1 Tunstall Emergency Response has built a relationship with a large number of national and local organisations operating a Seniors Alert Scheme to enable people to feel secure and avail of assistance when required through the use of Telecare technology. Telecare equipment provides clients, carers and their families with the extra reassurance and support they need. In August 2008, following a tendering process, the Health services Executive (HSE) engaged a company called Tunstall Emergency Response in the application of Telecare systems in supporting older people at home. The study was undertaken in partnership with the HSE and the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The categories of clients included Single and Married people People with Disabilities People with specific health related needs People living in Rural and Urban settings. The equipment installed depended on the needs assessment which was carried out by the local Public Health Nurse or Occupational Therapist. The number of technology devices fitted in each case varied between 2 and 6. All homes had the pendant alarm button and a Lifeline Connect Unit installed. Of the case studies carried out 95% had the bogus caller capability fitted. Other common devices were smoke detectors (69%), fall detectors (52%), temperature sensors (21%) and carbon monoxide sensors (15%). Smaller numbers had equipment such as property exit sensors, bed occupancy sensor and flood detectors fitted. Case 1: One night Tom woke and thought the telephone was ringing. He got out of bed and with the aid of his walking aid made his way to the kitchen to answer the telephone. Before he got to the phone he lost his balance and fell. He pressed the monitored pendant alarm and the monitoring center came through directly on his home unit. They were able to talk with Tom and establish what had happened. The center then telephoned his family contact and within a few minutes they were with Tom. They lifted him up and put him back to bed. He thought that if he had not had his pendant he would have been unable to raise an alert and could have been there all night. This explains why we value just being able to press the button, talking to someone and getting the help I needed. I would not be without my monitored pendant alarm or my monitored fall detector it provides me with the peace of mind I need to stay at home. Case 2: Shelia likes the idea of having the technology in the house. She wouldn t part with it, definitely at night. There have been so many robberies due to the recession and she can be scared at night. Having a monitored pendant and a bogus caller button is so comforting. It s a great thing.

2 In the 36 -months of the study only 2 out of 108 people moved from their homes into care setting. Tunstall Emergency Response Company Overview Established in 1994 Tunstall Emergency Response Ltd is Irelands largest dedicated social monitoring alarm center. Tunstall Response has a unique system which means the operator will have all of your information to hand the moment you place a call. They will speak to you via the loudspeaker in the home unit and can hear you through the powerful microphone, helping them to understand the reason for the call and provide the most appropriate help. Even if they can't hear you or if you are unable to respond they will request help, whether it be a local key holder (e.g. neighbour), family member or the emergency services.
