Students who are officially enrolled in credit classes must be in attendance or communicate with the instructor no later than the first scheduled class. Students who are absent without prior approval of the instructor or the division/department chair may be withdrawn by the college. NOTE: Students should not assume that they have been dropped if they have not attended class on the first day. RESIDENT STATUS/TUITION For state-supported class tuition purposes, a state resident is one who is a U.S. citizen, who has permanent resident immigrant status, refugee-parolee status or a qualifying visa (A, E, G, H1, I, K, or L), and 1) has established a domicile (residence) in the state of Washington primarily for purposes other than educational for a period of at least one year immediately prior to the first day of the quarter and was financially independent from parents or legally appointed guardians for the calendar year during which college enrollment begins, or 2) is a financially dependent student, one or both of whose parents or legal guardians have maintained a domicile in the state of Washington for at least one year immediately prior to the first day of the quarter. NOTE: As required by the State, residents document their legal residence in Washington by showing that for the entire 12 months immediately preceding the beginning of the quarter, they have done all of the following: 1) held a Washington driver s license or identification card, 2)had their vehicle registered in Washington, 3) have registered to vote in Washington (if applicable). Other documentation may be required. Students wishing to change their non-resident classification should petition the college prior to time of registration by completing a Residency Questionnaire available in Enrollment Services. Students who are not permanent residents or U.S. citizens may qualify for resident tuition at Washington state colleges, under provisions of a bill passed in 2003 by the state legislature. The bill applies to students who have graduated from a Washington state high school; it also applies to students who have received the equivalent of a high school diploma while living in Washington. Students must also meet additional criteria. For more information, contact the Registration Office. CREDIT/AUDIT (NO CREDIT) Students must officially register and pay full tuition for the course(s) they want to audit. An N grade will be recorded on the transcript. After an N is issued, the course may be repeated only once. You may change your courses from credit to audit or audit to credit in person only at the Registration office through the eighth week of the quarter (sixth week for summer). Instructor permission is required beginning the tenth day of the quarter (eighth day for summer). REPEATING A COURSE There are two situations in which a student may repeat a course. Both the initial course and repeated course must be taken at the same campus. 1. GPA Improvement. A credit course may be taken no more than two times total. Upon successful completion of a repeated course, the student can submit a formal request to the Registration Office to have the highest grade used in the GPA computation. Unless specifically requested, the first grade and the repeat grade will be averaged. Note: the student will be credited only once for the class. It is the student s responsibility to notify the Registration Office when the repeated course is completed. 2. Courses taken for credit more than one time (e.g., PEC and music) use the same course number from quarter to quarter. In this situation credits earned are cumulative, and all grades are used to determine the GPA. Note: Students planning to transfer to fouryear institutions should be aware that many four-year institutions have strict policies on course repeats. We recommend checking with the Advising Office before repeating a class. Students are encouraged to consult with their instructors before initiating a grade review process as outlined in the complaint procedure available through the Vice President for Student Services Office. After a course grade has been assigned, supplemental or additional class work will not be accepted for the purpose of changing that grade except in the case of an I (incomplete) grade. Note: Students must complete the coursework as directed by the instructor during the following quarter (excluding Summer Quarter). Grade errors reported after two consecutive quarters may not be changed. ADD/DROP Students may add classes using the Web through the fifth day of the quarter (fourth day for summer). After this date, all adds must be processed in the Registration office and require instructor s signature after the tenth day of the quarter (eighth day for summer).students may drop classes via the Web through the eighth week of the quarter (sixth week for summer). Instructor permission is not required to drop classes. FULL-TIME/ PART-TIME STATUS For academic, Social Security, VA, loan guarantor, etc., you must enroll in and complete at least 12 credits to be considered full-time; six to eleven credits is half-time; five or fewer is less than half-time.
