2 Bullying Prevention and Intervention in FCPS System-wide approach implemented beginning 2011 Goals To create a positive, secure, and supportive school climate To integrate and align bullying prevention and intervention practices within the school s positive behavior approach

3 History of Bullying Prevention Efforts Since 2011 Seven core components taught to all school teams between Schools self-assess their prevention and intervention programs All school improvement plans in include a goal to address bullying addressing vulnerable populations

4 Resiliency Project Resiliency is the capacity to overcome adversity by responding in healthy and productive ways to successfully meet life s challenges. The FCPS approach to bullying is to help all individuals feel safe, strong, and confident that they can have a positive impact in their community and together stop bullying.

5 Bullying Definition Bullying is aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. Bullying includes cyberbullying. Bullying does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict Virginia State Code and FCPS SR&R

7 Types of Bullying Physical Verbal Relational 7

8 Cyberbullying Talk regularly with your child about online activities and cell phone use. Explain that cyberbullying is harmful, unacceptable, and can be a crime. Ask them to tell you if they become aware of cyberbullying or other inappropriate online activity. Monitor social media and cell phone use and periodically check history. Caution your child not to respond to negative messages. Take the phone away at night. Keep records of inappropriate messages and pictures and try to identify the sender. Notify the school administration, your internet service provider, and possibly the police about inappropriate activities, particularly if your child has been threatened. 8 8

16 What Can Parents Do? Emphasize your child s talents and abilities to build self esteem and resiliency. Encourage the child s participation in activities to support unique interests, civic and service activities. Create opportunities for talking with the child about what he or she experiences and observes in school. Take the child s reports of bullying seriously. Encourage the child to report concerns about bullying to an adult at school. Report your concerns to a teacher, the school counselor, or the school principal

17 If You Think Your Child Has Been Bullied Let the child know that bullying is not his or her fault. Reinforce that it took strength to say something, and things will get better. Read together books about bullying and resilience. Report your concerns to the school and provide all the factual information. Check back with the child to make sure the bullying has stopped. Consult with school counselor if you observe continuing behaviors of concern persistent sadness, health problems, school avoidance

18 If Your Child Has Bullied Someone Let your child know that bullying is not appropriate behavior. Be consistent in establishing rules, boundaries, and consequences. Become familiar with the child s friends and their behavior. Teach the importance of empathy, compassion, and the ability to see someone else s point of view. Model empathy and non-aggressive responses in your own behavior. Consult with school counselor or psychologist if problems with aggressive behaviors continue
