed on the development of world events in the 20th century. The course addresses content covered in Ohio s Academic Content Standards and prepares students for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in social studies. The study of cultures, geography, economics, government, and civics will be integrated into historical topics. Students will also develop decision-making, problem-solving, and criticalthinking skills. CR American History Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR1601 or HSCR1602 This course is a survey of United States history from 1877 to present. It emphasizes content addressed In Ohio s Academic Content Standards and prepares students for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in social studies. The study of cultures, geography, economics, government, and civics will be integrated into historical topics. Students will also develop decision-making, problem-solving, and criticalthinking skills. CR American Government Course No.: HSCR170 Credit: 0.50 Cost: $225 American Government examines the principles and practices of the federal government. Students explore the basic structure of the U.S. government and focus on skills needed to become effective, participatory citizens. There is an emphasis on practical application of knowledge and skills through simulation and community interaction. CR Civics Course No.: HSCR174 Credit: 0.50 Cost: $225 A citizen is a person who is legally recognized by a state and entitled to the state s rights and privileges. Civics is the study of the rights and duties of such a person. One of the best ways to understand your rights and duties as a citizen is to study the government that defines and upholds them. In Civics A, you will learn about politics and government, and you ll analyze democracy, which is the system of government used in the United States. Finally, you will examine the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the U.S. Government. A course in Civics teaches you how to actively participate in governance and how you can help improve the quality of governance at all levels. Page 4
