VINCENT S COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION DEPARTMENT SPRING 2014 CST100VAA Central Sterile Processing Technician Program (Non-Credit Program) This program represents the basic study of Central Sterile Processing and preparation for national certification as a Central Sterile Processing Technician. The program includes human anatomy/physiology, microbiology and infection control, decontamination and sterilization processes, handling, care and identification of surgical instrumentation. Upon successful completion of the program graduates will be eligible to sit for the CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) examination to receive national certification. Class is held on Mondays & Wednesdays from 5:30 to 9:00PM starting 1/21/14 to 3/05/14. Check our web site for further information. HMG211VAA Health Care Management & Leadership (3 Credits) The student is provided a broad understanding of the management functions necessary for healthcare professionals. There is a focus on characteristics of effective leadership. Case studies are utilized to apply the principles learned. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is part of the Health Care Management Program. HMG311VAA Legal & Ethical Issues in Healthcare (3 Credits) Designed to give students an understanding of the legal and ethical issues in healthcare. The course includes relationships among employers/employees, physicians/employees (nurses, radiographers, etc), service providers/patients; patients/third party payers, etc. Case studies are used to help students understand the difficult, yet integral, relationships among all involved in the delivery of healthcare services. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Health Care Management Program and the BSRS Healthcare Management Option. HPR303VAA Alternative Therapies in Healthcare (2 Credits/30 Hours) This course will offer an introduction to diverse health care systems and practices in the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). The goal of this course is to provide a working knowledge of alternative healthcare to the science professional to be utilized in the provision of healthcare to individuals, families and communities across the lifespan. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 3/24/14. This course is included in the Health Promotion Program and can also be chosen as an elective for the BSRS program. HPR110VAA Lay Patient Navigator (3 credits) Lay Patient Navigator is an individual who is familiar to the communities and acts as an advocate or liaison between community members and the health care system. Class is held online starting 3/24/14 to 5/12/14. HPR325VBB Cancer Survivorship (2 Credits/30 Hours) This course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers to increase their effectiveness in cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Class is held online starting 3/24/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Health Promotion Program and the Patient Navigator and can also be chosen as an elective for the BSRS program. 4 HPR350VAA Patient Navigator (3 credits) Patient Navigator is a trained clinical professional who guides a patient through the healthcare maze and helps the patient to the road of recovery. The Patient Navigator works with patients to identify and eliminate barriers that may be preventing a timely diagnosis or treatment. Once diagnosed, the patient and patient navigator continue through the health maintenance phase or sometimes prepare for the end of life. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. Pre-requisite: HPR325 and BIO331 or BIO334. HRS102VAA Office Procedures (3 Credits) This course provides the student with the office skills necessary to work in healthcare facilities, physicians offices or health maintenance organizations. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Healthcare Reimbursement Specialist Program. HRS103VAA Computerized Billing and Practice Management (3 Credits) The student learns to input patient information, billing details, and appointment scheduling and accounts receivable reports utilizing Medical Manager Software. Class is held on Tuesdays from 5:00 to 8:00PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Healthcare Reimbursement Specialist Program. Pre-requisite: HRS101 Insurance Reimbursement & Billing Procedures HRS104VAA Coding Procedures I (3 Credits) Designed to provide the student with an understanding of coding basics and their accurate utilization. Emphasis is placed on coding diagnoses using the ICD-9 & ICD-10 CM systems and classifying procedures using the CPT-4 system. Class is held on Mondays from 5:30 to 8:30PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Healthcare Reimbursement Specialist Program and the Hospital Coding Program. Pre-requisite: MED105 HRS108VAA Introduction to ICD-10 (3 Credits) This course will help the student plan and prepare for the ICD-10 transition. It will include pathway tracks for inpatient and outpatient coders in acute care as well as pathways for specialty settings such as home health, long-term care, and physician practice. It can also include a path for other non-coding health care personnel involved in the transition. Class is held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. Pre-requisite: Satisfactory score on Readiness Exam. MED105VAA Medical Terminology (3 Credits) This course offers an introduction to medical terms through an analysis of their construction including prefix, suffix, root, connecting and combining forms. The student acquires an understanding of medical meanings applicable to the structure, function, and diseases, of the human body. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Medical Assisting Program, Healthcare Reimbursement Specialist Program, Hospital Coding Program, and Medical Office Program. MED200VAA Illness and Disease (3 Credits) This course is designed to assist the student in developing an understanding about illnesses and diseases that are frequently diagnosed or treated in ambulatory health care settings. Class is held online starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Medical Assisting Program and the Hospital Coding Program. 5 MED201VAA Medical Office Procedures II (3 Credits) This course further develops the competencies needed to perform administrative skills necessary for an entry level medical assistant. Class and lab is held on Saturdays from 9:00AM to 3:00PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Medical Assisting Program. Pre-requisites: MED101, MED105 and Co-requisite: BIO115 MED210VAA Clinical Medical II (4 Credits) This course offers a continuation of the study of the theory, practice, and techniques of the clinical components of medical assisting. Class is held on Mondays from 9:30AM to 12:30PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. There is a lab held also on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:30PM or on Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:30PM. This course is included in the Medical Assisting Program. Pre-requisite: MED110. Co-requisite: MED200, MED201, MED215. MED215VAA Pharmacology (3 Credits) This course introduces the student to medication therapy. The nature and properties of drugs are examined. Class is held on Thursdays from 9:30AM to 12:30PM starting 1/21/14 to 5/12/14. This course is included in the Medical Assisting Program. Pre-requisite: MED110. Co-requisite: MED200 MSA100VAA Multi-Skilled Assistant Program (Non-credit Program) Multi-skilled Assistants are allied healthcare workers who, upon completion of this certificate program, are CPR certified, technically competent in basic phlebotomy, electrocardiogram and data entry skills. Graduates will also be CPR certified and eligible to take the certification exam as a nurse aid (CNA). Classes are held on Monday, Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 8:30AM to 4:30PM starting 1/13/14 to 4/30/14. Check web site for further information. PHT100VAA Pharmacy Technician Program (Non-credit Program) Offered in cooperation with the Connecticut Pharmacists Association, the program prepares individuals to enter the pharmacy field in a hospital, home infusion or community pharmacy as an ancillary working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) examination to receive national and state certification. Classes are held on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:40PM starting 3/04/14 to 5/8/14. Check website for further information. SPA100VAA Medical Spanish (1 Credit) This course is designed for healthcare professionals to learn basic conversational Spanish used in medical situations, with emphasis in health-related vocabulary and interaction with Spanishspeaking patients and their families.
