Infosphere Traceability Server Query Performance Tuning Part 1: Tuning with WebSphere Application Server and Oracle Debarshi Raha Performance Engineer REVISION SUMMARY
To improve query performance, determine whether a bottleneck is present in the system and whether it can be removed by tuning the system. Performance tuning is an iterative process. It involves monitoring how different software components and hardware resources are performing under different workload and circumstances. Based on the results, configuration changes or tuning may be suggested. This article explains how IBM Tivoli Performance Viewer and Oracle SQL Trace can help you determine performance problems of any enterprise application that runs on WebSphere Application Server and that uses Oracle as the database server. This article describes the application of these tools on InfoSphere Traceability Server to determine query performance problems. It includes step-by-step detail of determining essential indexes that were created to improve query performance. In the experiment documented here, two multiprocessor servers (one for WebSphere Application Server and another for database server) were chosen with the following hardware and software configurations: H/W Processor Type #Cores #Logical Processors Processor Speed Memory WebSphere Application Server Intel(R) Xeon(TM) 4 8 (HyperThreading ON) 3.66GHz 8GB Oracle Server PowerPC_POWER5 64-bit 4 8 (SMT ON) 1499 MHz 7744 MB S/W Product Name OS Platform Infosphere IBM InfoSphere Traceability Server JP001 Traceability Server Application Server WebSphere Application Server Express Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 32bit Database Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release bit AIX Version bit To determine query performance problem, determine which component takes the most time for query execution. In my experiment, I turned off WebSphere Application Server security because I did not want security-related overhead, and I wanted to tune the base query first. Since there were 8 logical CPUs in both servers, I started 8 users to query InfoSphere Traceability Server in parallel and started monitoring different components. Tivoli Performance Viewer You can monitor different components of the application that runs on WebSphere Application Server using Tivoli Performance Monitoring Infrastructure. Here is the procedure on how to enable it and how to view InfoSphere Traceability Server Web services query-related statistics for WebSphere Application Server version 6.1. Enable Web Services Related Statistics: Log on to the WebSphere Application Server Administrative Console by pointing your Web browser to (if WebSphere Application Server security is disabled) or to (if WebSphere Application Server security is enabled) where hostname is the host name or IP address of the server for WebSphere Application Server. Click Monitoring and Tuning Performance Monitoring Infrastructure (PMI) <servername> Under Configuration tab, select All as 'Currently monitored statistic set' to enable Web services statistics. You can also use 'Custom' to enable Web services and other statistics. Click 'OK' and save changes. View Statistics: Log on to the WebSphere Application Server Administrative Console. Click Monitoring and Tuning Performance Viewer Current Activity <servername> On the navigation panel in the left side, select different options to monitor different components: Select Performance Modules Web services <service> to monitor Web services.
In this case, <service> is com.ibm.rfidic.webear.com.ibm.rfidic.web.war services services/ EPCglobalEPCISServicePort Select Performance Modules JDBC Connection Pools <jdbc resource> to monitor JDBC component. In this case, <jdbc resource> is RFIDIC Oracle JDBC Provider jdbc/rfidic/ifx Select Performance Modules JVM Runtime to monitor JVM heap usage Select additional modules as required. Using the Tivoli Performance Viewer, I found that JDBC takes the most time and QueryResponseTime JDBC time. Query: simpleeventquery(eventtype= ObjectEvent, EPC = :epc) returning 1 event Figure 1. QueryResponseTime jdbctime When I increased the number of users to query in parallel, then the JDBC wait time increased and the total query response time became jdbc+jdbcwaittime. Figure users in parallel. Query response time jdbc+jdbcwaittime
