Course Description: General-- Web page design and development using Adobe Dreamweaver 8. This class covers the basics of Web page development using HTML and Dreamweaver. You will develop Web pages and Web sites with text, links, graphics, and multimedia components. Credit Transfer: Students must check in advance with the particular college to which they plan to transfer credit. Prerequisites: Microcomputer Applications, basic computer literacy. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following competently: Demonstrate site management skills in developing a Web site Demonstrate knowledge of file formats used on the Internet Demonstrate the ability to create a Dreamweaver Web Page and Local Site incorporating the following: - Adding Web Pages, Links, and Images - Tables and Page Layout - Forms - Templates and Style Sheets 1 - Layers, Image Maps, and Navigation Bars - Page Layout with Frames - Animation and Behaviors - Media Objects Format a web page, accessible pages incorporating alternative visual media, style sheets, and logical structure. Insert and enhance graphics and drawing objects into a web page Create and customize hyperlinks Integrate documents into a web page

2 Evaluate the pages of other Web page authors for accessibility and design problems, as these problems relate to accessibility by persons with disabilities Test browser compatibility and publish to the World Wide Web Course Outline and Timetable: See attached schedule. Required Textbooks and Materials Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques by Shelly, Cashman, Wells & Freund. Published by Course Technology-Cengage Learning A flash drive (Preferably 256 MB or larger) Internet Access LSCO account A browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari Access to Dreamweaver 8 or Studio 8 software Course Structure The course will be taught using a combination of some lecturing, and a hands on approach in a supportive atmosphere where students are encouraged to ask questions and work with classmates. The heart of the course is built around the weekly lab assignments. Evaluation Methods Course Grade Approximate % of Grade Tests (3) 40% Lab/Homework and out-of-class assignments 20% Term Project (Personal Web Site) 15% Final Exam 25% 100% A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60 69% Tests- Three tests will be given. Most test material will be in the form of hands-on tasks but will also include objective (multiple choice, T/F, fill-in; matching etc.) questions from the text. Test material will draw from assignments, lectures and textbooks. All tests are comprehensive with emphasis on new material. Weekly Lab/Homework Assignments Homework assignments are due on the date assigned at the beginning of class. Late assignments are not accepted unless there are extenuating circumstances (job conflicts, illness or death in the family etc.) in which case it is up to the student to contact the instructor prior to the due date. If it is not worked out prior to the due date, late work is NOT accepted. If a student misses 3 or more homework assignments, they forfeit any and all curving, extra credit (if any) on all assignments, all tests or grade calculations. In other words if you fail to turn in 3 assignments and your final grade averages to a 69.9, you will get a D. Term Project The term project consists of an individual/personal web site created, designed, and built demonstrating certain skills learned throughout the course. The project must publish successfully and error-free. 2

3 Final Exam-The final exam will include a comprehensive performance test and will take the form of an advanced assignment. The results will be submitted electronically to the instructor. Attendance Attendance on a regular basis is not only required but is necessary for proper skill and knowledge development. If you miss any class, it will be entirely your responsibility to learn the material on your own time prior to next class time. A student who is absent for 4 classes (the equivalent of 2 weeks of the semester) forfeits any and all curving, extra credit on all assignments, all tests or grade calculations. Missing 6 classes will result in an automatic F. (Exclusionary cases such as being called for military duty or labor and delivery must be dealt with in advance). Unexcused tardies and early departures are recorded and 5 points are deducted from test scores after every 3 instances. See your instructor before or after (NOT DURING) class with excuses. Policy on a Grade Incomplete: The grade of I may be given when any requirement of the course, including the final examination, is not completed with prior instructor approval. Arrangements to complete deficiencies in a course must be made with the instructor. Incomplete work must be finished during the next long semester; if not, the Admissions and Records Office must change an I grade to the grade of F. The course must then be repeated, if credit is desired. An I grade also automatically becomes an F if the student re-registers for the course before removing the deficiencies and receiving a grade change. The instructor may record the grade of F for a student who is absent from the final examination and/or is not passing the course. Procedure for Review of Test Grades: If the student has an issue or questions about his/her test grade, the instructor must be contacted no later than three (3) days after receiving the grade. Exam Schedule: See attached calendar at the very end of syllabus. Policy on Make-ups and Retests: Make-ups are permitted for valid reasons only. To take a make-up, a written document from a physician, employer, police, jury announcement, coach etc. is required describing the situation and the date covered by the incident. All written excuses will be verified before make-up grades are recorded. A call to me, prior to the original test, alerting me to any situation that prevents you from testing is appropriate and expected. Any test that is approved for makeup must be made up within a week following the test. You are responsible for scheduling a suitable time for the make-up test with the instructor. Taking a makeup test means you are not eligible for extra credit questions, which may be on the original test. The make-up test may be different from the original test. 3

