Four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) The BA/BTch (Primary) is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and the Board of Studies, and Education Standards (BOSTES). Course Structure The BA/BTch (Primary) course is designed to successfully prepare Primary teachers. It consists of thirty-two credit point units (192 credits) studied over eight semesters full-time or the equivalent part-time. A full year of discipline only units (non-teacher education studies) is completed prior to the first scheduled professional teaching experience in compliance with GTIL 1.1. The course composition is set out below. Title of Course of Study Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of (Primary) Course structure: The course structure is based on eight semesters (each of 13 weeks in duration), with four units normally taught in each semester. The course is comprised of: 12 Education (including 5 Curriculum and Pedagogical Studies ) 20 Curriculum (This is shown below) Primary Students within the BA/BTch will normally complete their discipline units in the following way: 12 x Education units (including 5 Curriculum and Pedagogical Studies ) 12 x Curriculum Studies units to make up a major in Primary Curriculum specialisation 4 x to make up a minor in a KLA 4 x Core discipline units Within a BA/BTch at Avondale it is possible to do a 4 unit minor, an 8 unit major and /or a 12 unit specialisation. 1 P a g e

2 Primary KLA teaching areas include: English, Mathematics, Human Society & Its Environment, Creative Arts, Science & Technology, Health Physical Education and Biblical Studies Component Description These units cover a range of current educational topics designed to prepare Core Education and Pedagogical Studies pre-service teachers to successfully teach young people. These units involve a variety of topics including: Classroom Management; ICT and Learning; Relationships and Development; Students with Special Educational Needs and Multicultural & Indigenous Education. Curriculum Studies These units provide pre-service teachers with the opportunity to apply quality-teaching principles to specific teaching areas. Primary KLA Specialisation Students who complete the required units in the one discipline area complete a KLA specialisation. The major for the BA/BTch for students wishing to teach in Primary School Primary Curriculum Specialisation settings is a major in Primary Curriculum Studies. This major covers all mandatory key learning areas and prepares students for work in a primary setting. It consists of 12 units. The minor teaching field is comprised of 4 units within a chosen discipline area related to a key learning area of the primary curriculum. Minors may Primary Minor include English, Music, Creative Arts, HPE, HSIE, and Science. These are content units which are taught by the relevant disciplines and are designed to build a strong body of knowledge in one area of the Primary Curriculum. The degree not only qualifies and prepares graduates to competently teach from Kindergarten to Grades /7, but also to be responsible and ethical leaders to children who need positive role models. During the course, you will engage in five professional experience opportunities. These are undertaken at various primary schools to enable the application of theory in a practical setting. You may also be able to undertake an overseas practical experience. Where it could take you Successful completion of the BA/BTch (Primary) will allow you to graduate with the qualifications to teach from Kindergarten to Grades /7 and to gain employment in the following areas: Primary teacher Primary school administrator Primary school specialist teacher (Music, Creative Arts, HPE, Science, HSIE) Tutor. Graduates leave qualified to teach in church, independent and state school systems in both Australia and overseas. In addition to education-related careers, teachers often find careers in the corporate world where organisational and relationship skills are valued by employers. This program enhances the efforts of high potential students to influence professional practice through research, and facilitates access for students to proceed to research- based studies at masters or doctorate level. After completing the first two years of the BA/BTch (Primary) course students may gain entry into the honours program based on academic performance. 10 Entry Requirements DIRECT ENTRY ATAR of (or equivalent e.g. OP of 17 or less) ALTERNATE ENTRY If your ATAR is below 3.00 (or equivalent), you may still be able to gain entry into this degree on a conditional basis. For further information on alternative pathways into the course visit ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Overseas applicants will have their qualifications assessed by Avondale Admissions. Overseas applicants are also required to satisfy Australian Government visa requirements. Self-disclosure and Criminal Record Check Current legislation requires that all students who will be working with children or young people must take responsibility to make an online application for a NSW Working With Children Check Check/Volunteers-and-students and complete the Child Protection Awareness Training. All students enrolled in education degrees must complete the above and evidence of completion must be sent or given to the Professional Experience Placement Officer. This will cover all local school visits undertaken as part of education courses and school placements in New South Wales schools. All students who undertake placements in states other than NSW must also complete a separate Working with Children Check relevant to the state in which they are doing their placement. The placement officer will help with this process. Pre-service teachers must take a copy of the Working with Children Check form/card with them to their placement school. This applies to pre-service teachers doing Professional Experience placements in all Australian schools. 11 You can expect to spend approximately AUD$50 to $350 on textbooks, lecture notes and excursions per semester. Some textbooks are available to borrow from Avondale s library. Scholarships For a full list of Avondale scholarships and information on how to apply, visit Financial Assistance Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent humanitarian visa holder, you may be eligible for a CSP government subsidised tuition. Students who hold a CSP pay a student contribution amount for each unit of study at a lower fee rate than a full domestic tuition fee. For details visit FEE-HELP If you are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder, you may be eligible for FEE- HELP assistance. FEE- HELP is a Commonwealth loan scheme that allows eligible students to defer tuition fee payment and can cover all or part of a student s tuition fees up to a lifetime limit. For details visit State Registration Requirements for Teachers Endorsement of Avondale s Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of (Primary) and Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of (Primary)(Honours) by the New South Wales Government Institute of Teachers Advisory Panel qualifies graduates for employment as teachers in the NSW State public system. Other Australian state governments have different requirements for teachers to become registered to teach in state schools, but normally registration in one state is considered as meeting the requirements for other states.
