Self-Service BI
Why Self-Service BI? 1) Low adoption of BI tools in companies 15% 15% 13% 12% 9% 8% BIS7 BIS8 BIS9 BIS10 BIS12 BIS13 n= 1732/1965/1718/2140/1830/2231 Total Percentage of employees in an organisation that use BI tools (BIS 13 average); BeNe 2013: 18% Source: BARC BI Survey 7/8/9/10/12/ BARC
Why Self Service BI? 2) Poblems encountered in using the BI product Slow query performance No significant problems Poor data governance Lack of interest from business users Poor data quality Requirements changed Company politics Administrative problems Unable to get data from some systems Could not agree on requirements Unreliable software Software not flexible enough Missing key features Software too hard to use Product can not handle data volume Product security limitations Source: BI Survey 13, n = % 8% 8% 7% 5% 4% 3% 3% 3% 6% 5% 7% 6% 8% 8% 10% 13% 12% 11% 12% 12% 15% 14% 15% 26% 24% 19% 18% 16% 16% 15% Belgium & Netherlands Average 36% BARC

Self-Service BI has to cover several aspects because it means different things to different users. Self Service BI Creating analysis for personal use Design of reports and dashboards (ad-hoc) Integration of private and local data Creating or modifying data models Data Stewardship (e.g. monitoring DQ) Data Governance Usability Visualization BARC
Which self-service tasks are carried out by business users in your company? Creating reports or dashboards for other business users 50% 58% Creating analysis for personal use 49% 56% Manually accessing data sources Monitoring data quality 27% 25% 22% 34% Creating or modifying data models Monitoring and controlling automatic data import Manual data cleansing Source: BI Survey 13, n = % 16% 10% 19% 5% 14% Belgium & Netherlands BI Survey 13 average BARC
Beware: challenges in data governance are rising with self-service BI Slow query performance No significant problems Poor data governance Lack of interest from business users Poor data quality Requirements changed Company politics Administrative problems Unable to get data from some systems Could not agree on requirements Unreliable software Software not flexible enough Missing key features Software too hard to use Product can not handle data volume Product security limitations Source: BI Survey 13, n = % 8% 8% 7% 5% 4% 3% 3% 3% 6% 5% 7% 6% 8% 8% 10% 13% 12% 11% 12% 12% 15% 14% 15% 26% 24% 19% 18% 16% 16% 15% Belgium & Netherlands Average 36% BARC
Mobile BI
Which of the following does your company do or plan to do with your BI product? 22 Why is mobile BI adoption so much slower than planned? Effort for building and maintaining apps on mobile devices Getting over the 10% management users barrier Just putting what you have on a mobile device is often not good enough Mobile device diversity Mobile devices and mobile operating systems Mobile reports and analysis have less features User experience varies widely Restricting security requirements Data encryption for transmission and local storage Device Management security features(remote wipe, locking, ) Mobile devices are preferred devices only in business processes that are actually mobile themselves Sales and customer service are partly typical mobile processes For most other processses mobile BI is second choice or nice to have BARC
Which mobile BI functions do you use with your BI product? Display of interactive reports and dashboards 79% 79% Data analysis 58% 55% Display of static reports and dashboards 53% 70% Creation of notifications 32% 31% Data collection Source: BI Survey 13, n = % 20% Belgium & Netherlands BI Survey 13 average BARC
Big Data
Big Data describes methods and technology for the higly scalable integration, storage and analysis of poly-structured data. Not only tools Growing data volumes Growing user numbers Complex analysis Fast availability of data Structured data Semi-structured data Unstructured data All layers of an analytical infrastructure

Conclusion - Status Quo and Trends in BI Many general IT trends influence BI trends Many BI trends focus (finally!) on business users and their typical problems: agility, usability, performance, collaboration Some of the most influential trends are self-service BI, mobile BI and Big Data. Belgium and the Netherlands are in many ways similar to the global BI community but show some differences: Significant more problems with query performance and data governance, Higher usage rate of BI tools in companies Bigger focus on data analysis (instead of reporting), More intention on using poly-structured (Big) Data, Less focus on data integration as part of self-service BI, More usage of mobile BI. 4/30/2014 BARC
