1 Quality Network for Universities Site Visit Agenda May 2-6, 2011 Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey THEME Global Collaboration and Partnerships as a Strategy for Fiscal and Institutional Sustainability OBJECTIVES To explore globalization and internationalization of higher education by learning more about universities in Turkey and their engagement in global processes; To understand the dynamics of social, demographic, labour market and fiscal conditions in Turkey and how they are combining to affect the short- and long-term vision of post-secondary institutions; To learn more about Turkish universities' experiences of international mobility and transferability, including their involvement in the Bologna process; To provide a platform for dialogue and exchange between university leaders in Canada and Turkey; To gain insights on how institutions in Turkey are resourcing the preservation of aging infrastructure and antiquities; and To enrich relationships and build new opportunities for collaboration between Canada and Turkey for example, by exploring the potential for institutions in Turkey to engage with Canadian counterparts on faculty and student exchanges, science and technology partnerships, commercialization ventures, etc. Sunday, May 1, :05 p.m. Arrive in Ankara. This session will present a general overview and characteristics of higher education in Turkey. Additionally, there are 5 graduate schools with 97 masters and 62 doctorate programs and a "School of Foreign Languages" which includes the English Preparatory Department. 13 undergraduate programs (including 1 international program) are offered in connection with METU Northern Cyprus Campus. METU is a state university founded in 1956, currently has about 23,000 students of which 4,500 are in masters and 2,700 are in doctorate programs. METU hosts over 1,500 international students from nearly 80 different countries studying toward myriad of academic degrees. With 168 Erasmus agreements and 182 bilateral exchange and cooperation agreements with universities in third countries annually, METU sends 350 students and hosts 300 students and 50 teaching staff/researchers.
