1 CALL FOR PAPERS SPECIAL ISSUE EUROPEAN MANAGEMENT REVIEW TOPIC: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON SECURING HUMAN AND SOCIAL RIGHTS AND DIVERSITY GAINS AT WORK IN THE ERA OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AND AUSTERITY. Motivation Guest Editors: Dr. Joana Vassilopoulou, University of Kent, United Kingdom Dr. Olivia Kyriakidou, Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece Dr. Andri Georgiadou, University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom Dr. Jose Pascal da Rocha, Columbia University, USA The current global economic crisis is a major concern for those in mature and emerging economies alike. Some countries continue to experience higher levels of economic growth, such as in the global south, while others are on a slow path of recovery, or as in the extreme case of Greece in a seemingly hopeless situation. There is also great disparity in how governments respond to the crisis in terms of policy responses. The USA and some European governments, some forced by the European Union s TROIKA in return for bail- outs, have decided to impose various austerity measures on their populations, as a response to the crisis. This has led to significant uncertainty, due to an increasingly precarious mode of living for many in the world. Neoliberal austerity measures have been legitimised by the global economic crisis, deepening poverty, inequality and diminished social rights across the world (Atasoy, 2014). In such uncertain times, human and social rights matter even more, but in accordance with the neoliberal agenda, human and social rights are under attack by various governments across the globe. One such example can be found when looking towards the UK, which in the past was viewed as a pioneer, in the European context, with regards to human rights and particularly equality, diversity practices and legislation. Now it seems, the UK has started to become a pioneer in dismantling all past achievements in the field of diversity and equality. In the last few years, the LibDem/Conservative coalition government has been accused widely of systematically dismantling the UK s equality infrastructure (Brett, 2012; Fawcett Society, 2013). For example, the coalition government recently reformed the

2 Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). This so- called reform of the EHRC, meant that the EHRC lost its office, most of its staff and the budget was slashed from 70m to 17m. Not only has this reform had serious implications for the EHRC s ability to hold the government to account, but also it shows the lack of commitment on side of the government with regard to human rights. This was followed by a proposal to revoke provisions in the Equality Act 2012, since these protections are viewed as unnecessary by the coalition government (Brett, 2012). New attacks on human rights have arrived in 2015, with the newly- elected conservative government. The conservative party has now proposed to repeal the Human Rights Act and withdraw from the European court of human rights in Strasbourg. Considering this latest development, it is unsurprising that the Equality and Human Rights Commission recently expressed concern in an open letter, to a parliamentary committee, about potentially regressive steps and the possible reversal of the UK s global role in promoting human rights (Guardian, 2015). At the same time, business is not a passive observer in this setting. Business is a key institutional player, one that may contribute to the erosion of diversity gains and certainly one that is impacted by it. The global economic crisis challenges the way we do business. In particular, the flexibilization, de- materialization and precariousness of work are phenomena strongly linked with the neo- liberal agenda and the global value chains of most companies generating diverse and multiple interactions between individuals and organizations. Nevertheless, business might also provide alternatives and exhibit values and models of work and practices that do not follow the logic of profit maximization that puts in danger the human and social rights and diversity gains at work in the era of austerity. Research questions This special issue intends to extend and consolidate this growing area of interest. We are interested in contributions which explore the impact of crisis and austerity on different dimensions of paid work, such as: a) employment conditions (involuntary part- time and temporary contracts/ zero- hour contracts, in- work poverty, unemployment and sectoral segregation, working conditions in terms of infringement and restrictions of rights, entitlements and working hours, etc.; b) human and social rights at work; c) diversity, equality and inclusion at work; d) HRM practices. Questions of interest include, but are not limited to: Does the on- going global economic crisis and austerity put human and social rights and diversity gains at risk?

3 How does the global economic crisis affect the lived realities of workers at multiple intersections of class, race, ethnicity and gender and at multiple geopolitical locations? Are there any forms of response and solidarity to the threat of a backlash in employment conditions, diversity gains, human and social rights at work, involving for example trade unions, social corporates, grass- roots movements, NGOs, policy makers, diversity and human rights advocates? What is the impact of crisis on paid work, i.e. in terms of employment, unemployment and sectoral segregation, employment conditions such as involuntary part- time and temporary contracts, in- work poverty as well as the impact of the economic crisis on working conditions in terms of infringement and restrictions of rights and entitlements? Understanding and addressing the gender pay gap, as well as the unpaid work in the current economic crisis: What do we know and what do we need to know about gender diversity dynamics to support change leaders to undertake systemic change in securing human and social rights in their organizations? Are there any differences in social exclusion in terms of education, life- long learning and training, housing conditions and living arrangements, health and long- term care activities? How does flexibility and precariousness affect employee identities in organizations? How can organizations reflect critically on the concept of work in the light of economic austerity? How does resistance emerge from organizations themselves and which organizational practices protect against exclusion and inequality in the era of austerity? How effective are current forms of governance for ensuring that human rights and diversity gains are respected? How should the management of organizations be expected to respond to the refugee crisis that we have seen in recent times? To what extent are alternative models of organizing emancipatory? New frameworks to enhance inclusion and social equality in organizations What is the role of employment and EDI policy dimensions in the time of crisis at multiple geopolitical locations? Comparative papers as well as single country cases: what is impact of the context of the respective country or countries on how employment conditions, HRM practices, diversity, human and social rights issues are dealt with during times of crisis and austerity?