Here we can understand that WebSphere Application Server cannot cater to all 30 client requests simultaneously, since the Oracle datasource max connection pool size is set to default 10. To reduce the JDBC wait time, I increased the max connection pool size to 30. The following figure shows that there is no JDBC wait time after increasing the max connection pool size to 30, but the response time is still high. Figure 3. Decreased jdbc wait time, but still high response time Since query response time jdbc time, it is obvious that to improve query response time, jdbc time needs to be improved. Another observation that led me to the same conclusion is that the application server CPU was under utilized ( <5% ) when the database server CPU was over utilized ( >90% ). So, I shifted my focus to the database side to find CPU-intensive SQLs using Oracle sqltrace and tried to improve their performance. Oracle SQL Trace and TKPROF You can accurately measure the efficiency of the SQL statements that the application runs using the SQL Trace facility and the TKPROF tool. Enable timed statistics and sql trace for a particular session (recommended) or for the entire database using SQL*Plus. Enable them for the entire database using the following commands: SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET timed_statistics = true; SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET sql_trace = true SCOPE=MEMORY; After collecting statistics using sql trace for few minutes under desired workload, disable sql trace again using the following command: SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET sql_trace = false SCOPE=MEMORY; The trace files are saved under USER_DUMP_DEST directory. SQL> SHOW PARAMETERS USER_DUMP_DEST Format the trace files using TKPROF tool. The following command sorts the SQL statements in descending order of total CPU time spent, generates execution plans and produces the formatted output. $ORACLE_HOME/bin/tkprof <input_trace_file> <output_file> sys=no explain=user/passwd sort=(prscpu, EXECPU, FCHCPU, PRSELA, EXEELA, FCHELA) Note that execution plans generated by EXPLAIN PLAN may not match the real ones. I found that the following SQL is CPU-intensive:
SELECT /*+INDEX(e event_pk)*/ /*+NO_INDEX(e event_eventtime)*/ e.event_id FROM EVENTSCHEMA.EVENT e WHERE (e.type in (:1)) AND EVENT_ID in (select el.event_id from EVENTSCHEMA.EPCLIST el where (el.epc in (:2))) ORDER BY e.eventtime DESC, e.event_id ASC When I saw its execution path, I noticed that it performs a full table scan: Rows Row Source Operation SORT ORDER BY (cr=3908 pr=0 pw=0 time=45271 us) 1 NESTED LOOPS (cr=3908 pr=0 pw=0 time=45241 us) 1 SORT UNIQUE (cr=3905 pr=0 pw=0 time=45169 us) 1 TABLE ACCESS FULL EPCLIST (cr=3905 pr=0 pw=0 time=45089 us) < Huge time 1 TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID EVENT (cr=3 pr=0 pw=0 time=66 us) 1 INDEX UNIQUE SCAN SYS_C (cr=2 pr=0 pw=0 time=28 us)(object id ) It is obvious that we need to create an index on EVENTSCHEMA.EPCLIST(EPC). With the index created, query response time drops by 30%, and DB CPU utilization drops by 11%. Without index on EVENTSCHEMA.EPCLIST(EPC) Oracle CPU Utilization=90% With index on EVENTSCHEMA.EPCLIST(EPC) Oracle CPU Utilization=80% Table 1. Statistics before and after index creation In the same way, when I created the index on EVENTSCHEMA.EPCLIST(event_id), query response time and database CPU utilization dropped further: Oracle CPU Utilization=60% and WebSphere Application Server CPU Utilization=35%.
Figure 4. Query response time drops further with another index I found two more CPU-intensive SQLs where performance could be improved and created the indexes on ALT_ID (event_id) and on CHILDEPC (event_id). As a result, the database CPU utilization dropped by 80% and query response time dropped by 12% (Oracle CPU Utilization=10%, WAS CPU Utilization=55%). Figure 5. Query response time drops further with two more indexes In this experiment, creating a few indexes dropped database CPU utilization from 90% to 10% and dropped simple event query response time from 264ms to 117ms (for 8 users executing queries in parallel). For 4 users querying in parallel, the response time became only 57ms. You can find bottlenecks in query performance in a similar way, and then you can apply tuning. There are many other factors that can impact query performance, which are not described in this article. I'll cover other factors and tuning approaches in future articles.
