Tomasz Warzocha, Treasurer: B.A. Artur Borkowski, SPIE Student Chapter FOTON was established in June Members of the Chapter come from different faculties of Lublin University of Technology (LUT) and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS). Among us are electronic engineers, computer scientists, chemists, artists and humanists. Until now we have created a structure containing three workgroups: Fiber Decorations Side Light Fibers Fiberscope Fiber Decorations

2 Research and cultural project were realized in co-operation with student of Humanistic Department (UMCS) - Miss Anna Wendeker. To get the effect of mysterious afterglow surrounding dress, fibers (which were purchased from Fibrochem, the company from Lublin) were subjected to the series of investigations. The aim was to improve the side emission of the light. Polymer optical fibers were bought to needlework the dress. They are characterized by smaller fragility in the comparison to siliceous fibers and the PCS fibers. Additional advantage of polymer fibers is large flexibility. As a source of light the LED diode was used. Next fiber dresses are in the middle of realization. At the same time we have designed different decorations.

3 Pictures presented above are examples of one of them called: "Swingswish with an optical fiber". To its realization we have used mentioned above polymer fibers and as a light source we have used super bright LED diodes. Side Light Fibers Though the side emission from optical fibers is disadvantageous effect in their classic applications (telecommunication and sensors), how people's wisdom tells, every cloud has a silver lining. Optical fibers can be applied as elements of devices of lighting technology and also as a decorative element. More and more new applications of side light optical fibers force development of their technology. Investigating issue of side light emission occurs many additional problems to solve, for example: how

4 to extort equal (on whole length of optical fiber) side emission; the limitation of length of side light optical fiber; maximum power of light that can be sidelong emitted. Therefore we have started to investigate this phenomenon. In 2007/08 SPIE Lublin Student Chapter participated in many conferences and science initiatives: February 2007 Elections has taken place and new members of the board were chosen. The new president of SPIE Lublin Student Chapter was selected M.Sc. Małgorzata Gil. April 2007 During Days of Chemists members of SPIE Lublin Student Chapter have taken part in mini-symposium and posters session. Our Chapter had taken up co-operation with students from Wrocław Polytechnic. May 2007 Members of our Chapter have taken part in IEEE-SPIE WILGA Symposium and uttered few oral presentations.

5 Our members visited Institute of Electronics Materials Technology. Our members participated in workshops on Wrocław University. October 2007 SPIE Lublin Student Chapter has taken part in The Fair of Scientific Organizations on which members have presented finished projects. November 2007 In cooperation with Anna Wendeker, a student of cultural studies at the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, we have started new project Photonic Dress.

6 December 2007 We have started new research project Side Light Fibers. Our members participated in congress of Student Section of the Polish Chemical Society in Warsaw. January 2008 We have presented Photonic Dress during conference on the Department of Chemistry at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. Our members have taken part in Xth International Conference of Optical Fibers and its Applications in Białowieża. They have presented posters and Photonic Dress. February 2008 SPIE Lublin Student Chapter participated in Open Doors Day at the Department of Chemistry on Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

7 March 2008 SPIE Lublin Student Chapter participated in Open Doors Day at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. Election has taken place and new members of the board were chosen. The new president of SPIE Lublin Student Chapter was selected M.Sc. Małgorzata Gil. April 2008 Our members participated in congress of Student Section of the Polish Chemical Society in Sulejów. M.Sc. Małgorzata Gil won the first price for oral presentation and our other member, Artur Borkowski was awarded for poster Side Light Fibers. We have taken part in event : Girls on Polytechnic. This was another occasion to present our projects.

8 During The Days of Chemists members of SPIE Lublin Student Chapter have taken part in mini-symposium Optical Fibers and its Applications and posters session. The special guest was dr Elżbieta Bereś-Pawlik from Wrocław University. May 2008 Members of our Chapter participated in Internation SPIE Youth Forum in Wilga, organized by SPIE Warsaw Student Chapter. M.Sc. Małgorzata Gil presented a paper: Photo DSC. Achievements of our SPIE Lublin Student Chapter have been presented during First Symposium of the Photonics Society of Poland in Warsaw. As a effect of cooperation with Wrocław University our members participated in workshops in Wrocław.