4 Withdrawals or Drops Never attending or ceasing to attend classes does NOT constitute a withdrawal or drop. You remain registered until you file Drop/Withdrawal Forms by appropriate deadlines. Failure to act in a timely manner will result in an F grade for the entire course. February 26, 2009 Last day to drop or withdraw without penalty (Grade of Quit or Withdrawal) April 14, 2009 Last day to drop or withdraw (Grade of Q, W, or F possible) Instructor-Initiated Drop: Instructors may drop students from classes due to excessive absences, disruptive behavior, dishonesty, violating policy, etc. Classroom Etiquette: - Cell phones and pagers should be set on vibrate or turned off. If you take a call during class, you must take it outside the classroom. During tests however all phones must be turned off. - Common courtesy and attention in class are expected of all my students. It is expected that you will not disrupt others. - Due to the nature of our computer classroom, absolutely no food, drinks or tobacco are permitted. Academic Honesty All student conduct will support academic honesty. Any student who cheats on a test will receive an F for the entire course. Submitting false or unverifiable documentation for make-up tests results in a 0 for that test. Sharing files is cheating. If two students share homework files, both students will receive a 0 for that assignment. Students subject to penalty due to academic dishonesty have the right to appeal to the department chair and eventually to the dean and/or academic vice president before imposition of the penalty. Violations of academic honesty may be referred to the Dean of Student Services for further action. SCANS Competencies: The Secretary s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) has researched and identified the skills and competencies that employees will need for workplace success. The following SCANS skills are incorporated into the course content as listed below: READING- Locate, understand, and interpret written information in prose and in documents such as manuals, graphs, and schedules. WRITING Communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and messages in writing, and create documents such as letters, directions, manuals, reports, graphs, and flow charts. ARITHMETIC/MATH Perform basic computations and approach practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques. SPEAKING/LISTENING Organize ideas and communicate orally; receive, attend to, interpret, and respond to verbal message and other cues. THINKING SKILLS Think creatively, make decisions, solve problems, visualize, know how to learn, and reason effectively. PERSONAL QUALITIES display responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, integrity, and honesty. BASIC USE OF COMPUTERS Acquire, organize, analyze and communicate information; enter, modify, retrieve, store, and verify data and other information; ensure accurate conversion of information into the correctly chosen format for display. WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES o Manage resources allocate time, money, material and facility resources, human resources o Work with information acquire and evaluate information, organize and maintain information, interpret and communicate information o Exhibit interpersonal skills participate as a member of a team, teach others, serve clients/customers, exercise leadership, negotiate to arrive at a decision, and/or work with cultural diversity o Apply systems knowledge understand systems, monitor and correct performance, and/or improve and design systems Utilize technology select technology, apply technology to task, and maintain and troubleshoot technology. o 4

5 Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a process involving higher order thinking skills. These skills include, but are not limited to, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of factual information. Lamar State College Orange Advances Critical Thinking Skills (LSC-O ACTS) through assignments of varying natures within the course that are designed to challenge and improve the student s critical thinking processes. Example In this course, IMED 1316, Web Page Design, students will be given case studies containing facts regarding various business and personal needs. Students will be challenged with creating or duplicating efficient and accurate web pages or web sites that will demonstrate the student s mastery of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of a particular concept in Web Page Design using Dreamweaver and Studio 8 Software. A well cultivated critical thinker 1 : Raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely; Gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; Comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards; Thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and Communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems. 1 Paul, Richard & Elder, Linda (2005). Academic Assistance/Resources If you experience difficulty in the course, schedule to meet with the instructor during office hours. Do not wait until the last minute. Sometimes, meetings and other assignments may keep the instructor away during normal office hours.
