1 Directory of Western New York Housing Services a comprehensive listing of housing agencies and services available throughout Western New York June 2003
2 FOREWORD One role of the Community Affairs office of the Buffalo Branch, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, is to encourage and support community partnerships that identify and address concerns impacting the well-being of residents and communities throughout western and central New York. As part of an on-going commitment to assist with housing issues, the Buffalo Branch, in cooperation with several housing agencies, is pleased to release Phase One of a comprehensive housing resource directory. The directory catalogs non-profit housing agencies and services available throughout Erie and Niagara Counties. Phase Two, scheduled for completion at the end of 2003, will incorporate agencies and services available in the Monroe County area. The Fed and its partners are pleased to support the community s access to housing agencies and services by supplying a vehicle which will help make the process of finding housing support agencies and services easier. We would like to thank all agencies that provided information for inclusion in the directory, with a special thanks to the Belmont Corporation and the Independent Living Center for their valuable input in this undertaking. i
3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS The agencies listed in this directory perform a wide variety of housing services for the community. According to an informal survey taken by the Belmont Shelter Corporation, the most frequently asked questions presented to their staff are as follows: Where can I get emergency housing? How can I find an affordable place in which to live? How can I get help with buying a house? How long is the wait for Section 8 assistance? Can I get rental assistance faster because I am disabled? Where can I get money to help me with a security deposit? I just got evicted: where can I go? For answers to these and other questions, we have compiled a comprehensive listing of agencies that offer assistance with these and many other questions related to housing. ii
