The IEEE Educational Activities Board, in support of IEEE s core purpose: 2 Recommends policies on educational matters Plans IEEE educational programs Coordinates pre-university and university programs Develops continuing education products and activities Creates guidelines for accreditation bodies Monitors accreditation activities Represents IEEE in matters regarding engineering education 11-Apr-12
Pre-University Activities Aim: To increase the understanding of engineering, computing and technology (ECT) among the preuniversity constituencies Objective: Increase the propensity of young people to select engineering as a career path by providing programs and products for the adult influencers in their lives Sample activities: Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) Engineering Projects In Community Service (EPICS) Information Portals: TryEngineering.org, TryNano.org, TryComputing, IEEE Spark
Teacher In Service Program (TISP) A program that trains IEEE volunteers to work with pre-university teachers Based on approved lesson plans Prepared/reviewed by IEEE volunteers Tested in classrooms Aligned with Education Standards Designed to highlight engineering design principles Emphasis on volunteer-teacher interaction as opposed to volunteerstudent interaction Facilitated as a train-the-trainer program
Teacher In Service Program (TISP) Train volunteers IEEE Section Members IEEE Student Members Teachers and Instructors using approved lesson plans on engineering and engineering design IEEE Volunteers Teachers Students IEEE members will develop and conduct TISP training presentations with Teachers 5 Teachers will incorporate these lesson plans in their classroom instruction to impact students
Overall TISP Goals Empower IEEE champions to develop collaborations with local pre-university education community to promote applied learning Enhance the level of technological literacy of preuniversity educators Increase the general level of technological literacy of pre-university students Increase the level of understanding of the needs of educators among the engineering community Identify ways that engineers can assist schools and school systems 6
Training Workshop and Presentations Working with Sections, EA organizes a day and a half Training Workshop for volunteers for at least attendees EA will negotiate and contract the venue, manage the logistics, facilitate planning and execution of the workshop Section organizing committee of 5 to 6 volunteers will provide feedback on workshop agenda, identify invited educators, and promote event During the workshop, volunteers will begin organizing into teams to develop an action plan After the workshop, volunteers working with teachers and school administrators will conduct in-service presentations and spread the program in their school districts 7 11-Apr-12

Why is IEEE interested in preuniversity engineering education Because it is in our stated and un-stated mission Because in many IEEE Sections there is marked decline in the interest of young people in Engineering This is bad for the future of these communities and would have a negative impact on their standard of living Because we do not believe the problem is going to be tackled effectively without us Industry does not appear to be able to address the problem directly Governments do not appear sufficiently concerned (yet) Other engineering associations look up to us
Engineering in the pre-university classroom Institutionalization of IEEE Teacher In Service Program IEEE Section engineers develop and present technologyoriented projects to local pre-university educators Emphasis on volunteer-teacher interaction as opposed to volunteer-student interaction Ideally: a sustained program involving several thousand schools every year
About the Process TISP activities success is built with subsequent impacts on teachers practices within classrooms, so motivated and engaged teachers should be present in such activities. Develop a partnership between local pre-university education community and school systems. Engage educational inspector convinced by the sustainability of TISP activities and teaching effectiveness partnership. Provide an interesting and non common space for regular training: Hotels Conference rooms University s theater
