The two sides have never met in UEFA club competition. Brann have played four games against English sides, drawing one and losing three. They lost on aggregate against Queen's Park Rangers FC in the 9/ UEFA Cup first round with Stan Bowles scoring a hattrick in both legs and then drew at home and lost away against Everton's neighbours Liverpool FC in the 99/9 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarterfinals. Geir Hasund, who scored the equaliser in that home game in Bergen, remains the only Brann player to have scored a goal against an English side. Brann coach Mjelde, then a forward, played in both legs of that tie against Liverpool. Mjelde also played in and draws against Chelsea FC in the 99/9 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during his time at FK Austria Wien. Everton will be making their first competitive trip to Norway. Brann, Norwegian champions, have won only one of their three home games in the UEFA Cup this season, losing the other two. Everton have won all three of their UEFA Cup away games this season. The UEFA Cup is open to the holders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play and clubs eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions. The eight thirdplaced clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions group stage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase. Format: If two or more teams were equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria was applied to determine the rankings: a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons Locallytrained players rule: In February, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to players, and from /, at least six places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist involving an unlimited number of Under players who have been at the club for two seasons. In / the number of locallytrained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in /9, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained. A clubtrained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of and, whereas an associationtrained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of and. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locallytrained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence. Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of teams who play over two legs to find the clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runnersup and thirdplaced teams from each section advance to the last where they are joined by the eight thirdplaced clubs from the UEFA Champions. Here, the traditional twomatch knockout format resumes, until the final. The dates for the games are as follows: the Round of takes place on / and February; Round of on and / March; quarterfinals on and April; semifinals on April and May. The / UEFA Cup final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium on May. Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies).
